Free Vancouver concert okayed for Bryan AdamsThe Vancouver parks board has unanimouslyvoted to allow Bryan Adams, Extreme, SteveMiller, Sass Jordan, and Arc Angels to stagea free concert at Brockton Point in StanleyPark on Sept. 7.

Representatives from Friends of StanleyPark and local cricket and rugby organizationshad protested the concert, saying that it wouldcause severe damage to the park and securitywould be unable to keep gate-crashers fromswelling the crowd to 100,000. Bruce AllenTalent and MCA Concerts Canada plan onlimiting attendance to the Labour Day show to42,000 through the distribution of tickets. Theorganizers will also have to post a large security

deposit. But even with the affirmative vote, the

all -day concert has not yet been confirmedbecause approval is contingent on a suitableprofit sharing formula with the parks boardand the satisfactory conclusion to the ongoingplanning sessions with the City of VancouverFestival Committee and parks board staff.

CD shipments declinefor first time in JuneShipments of compact discs declined for thefirst time in June, according to figures releasedby the Canadian Recording IndustryAssociation (CRIA).

CD shipments were down one per centfrom June, 1991. Music videos were down 23per cent, cassette singles were down 53 percent and cassettes were down 19 per cent.Taken as a whole, shipments were down 11per cent and the net value of sales was downseven per cent from last June.

CRIA president Brian Robertson callsthe figures "not very encouraging," but heinsists it's too early to push the panic button.

"I think we'll just have to wait and see ifthis is a trend or not. It wouldn't be a veryhealthy year if this continues. But there's noindication that this is anything more than ablip. It's a volatile period and you've just gotto move forward very carefully."

For the year to date, total shipments havedropped slightly below 1991's total. Therehas been a one per cent decrease during thefirst half of this year compared with the sameperiod last year. The net value of sales is stillfour per cent ahead of last year.

Chip Esten brings Buddy to life for the last time

Oh Boy. Buddy, the musical, is back inToronto.

The touring show chronicling the briefbut prolific career of Buddy Holly, which hadits North American premiere at the RoyalAlexandra Theatre in the summer of 1990, hasreturned to the Royal Alex for its final stop.Chip Esten, who played the title role in Londonfor 10 months before joining the NorthAmerican tour, will play Buddy until the showcloses on Sept. 12.

Esten was a casual Buddy Holly fanwhen he played in a rock band and did a bit of

acting while going to college in his home stateof Virginia. But after graduating with aneconomics degree, he decided to move out toLos Angeles to try his luck as a full-time actor.

He was with an improvisational comedygroup called The Groundlings for less thantwo years when he heard about openings inBuddy. He passed two auditions in L.A. andwent to see a version of the show in SanFrancisco, he says in an interview held fourhours before his opening night in Toronto."When I saw the show I just knew that I had tohave it. It really blew me away."

Within three days of his final audition in

Lollapalooza '92 readyto roll into Molson ParkThe line-up has been announced for thesecondary stage at Lollapalooza '92 at MolsonPark in Barrie, Ont. on Aug. 5.

Taking the stage will be The Look People,Bronx Style Bob, Shark Bait, the Jim RoseCircus Sideshow and a production of JesusChrist Superstar featuring a host ofperformersfrom the Toronto independent music scene.

Other highlights of the sold -out event, apart from the seven headlining bands, include:an interactive percussion construction calledThe Rhythm Beast; using household appliancesaspercussion instruments on The Crush Cage;and The Safe Sex Wheel Of Fortune.

A vendor's market featuringapproximately 75 different merchants willalso be set up to sell everything from bags tobelts and books to body piercing. Numerousbooths housing social/political activist groupsand local art displays will also be on hand.

New York City, Esten was flown to London toplay Buddy. "A role of that type was somethingthat ! could only dream about," he recalls. Andhe still holds that reverence today as he sits inan empty rehearsal studio and talks about theshow.

"To star in a show about a rock and rolllegend like Buddy and to get to play that musicand use my rock and roll background, and toget to do the acting, has been a lot of fun."

While in London Esten married hiscollege sweetheart. He was also asked to opena royal variety show in front of QueenElizabeth. He proudly says the normally staidmonarch broke out into a broad grin as sheclapped enthusiastically after the performance.

After Esten joined the North Americantour, one of his stops was in Washington,D.C., where George and Barbara Bush cameout to see the show. They enjoyed it so muchthey invited the cast to play before the jointchiefs of staff in the White House rose garden.

"I think it shows that the music reallydoes cross many lines," Esten says of thetunes that inspired The Beatles and The RollingStones. "Even if you're a president or a queen,it still seems to have that magic."

Esten has now played Buddy for 16months and insists he has no trouble keepingthe show fresh. Because he's still a relativenewcomer to show business, he's yet to becomejaded and realizes the enormity of theopportunity he's been given. So while helooks forward to moving back to L.A. to learnnew roles when the show ends its run, it won'tbe that easy to leave all the memories andfriends he's gained during his apprenticeship.

"Even years from now if I'm going

MacNeil finally recordspopular concert closerVirgin recording artist Rita MacNeil hasapparently agreed to the recording of Bring ItOn Home To Me, the old Sam Cooke R&Bclassic which has been her long-time concertcloser.

MacNeil was reluctant to record the song, but changed her mind and recently completedthe session using an all-star lineup includingbluesman Buddy Guy (guitar), Skip Prokop(drums), Steve Webster (bass), Ian Thomas(guitar), and a guest appearance by Paul Shaffer(keyboards).

This track will be included on MacNeil'snew album, Thinking Of You, which isexpected to be in the stores by early September.Balmur's Max Hutchinson reports the firstsingle from the album will be Moment InTime, "a lush ballad in the style of Flying OnYour Own." Peter Mann looked after the vocalarrangement which on the talent ofLiberty Silver, Salome Bey, Jackie Richardson,Billy Newton -Davis, Barnes, Long JohnBaldry, Loraine Segato and John AllanCameron.

through a drawer and I pull out the Buddyglasses, I'll get real sentimental because thiswas my first big role. Itwas also a role that was

just perfect for me. And when you combinethose two, you just couldn't ask for more."

Esten, 26, feels it's appropriate for Buddyto end its North American run where it allbegan in Toronto. And he's excited thataudiences will be familiar with the show andcan add that crucial element of exci Cement andspontaneity to it from the start. He should alsoget to know the city pretty well because hisfellow Crickets (Bobby Prochaska as JoeMaudlin and Colin Gray as Jerry Allison) areboth Torontonians.

"They'vepromised they're going to showme a good time here and that the audiences aregreat," Esten says.

Well . . . Alright. Rave On.

Hey! Attic's flying high ... t Not only doesAttic have the Beach Boys, but it's the homeof the Buddy soundtrack, the original Londoncast. And, judging by the pandemonium andgood fun that was going on at Toronto's RoyalAlexandra Theatre, by the time the run iscomplete there'll be at least a million new andold fans looking for the album. I hear Attic'sselling upwards of 1,000 copies a week at thetheatre -- a rather conservative figure I'd say.But when you're business is up 46 per centoverall, why guild the lily? extravaganza. The show, the mix of audienceand the post-thea tre party was another p lus forDavid and Ed, and their publicity directorJohn Karastamatis. They looked after everydetail and whether you were a big timer froma daily, or a writer from a weekly, monthly orspecialized trade press, you got the feeling ofbeing wanted. Even radio programmers, on -air personalities, production people andtelevision personalities were treated withrespect. This wasn't a bought media crowd, itwas a party to celebrate a magnificent showand to get a chance to rub shoulders with anexceptionally warm cast and to meet old mediaand industry pals. It's no wonder this town hasthe respect it does for Ed and David Mirvish.(EC: So, who was there . . . ?)

Buddy revisited ... I was blown away bythe 1990 production of Buddy, but this timearound I was as exhausted as the cast, whichwas energized beyond belief. Like Chip"Buddy" Esten said when he closed the show,"Buddy's back . . . !" The Crickets: drummerColin Gray (Jerry Allison) from Ottawa; bassistBobby Prochaska (Joe B. Mauldin) fromToronto, and; of course, the Big Bopper (BrianRut), paced the show beautifully. This was anindustry -oriented audience and they pickedup on every little nuance and trick phrase, which made for a greater enjoyment of theshow. Rock 'n roll and one of its greatestlegends, Buddy Holly, is alive and well at theRoyal Alexandra, and this spectacularproduction runs through until Sept. 12. This islive theatre like you've never seen. Don'tmiss it! (EC: Now, that's an endorsement . . I)

Thank God for Cancon . . . ! Those areHMV's Paul Alofs words and he tells me thatat one of his stores, one in three CDs sold areeither by Barenaked Ladies or Blue Rodeo. The superstore sold 582 of the BarenakedLadies albums in one -and -half -days, and 1,030of the Blue Rodeo albums since its release, asof today (July 30). The Blue Rodeo album is#2 on HMV's Boston store chart and #3 on itsManhattan (New York) store chart. The albumis #3 on the RPM 100 Albums chart this week.(EC: Do we have a star system, or do we havea star system . . . add Tom Cochrane to thatU.S. action!!)

The greying of radio . . . ! In honour ofCHUM's 35th anniversary, a CHUM deejayfrom the past or present will appear in Buddyevery Tuesday night, and what a lineup: JayNelson, Bob McAdorey, Bob Laine, DuffRoman, Dan Michaels, Bob Magee and AndyK. (EC: Howcum they forgot Roger Ashby?)

Classic Rock ... anyone??? There are acouple of Toronto stations making movestowards the Classic Rock format. I have afeeling the winner will be an upper mid -townstation, not the one most are talking about.(EC: Is Toronto radio in trouble, or what . . ?)

A bleak time for radio ... ! Radio used tohave a big portion of the advertising pie, butit is shrinking with alarming speed. Printmedia is taking over, and the latest figuresshows that the junk mail is taking a big sliceout of the pie. Within the last couple of weeks,we had news of two stations closing in Sault

Ste. Marie: CFYN and CKCY. And, on July17, Ken Hannon, president of CHCL Medley, pulled the plug. One very reliable source tellsme there are more than a couple of majorstations hurting, and we just might be shockedover the next few weeks. (EC: Blame it onthose who took a trip without a map . . . !)

While we're on A&R ! Watch fora majorMAJOR to beef up its A&R activity by addinganother A&R department. I don't know if itwill be under the same roof. The company, allof a sudden, has more real estate. (EC: A fewasses have been saved, obviously!!!)

Judith Fitzgerald on country . . . ! Talkabout telling it like it is . .. the Toronto Star'sstar country columnist, knows where to aimher steel -tipped tootsies. She took off on theRawlco group in her July 19 column, lacingthem for not going on the air aspromised withtheir Toronto frequency of 92.5, and instead, making a bid for the 99.1 frequency. As Fitzpointed out, Rawlco has allowed 23 months togo by and she wants to know what's going to

happen to the $800,000 that was pledgedannually for Canadian country talent. Fitzalso points out that Rawlco had "pledged$10,000 in air time to each Toronto recordretailer promoting and prominently displayingCanadian country music (with a ceiling of$200,000 a year)." She also asks the question:"More importantly, will Rawlco honor itscommitment to play 32 per cent Cancon in itsfirst year, increasing by 2 per cent per year to40 per cent Cancon in its fifth year?" Hey! Hotstuff. (EC: Yeah! Hot! Hot stuff . . . !)

Hey! Cut the rumour in half . . . ! Thatrumour about a shakeup in the A&R departmentof a major MAJOR label, isn't half bad. Oneof the players, who apparently isn't that major,is taking a hike. (EC: The business goes roundand round . .

Market share for sale ... ? Is it possiblethat another major is being wooed to sell, orbecome part of? Now, who's left? It can't be... well, maybe. There's been a little holleringgoing on at the top. It seems the people whodon't know the business, but who bought inheavily, aren't too happy with what they'regetting. And, it's not just on the recording sideof things. Is there a money -heavy overseasbuyer ready to expand? And, guess what, thebuyer isn't from the land of the setting sun.(EC: How about sitting bull . . . ?)

Kevin Hilgers is back among the program livingKevin Hilgers, former morning personality atCJWW Saskatoon, is now "the morning guy"at CFGP Grand Prairie.

Hilgers' words of mo ming programmingwisdom have been missed, but he has a littleadvice for both seasoned and up-and-comingradio people, which follows:

After being blown out of CJWWSaskatoon, despite the best ratings the morningshow has ever had (big ratings bonus threeweeks prior to being fired, go figure), I'velearned a bit. Geesh it's tough finding a goodopening in the morning drive period.

Thank goodness I was in the habit of airchecking regularly. So a good tape to send outwas no problem. I sent out 125 tapes all overwestern Canada. I received a lot of nice letters.A lot o f "sound s great, but no openings so stayin touch!" About 40 per cent replied. I was inCalgary and a few places, but accepted aposition at CFGP Grande Prairie. It's a smallermarket, but part of Canada's greatest chain ofradio stations: Rogers. Hopefully, they cantake me places in a few years. We've discussedit, and with any luck Vancouver or Calgary

III III II 1 ;1-111Teen -driven CHR is declining

I am writing to respond to a letter written byCKDO Oshawa assistant music director BillWilson and subsequently published in RPM(June 27, 1992).

In an open letter to all Contemporary HitRadio (CHR) stations, Mr. Wilson attributedthe demise of CHR to the lack of varietyplayed. He also added that the format's currentwoes could be corrected by playing more"CHR gold," which he defined as hit musicpopular as early as the early -1980's.

While it is true that taking these measuresmay have a positive impact on ratings andlistenership in that a wider age group will betargeted (i.e. 12-34 instead of the current 12-24 target), it will not single-handedly endCHR' s problems.

Unfortunately, the problem is morecomplex and profound. The problem withplaying hit music these days is that the NorthAmerican teenaged -population is so smallthat selling a station primarily targeted to ayoung audience is difficult, if not virtuallyfutile, in some markets. Advertisers andsponsors feel that teenagers are no longerworth pursuing in advertising campaigns, notonly because of this small population but alsobecause of their relatively low income whencompared to an older listenership.

Recent BBM and Arbitron ratings inCanada and the United States respectivelyhave shown that adult -oriented formats suchas adult contemporary, news/talk, and countryare experiencing steady growth, while teen -driven CHR is declining.

In closing, in his letter, Mr. Wilson givessome worthwhile advice for the format buttends to oversimplify a very complex problemin Canadian radio today.Nanda L. LwinMississauga, Ont.

could be in the future. I have some advice topass on to others about losing a job.

Rightly or wrongly fired, you're fired. There's a good chance your stock value willgo down. You're a commodity. When tossedby a station, others notice.

It's a lot harder to find a job when you'reunemployed. If you're thinking of a move, doit now, before it's too late.

Someone said it before, but let's say itagain: If you have little or no respect for yourboss, get out of there. You'll either eventuallyquit, or be fired.

Have a contract. Thankfully I was givensome cash and a few months to tide me throughfour months of unemployment. Canada alsohas a fine unemployment insurance program. We were fortunate. It didn't waste away mysavings account. We didn't have to pile updebt. We're in good financial shape.

So think about it. Are you prepared tolose a pay cheque for one, two or six months?Could you survive without ringing up a fortunein bills?

Listen to your spouse. I'm fortunateenough to have a wonderful wife. Jan wasthere when I needed her. It was pretty rough, but she got me through it.

Take time to reflect. What can I do tomake sure this doesn't happen again? A changeis as good as a rest. And this may be the bestthing that has ever happened to you. Takeadvantage of that.

Tracey Prescott a natural toIt seems odd that a woman who has beenfamiliar to Canadian country music fans formore than two decades has just released herfirst solo album. But Tracey Prescott has, andit seems like she's destined for more long-term success.

Tracey was the youngest member ofCanada's first family of country music, TheFamily Brown, for 22 years before the grouppacked it in after the death of founding father,'Papa' Joe Brown. In 1990 Tracey decided totake some time off from the music business torelax. "We had taken The Family Brown as faras we could," she says. "We'd reached aplateau and couldn't go any further."

But after awhile on the sidelines, Traceyand her husband Randall -- a talented country

Mariah holds on. Mariah Carey's I'll BeThere holds the No. 1 spot on the Hit Trackschart for a fifth week despite some heavycompetition from the next three songs. I '11BeThere is still No. 1 on many stations across thecountry including: CFIX Chicoutimi, CKOIMontreal, CFOB Fort Francis, K-Lite Hamiltonand CHYM Kitchener.

A two -medium star! Faces Of Love fromNia Peeples jumps 35 spots to No. 61. Nia hasalso been the co -host of a late night danceshow. There have been quite a few artists tohave success in both music and television.Name the last artist who appeared as a regularin a TV series to have a No. 1 song.

Celine breaks into the Top 40. The latestrelease from Celine Dion's self -titled album isoff to a great start. Nothing Broken But MyHeart enters the chart at No. 37. It bodes wellfor Dion as her No. 1 hit If You Asked Me Todebuted at No. 53.

Canadians remain near the top ... BlueRodeo's Lost Together climbs to No. 3 on theAlbums chart. It could become the third albumfrom a Canadian artist to reach the top in lessthan a year (Bryan Adams and Tom Cochranewere the others). Several other Canadian artistsare also doing well. At A&A's ScarboroughTown Centre store, four Canadian albums areselling in the Top 10. The same scene isreported at Sam's store at Yonge & Eglintonin Toronto, Sam's Barrington store in Halifaxand HMV's St. Vital store in Winnipeg.

Secada busts out. Jon Secada' s Just AnotherDay hold at No. 2 on the Hit Tracks chart. Thatsong has propelled his self -titled album up 43places to No. 15. That's the biggest jump thisweek edging out the Mo' Money soundtrack, which climbs 27 spots to No. 17.

Maybe Geraldo will cut an album! Thelast person to have a No. 1 song and star in atelevision series is Michael Damian of Y&Rfame. His cover of Rock On hit the top in 1989.Several other artists have accomplished itincluding: Shaun Cassidy, Cher, Lorne Greene,The. Monkees and David Soul.

front Lonesome Daddyproducer and musician -- invited fellow familymember and musician, Barry Brown, to theirhome studio just outside Ottawa. They startedto write some new material and were soonsatisfied that it was time to share their newcollaborations with others.

Within 18 months of forming TraceyPrescott and Lonesome Daddy, they signed arecording contract with Sony Music Canada. Most of their self -titled debut album wasrecorded before they signed with Sony inMarch. On the album, which was released inJuly, the core trio enlisted the help of a skilledstable of musician friends, including drummerEddie Bayers, guitarist Steve Pitico, and fiddlerDon Reed.

With Randall producing the sessions fromtheir home studio, the album evolved in a veryrelaxing manner. And that casual acousticfeeling has translated well onto the new disc."We just picked the songs that we liked themost," says Randall.

"The only thing we really knew that wewanted to do was to key on Tracey as the vocalfocus of the unit," adds Barry.

But while the tone of the album isgenerally upbeat, some song lyrics ventureinto areas where many country artists havefeared to tread in the past. "There are a fewsongs that do make statements about thedifferent things that are happening around theworld and in our own part of the world here inCanada," says Barry.

Rhino's reissues helpfund current materialThe masterminds behind Rhino Records werein Toronto recently to promote their label andmeet with some Canadian music industrypeople.

Richard Foos and Harold Bronson firstpaired up in 1973 when Foos opened a recordstore in Los Angeles and got Bronson tomanage it. Soon after, they decided to startreleasing'records in addition to selling them. They started slowly with singles and thenreleased a number of novelty albums beforerealizing the untapped potential of reissuingold releases.

Rhino is now at the forefront of thereissue business, averaging 150 releases ayear and employing 100 people.

But Foos and Bronson aren't content torest on their laurels. They've also launched anew music division called RNA, which hasreleased albums from former Dream Syndicateleader Steve Wynn and Sgt. Pepper's parodists,Big Daddy.

Rhino is also getting involved withchildren's music with their Kid Rhino label.

The Rhino catalogue is being madeavailable here in phases through Warner MusicCanada. Among the eclectic group of artistswho now have older material available areDavid Bowie, Alex Chilton, Sparks, FrankZappa, Gary Glitter, Professor Longhair, TomWaits, Paul Anka and Slim Whitman.

number of tributes for farmers and theyappreciate how difficult it can be to earn aliving off the land. This concern shines throughon Down On The Farm, a song in whichTracey looks at the farming crisis from awoman's perspective.

Nobody's Home On The Range, aboutthe damming of the Oldman River in southernAlberta, is another song which has politicalovertones. Tracey says the Oldman projectcan also be linked to the plans to flood parts ofnorthern Quebec as part of the James Bay IIhydro -electric system. Randall produces nativeand Inuit artists for the CBC, so he knows theadversity facing native people in Canada'snorth.

"Those people do live off the land. Thosekids are eating raw caribou and char and stuff. It really is important to them what they eat. It'stheir lifestyle and they're out to protect it."

But the new album also has songs aboutmorepersonal relationships. The ballad WhenYou're Not Loving Me is the first single andwas up to No. 11 and rising on last week'sRPM 100 Country Tracks chart. Combine thatradio acceptance with the favourable reviewsthe album has been getting in the media, andTracey thinks the album could go gold byChristmas.

"Country is exploding. The potential isthere now," she says, before wistfully addingthat The Family Brown was never able tocrack the gold plateau.

Tracey Prescott and Lonesome Daddyare also looking to make inroads in the UnitedStates. Though the album has yet to be releasedthere, the group will be playing U.S. showcasesand Tracey hopes a distribution deal can beworked out within the next two months. Shesays Sony is putting a lot of effort intopromoting the group both here and abroad.

"They're very committed to takingCanadian talent worldwide, which is nice tosee."

The group has been making a lot ofpromotional appearances to stir up interest inthe album and will be playing a few gigs in theOttawa area and in the Maritimes in Augustand September. They will also be playing anumber of showcases at Country Music Weekin Calgary from Sept. 16-20.

BARENAKED LADIES - PopGordonSire/Reprise - CD 26956-PIt's finally here: the first full-length albumfrom the playful acoustic pop band whichmade history by selling more than 85,000copies of its Independently producedcassette EP. It's a tape that I've heard myfriends play so much In the last eight monthsthat I can almost recite every word to everysong. And rest assured that those samefour original songs have been remixed andare Included on Gordon. A lot of the othersongs on the album are probably just asInfectious, but 11 might take a few morelistenings before they sink in to myconsciousness and have the same effect. But there's certainly enough qualitysongwriting and playing that the bandshouldn't have any problems shaking the"novelty act" label which some have taggedthem with. Enid Is the catchy first releaseand there are a number of others with singlepotential, including New Kid (On The Block),which main songwriters Steven Page andEd Robertson co -wrote with Scott Dibble. The band was also assisted by a number ofother prominent Toronto musiciansIncluding Bobby Wiseman and members ofThe Rheostatics, Moxy Fruvous, theBourbon Tabernacle Choir, and theWaltons. Producer Michael Phillip-Wojewoda also contributes someInstrumentation. You should also note thealbum's typically irreverent liner notes. Itwill be interesting to see if this 15 -songcollection can keep the Barenakedphenomenon going. My hunch is that it will.

CLINT BLACK - CountryThe Hard WayRCA 66003-NThere aren't too many country artists whocan carry the "superstar" tag, but Clint Blackdoes it very well. He's also one of the fewwho concentrates on stage presentation. The state-of-the-art take -along stage set-up, and ten back-up musicians and singers, requires a road crew of 52 with six busesand five trucks. Not all the money Is spenton the road however. A great deal wasspent on this co -production with JamesStroud. This Is only Black's third album forRCA and It's perhaps his best in terms ofvocal prowess. Not that he's taking anychances, but his material is a bit looser.Much of It was written as a team withHayden Nicholas. We Tell Ourselves, takenas a single, is already a priority track forcountry programmers. Also key are TheGood Old Days and Buying Time. The waltzyA Woman Has Her Way, written by Black,Jerry Williams and David Bellamy, shouldalso attract programmer attention. Retailerslooking to attract country customers shouldfront -rack this item. Black is big with thewomen. WG

JACEK KOCHAN - JazzVisitorUnity UTY-126There are no gimmicks here. Kochan andfriends display a purist bent that is bothrefreshing and highly entertaining. Kochan, who was born In Poland and worked theEuropean and Asian jazz circuits, adds acosmopolitan flair to this package with hiswriting talent. He wrote all the material withthe exception of Barb's Bounce, which waswritten by Andrew Glover and Is a key track.Kochan on drums, hornmen Pat LaBarabera(tenor and soprano) and Jean-PierreZannella (alto and soprano) work freely andsmoothly with bassist Mike Downes andGeorge McFetridge on piano. Kochan alsoharnessed an additional four horns and avery effective cello (Paul Wldner) for theself produced session. The tracks wererecorded onto two -track digital tape atToronto's Jazz Partners Studios. Also keyare Village Idiot (with impressive horn workby LaBarbera), El Toro and Reve d'Hivier. But don't overlook the title track, whichperhaps gives more identity to Kochan'smodern acoustic approach to jazz than theother tracks. Available through UnityRecords in Toronto. - WG

THE OAK RIDGE BOYS - CountryThe Long HaulRCA - 66004-NThe competition Is pretty keen and someof the younger programmers are a littleuneasy with veteran bands. The Oaks, once on the priority list of most countryprogrammers, made a quick entry onto thecharts with Don Von Tress' penning of Fall, which has stalled and could disappearafter only a couple of weeks. This is apretty rude awakening for the Oaks, whoare among the best harmonizers in thebusiness. Because of their large fan base, they'll probably do not too bad. They mighteven get a longer chart life with the releaseof Fear Of The Flame, written by DougJohnson and Pat Bunch, and the GrahamLyle and Troy Seals penning of Until You'reBack In My Arms Again. - WG

SVP -JazzBlue MoodKC Music Group - KCD-1000-QAn Interesting package of contemporary

jazz stylings that shouldn't be overlooked. The trio: Michael Stuart (tenor, alto, sopranosaxophones, bass flute, clarinet), CollnaPhillips (vocals), and Jon Goldsmith (piano, synthesizers), took its name from the threemusical components that fashion its uniqueapproach to jazz: Saxophone, Voice, Piano(SVP). Their handle is just the beginninghowever. There is a cleverly energizedvocal and instrumental fusion that's difficultto describe but nevertheless, effectivelydelivered. All three players have anabundance of experience in their individualfields of songwriting and performing, whichcollectively adds to the entertainment valueof this Keef Whiting production. Phillipsand Goldsmith wrote much of the materialhere, key of which are The Little Waltz, ASad Affair and Time Enough. They alsoborrowed from some modern day mastersincluding Stevie Wonder's If It's Magic,Rogers and Hart's My Funny Valentine andthe Arlen and Marburg classic, SomewhereOver The Rainbow. Also very effectivelytracked is the traditional Cape BretonLullabye, which was arranged by Phillips.Available through Toronto -based K.C.Records, distributed by Attic. WG

SONIC YOUTH - RockDirtyDGC - DGCSD 24485-JThe album title says it all as dirt, in its manyforms, is a constant theme throughout. It'salso appropriate in that the Youth havebeen putting out dirty, heavy, grunge rockfor a decade and have been a key inspirationto similar bands coming out of Seattle in thepast few years. On Dirty the band borrowsa page from the best-known of those bands-- Nirvana -- by using their producer (ButchVig) and engineer (Andy Wallace). The firstsingle, 100 %, leads off the album and Is asdangerously menacing as rock and rollgets these days. Guitarist Thurston Moorealso takes lead vocal duties on Chapel Hill,Sugar Kane, and Youth Against Fascism.Ian MacKaye from Fugazi adds guitar onthe last track, which deals with disaffectedyoung people protesting for a morehumanitarian attitude from the confines ofthe White House. Swimsuit Issue and CrèmeBrOlee let bassist Kim Gordon show off hervocal skills. If it wasn't for the wailing, feedback -laden twin guitar attack of Mooreand Lee Ranaldo making their presenceknown on every song, you'd almost swearyou were listening to pop music at times. The Seattle kids may sell more than SonicYouth these days, but this is still one of themost Important albums released this year.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Daysin the Life of ...Chrysalis - F2 21929-FThe album's title refers to the amount oftime passed between the formation of thegroup and their signing with Chrysalis.

- Rap

Judging by the quality of much of thismaterial, it was time well spent. The firstsingle, Tennessee, has establishedArrested Development as a rap band with adifference. Whereas most rap has emergedfrom urban ghettoes, this group is happilybased In the countryside around Atlanta. And unlike a lot of other rap acts, theyrebuke shoot -em -up gangster posturing and"pimp/ho" sexism and promote respect, family values and "male responsibility." Ontop of that, the music's good too. Mama'sAlways On Stage, Mr. Wendal, U, andNatural are all groovin' tracks with dancefloor potential. People Everyday takes lyricsfrom Sly and the Family Stone's EverydayPeople and riffs from UB40's Cherry Babyto produce a funky dancehall reggaenumber. This is a refreshing album from agroup we should be hearing a lot moreabout In the future. SM

KIM DOOLITTLE - Country/BluesBetter Off BlueCottage Records - COT -100This album should bring a wider audienceto Doolittle, who has a unique country -blues approach that demands attention.Better Off Blue, written by CarmenWestphall, one of the best country -blueswriters In the business, Is the commandingtrack here. Unfortunately, Westphall hasrelegated herself to the sidelines of countrymusic. Doolittle doesn't too bad on her ownas a writer, which makes Shotgun and TriedAnd True key tracks. Doolittle also teamswith manager Gerry Knight for a couple ofinteresting tracks, Love Was A Good Thingand Love Breakdown. The title track hasbeen taken as a single, and should catchfire if given a promotion push. This Halifaxnative has a lot to offer with a vocal punchand delivery that's somewhat refreshingfrom the usual run -of -the mill Nashvillewannabes. WG

CHRIS LEDOUX - CountryWhatcha Gonna Do With A CowboyLiberty - C2 -98818-FWith a little help f rom Garth Brooks, not thathe needs it, LeDoux moves onto the chartswith ease as the title track, taken as the firstsingle, hits home with country prog rammers. It doesn't hurt that Brooks co -wrote thissong with Mark Sanders, and that AllenReynolds and Jerry Crutchfield produced. The rest of the album, produced byCrutchfield and Bowen, contains a lot ofvocal and writing highs. LeDoux Is a worki ngcowboy and his vocals show it. They aren'tpretty, they're just a vehicle for the deliveryof his message, which ain't bad, andpunched home best with Call Of The Wildand Hooked On An 8 Second Ride. Also keyis the Ed Bruce penning of You Just Can'tSee Him From The Road, a powerfulmessage. Cadillac Ranch, written by ChrisWaters and Chuck Jones, could raise asmile from farmers faced with foreclosure.LeDoux has that rugged cowboy look, nicelydisplayed on the front cover, that shouldattract buyers. He's going to be here forawhile. - WG
