1 WEEKLY TECHNICAL LECTURE PROGRAMME AT HRS Prologue The “Weekly Technical Lecture” Forum was initiated with a vision to empower the employees of the Department through Knowledge and to augment the inhouse capacity in terms of intellectual resource. Highways Research Station has been conducting this Weekly Technical Lecture Program every Tuesday Evening with great sanctity. Prologue

The “Weekly Technical Lecture” Forum was initiated with a vision to empower

the employees of the Department through Knowledge and to augment the inhouse

capacity in terms of intellectual resource.

Highways Research Station has been conducting this Weekly Technical Lecture

Program every Tuesday Evening with great sanctity. The vibrant & interactive forum

covers a wide range of topics apart from the core Highway Engineering.

Not only from HRS, are the employees from the other wings of the Highways

Department are also benefitted by attending these lectures of varied topics.

Guest Lecturers

The Guest lecturers are resourceful experts in their own domain who deliver

lecture and enlighten the audience with useful information. The Guest lecturers have

been benevolent in sharing good information in their relevant fields with the listeners.

Most of the guest lecturers had delivered spell-bound lectures. Exchange of

information had been noticed in almost all the lectures.

Summary

Highways Research Station, has been successful in organising upto 199 Week’s

lecture programmes, as of now, has met the milestone 200. More than the successive

week’s programmes that have made upto this number strength, it is the variety of

topics and speakers which has made the floor special.

The 180th lecture titled

“ ”carried tips for

wellness and health in a natural way and

was an eye-opener to Naturopathy. The

principle of Naturopathy, “in stead of

treating the body’s reaction to any

foreign bodies allowing the body to

react in a natural way is the best thing”

was emphasized. The session was lively

and turned to be a much-sought after

lecture session in terms of content.

required tool for an institution like this.

Lengthy reports can be free from errors

The use of software to inculcate

better reporting style was emphasized

during the lecture.

Dr.J.S.Gunavathy delivered a very

important lecture on “Emotional

Intelligence” with all its models from

interpersonal to intrapersonal intelligence,

measurements in different types of

models, how to use one’s emotions to

achieve one’s goals or the organization’s

goals, etc,. EI helps an indiviual at

various situations, if utilized appropriately

to achieve organization’s goals.

The highly interactive session was

very well received by the audience.

“Change Management” a subject that

is essential for the changing scenario and

is to be acquired by all the individuals to

survive and excel in any changing

environment of an organizational

structure or a system. Dr.K.Prabhakar

took the audience and the session very

lively at the same time driving hard the

essentials of Change Management into the

minds of the audience. This Awareness

oriented lecture was aptly timed, as the

Department is poised for huge growth

potential, with many changes.

185th weekly lecture titled “Road

safety” was delivered by our Department

Deputy Superintending Engineer,

Er.G.Manuneethi explained the need for

road safety and the responsibility of the

same lies with the drivers.

Drawing the lively examples from many

practical situations, the Guest Speaker

highlighted the need for Safety habits

early in of.

The vivid presentation & subsequent

interaction, drew the support from all

concerned.

“Identification of Landslide prone areas

using Remote Sensing and GIS” dealt

with the introduction of Remote sensing

technology & its advantages in

identifying the landslide prone areas. The

lecture also enlightened the audience

about the different type of sensors and

briefed especially about SONAR,

RADAR & LIDAR, data transmission,

data reception and processing, different

mapping systems.

The case- studies presented was

informative.

Mr.S.Anand Vijay Karthick, Regional Manager, 3M India Limited delivered

his lecture on "New Technologies in Road Safety”

On his lecture, he dealt about the traffic management solutions to ensure safe

and efficient movement of all road users and vehicles. And also discussed high-

performance retro-reflective signages and pavement marking solutions for improved

traffic management as well as enhanced motorist, pedestrian and occupational safety.

The enhancement of safety through Road furnitures was well narrated through the

presentation.

lecture provided greater insight on the

Geosynthetics. The topic was dealt in

detail including all aspects so that even a

beginner could also develop interest.

The adept and confident handling of the

subject, proved the strong academics in

the Guest.

The 190th lecture in series was on

same was delivered by a competent guest

The Codal provisions of TN

Budget Manual, TN Financial Code, TN

Treasury Code, TN Accounts Code was

described in detail.

The lecture was well attended by

the Engineers & staff from all the wings

of the department, who were eager and

anxious with many queries & doubts.

The lecture won everybody’s

appreciation.

Head RCI Digital Solutions PVT.Ltd., Chennai. on 28.02.2017

191st Weekly Technical Lecture on “Digital H D” was delivered by

Mr.R.Sundararajan, Director & Mrs.Jyothir Latha which encompassed all the details

related to digitizing an organization.

The Presentation listed out the concepts and Software architecture for specific

Technical issues.

The discussions during the presentation dealt with the spotting the black spots of

accidents, Analysis of data using spatial tool, the G.I.S.

While some of the applications were in vogue in the Department and HRS being

a knowledge centre, yet the comprehensive manner in which the topic was

disseminated, deserves appreciation.

This was as special programme

conducted by the Training Wing on the

evening of International Women’s Day,

which fell on 8th March 2017.

The fitting commemoration of Women

hood, was in the form of lecture on a

Women- Centric topic in preserving health

& better lining style of Working women,

especially.

The All Women programme was well

handled by the Cheif Guest Dr.C.Sumathi,

MD, DGO, Professor of Obstetrics and

Gynaecology., Govt. Stanley Medical

College.

The large contingent of women Engineers

& Staff of the Department, enjoyed the

session & it is a thought to cherish.

was also dealt in detail.

smashing age-old myth about gender, gender- bias, won the hearts of the gathering.

a videography which was interesting.

The detailed lecture was delivered with

information such as need, pre-

construction planning, simplification of

construction procedures, different

systems available in the superstructure

system.

session.

The principles, world-wide scenario, National & Regional states on GPS

Technology were vividly presented.

The application of the satellite- based GPS Technology for sophisticated,

precise & accurate Engineering solution was aptly described.

The Demonstration session that followed the lecture, at HRS campus, enthralled

the audience who had quick Hands- On.

This session has invited the need for such sessions amongst larger group of

Engineers of the Department in future.

employees of an organization about the

Gender based issues and the rules and

regulations available for the same.

pertaining were all dealt in detail.

held the audience captive by her

impressive speech emphasized the art of

effective Interpersonal Communication.

Feed-back & Evaluation:

Feedback is an essential part of any Training programme through which alone

can the training programme be improvized. The feedback forms are prepared with an

idea of evaluating the programme so as to add more quality to the training. It is a form

reassuring the quality of the programmes.

Feed-back is a must for any programme on training. The strength and weakness

of the training programme conducted could be ascertained only based on the unbiased

opinion about the programme, by the participants. Apart from such information, the

feed-back offers a wide scope for improving further. With this sole aim and

perspective, responses are collected from all the participants of the Weekly lecture

programme at the end of the lecture sessions.

The responses are analyzed and status of the delivery system is ascertained at

any point of time. Every effort is taken to provide better quality programmes to the

audience. Thorough interactions on the floor, furtherance of the topic in the form of an

action are all pointers to the success of the Weekly Lecture programme. In such a

count, the feed-back sheets are preserved for further reference and action.
