Principal Views SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS
It is that time of year where we turn our attention
to our 2019 School Council election process. We
have three current parent vacancies. EVPS would
like to firstly thank Fiona Micelotta, Trisha Bennett
and Daniela Altandzieva for their contribution over the past two years.
With those three vacant positions we are seeking
parents to nominate for school council with
nomination forms to be collected at the office and
completed by Friday 22 February.
Should we receive more than three nominations we
will hold a vote to elect the school council
representatives.
ITEMS OF VALUE
Please note that the Education Department and the
school do not have insurance for personal items
and ambulance or medical insurance coverage for students. We cannot be held responsible for
student mobile phones and electronic games that
are brought to school and parents are encouraged
to purchase this insurance themselves.
STUDENTS TAKING HOLIDAYS DURING TERM
TIME
We understand that not everyone is able to take
holidays during term breaks however there is a
growing number of families who take a
considerable number of schools day off due to
family holidays. The school is funded by the
number of students in attendance in February
which means that if your child is away for a
part of February then the school receives absolutely no funding from the government for that
child for the year. Schools have to pay for all of our
staffing, maintenance costs, purchases, energy,
phones etc so it is important to maximise our grant
money.
Pauline Kubat - Principal
PAYMENTS
To assist with waiting times in the office it is
strongly recommended that parents pay for books,
excursions etc on line either through compass for
excursions, incursions and camps and on QkR for
lunch orders, uniforms, book packs, netbooks. If you do need to hand in forms, or pay by cash in a
lopee you can send these with your child to the
classroom and they will be sent to the office in the
class satchels.
UNIFORMS
Every student at EVPS is
expected to wear the correct
EVPS uniform items. This
includes plain black pants,
shorts and skorts which means that pants with
logos and stripes etc are not a part of our official
uniform. Plain black items can be purchased from
the department stores at Epping Plaza and Plenty
Valley as well as from the PSW uniform shop in Danaher Drive in Sth Morang. Our school dress is
the black, white and green check not the generic
green and white check that you buy from
department stores. All logoed items can be
purchased from the school uniform shop either on
QkR (every day) or via child’s lopee in the class
satchel or over the counter on Monday, Wednesday
and Fridays only.
Please check the name on your children’s
uniform items to ensure that they have brought the
correct one home. If your child has taken another
child’s uniform in error, please return it to the
school as soon as possible. Thank you
STAFF COMMENCING FAMILY LEAVE.
Alannah Nettleton and Stephanie Micovski
finish up this week as they commence their
maternity leave. We wish them all the best
as they prepare for the arrival of their first
babies.
PLEASE REMEMBER we are an ‘egg & nut free’ school: no eggs,
peanut butter, nuts or nutella spread to come to school at any
time. Please assist us to keep our students safe. Thank you.
Keep your hands and feet to yourself. Everyday Counts!

EVPS Uniform Price Increase
Due to manufacturer increases the cost of some of our uniform items will
increase slightly from the 1st February 2019.
An updated price list will be available shortly.
At the last School Council Meeting a motion was passed to make
the EVPS School Bag a compulsory item for Years P-4, com-
mencing with Prep in 2019.
Welcome back to the new school year, it will be an exciting time for many
this year.
This year on School Council we are looking at ways for fundraising to get a School Gymnasium built, unfortunately, they are not cheap and any fund-raising ideas you may have will be greatly appreciated, please pass them
onto our School Fundraising Committee via the office.
Lobbying the local government ministers for our area, they may be able to
help us out in this area.
We will be adding more solar panels to the roof of the school, to further cut
our carbon footprint and to help us save on electricity costs.
Elections are coming up for School Council in the coming weeks, anyone interested in running for a 2-year term is encouraged to apply, it is a really valuable experience as a parent and provides some invaluable insight into how a school runs and how the decisions directly impact on the learning of
our students.
This year is a School Review year, where we look at where we have been over the last 4 years, and where we want to go as a school in the next four
years.
Please feel free to contact me by email should you wish to share ideas and
thoughts on fundraising for our much needed gymnasium.

EVERY DAY COUNTS PRIMARY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day – missing school puts them behind.
SCHOOL IS BETTER WHEN YOUR CHILD IS THERE
Why it’s important
We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day.
If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school.
There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.
Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.
Getting in early
Attendance patterns are established early – a child regularly missing days in kindergarten or in the early years of school will often continue to miss classes in the later years, and receive lower test scores than their classmates.
It’s vital that students go to school every day – even in the early years of primary school.
IN VICTORIA SCHOOL IS COMPULSORY FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEO-PLE AGED 6 -17 YEARS
Student Absences
The main reasons for absence are:
Sickness – There are always times when students need to miss school, such as when they’re ill. It’s vital that they’re only away on the days they are genuinely sick, and developing good sleep patterns, eating well and exercising regularly can make a big difference.
Family holidays - It's vital that holidays are planned during school holidays where possible, and not during the term. If you are planning to go on holiday during term time, make sure that you talk to your child’s school in advance, and work with them to develop an absence learning plan.
“Day off” – Think twice before letting your child have a “day off” as they could fall behind their classmates – every day counts.
Truancy – This is when students choose not to go to school without their parent’s permission. There can be many reasons for truancy. The best way to address this is for schools and parents to work together.

School refusal - School refusing children will experience significant emotional distress not only when going to school but also at the thought of going to school; they may be absent from school for weeks or even months at a time. School refusal differs from truancy as children generally stay home with the knowledge of the parents and despite their best efforts to encourage their child to go to school. See: My child or teenager has anxiety
BEING AWAY FROM SCHOOL FOR ONE DAY A FORTNIGHT EQUALS MISSING 1.5 YEARS OVER 13 YEARS OF SCHOOL
If your child is away
If for any reason your child must miss school, there are things you can do with your school to ensure they don’t fall behind:
Inform the school
Speak with your child’s classroom teacher and find out what work they need to do to keep up.
Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child completes the plan.
Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as early as possible.
Openly communicating with your child's school about all absences is a good way to prevent attendance issues being escalated to a School Attendance Officer. A School Attendance Officer is a Department of Education and Training Regional Director who has authority to follow up attendance issues. Chronic or ongoing attendance issues that are escalated can lead to an Infringement Notice being issued to parent/s.
If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know so we can work together to get your child to school every day.
Top attendance tips for parents
Schools want to work in partnership with parents – act early if you have any concerns by contacting your child’s school and asking for advice and support
Remember that every day counts
There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes and their social connectedness
Talk positively about school and the importance of attending every day
Open and prompt communication with your child’s school about all absences is a good idea
Avoid making routine medical and dental appointments during the school day or planning family holidays during the term
Seek help from your school if you are concerned about your child’s attendance and wellbeing. Schools want to work in partnership with parents to support student attendance and wellbeing.

Provide written guidance on appropriate conduct and behaviour towards children.
Engage only the most suitable people to work with children and have high quality staff and volunteer supervision and professional development.
Ensure children know who to talk with if they are worried or are feeling unsafe, and that they are comfortable and encouraged to raise issues.
Report suspected abuse, neglect or mistreatment promptly to Leadership/Welfare Team and/or the appropriate authorities;
Share information appropriately and lawfully with other organisations where the safety and wellbeing of children is at risk and
Value the input of and communicate with families and carers.
IMPLEMENTATION:
Our Staff and volunteers must agree to abide by our Safety Code of Conduct which specifies the standards of conduct required when working with children.
Training and supervision:
Training and education is important to ensure that everyone at Epping Views Primary School understands that children’s safety is everyone’s responsibility. Our culture aims for all staff, students and wider members of our community to feel confident and comfortable in discussing any allegations of child abuse or child safety concerns. We train our staff to identify, assess, and minimise risks of child abuse and to detect potential signs of child abuse.
We support our staff through ongoing professional development to develop their skills to protect children from abuse and promote the cultural safety of Aboriginal children, the cultural safety of children from linguistically and/or diverse backgrounds, and the safety of children with a disability.
We ensure all staff and volunteers understand Epping View’s commitment to child safety and that everyone has a role to play in protecting children from abuse, as well as checking that their behaviour towards children is safe and appropriate.
*Please refer to our Child Safety Code of Conduct
Any inappropriate behaviour will be reported through appropriate channels, including the Department of Health and Human Services and Victoria Police, depending on the severity and urgency of the matter.
Recruitment:
We take all reasonable steps to employ skilled people to work with our children. We develop selection criteria and advertisements which clearly demonstrate our commitment to child safety and an awareness of our social and legislative responsibilities. Epping Views Primary School understands that when recruiting staff and volunteers we have ethical as well as legislative obligations.
We encourage applications from Aboriginal peoples, people from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds and people with a disability.
All people engaged by Epping Views Primary School, including volunteers and trades people, are required to hold a Working with Children Check and to provide evidence of this Check.
We carry out reference checks to ensure that we are recruiting the right people.
Fair procedures for personnel:
The safety and wellbeing of children is our primary concern. We are also fair and just to personnel. The decisions we make when recruiting, assessing incidents, and undertaking disciplinary action will always be thorough, transparent and based on evidence.

Privacy:
All personal information considered or recorded will respect the privacy of the individuals involved, whether they be staff, volunteers, parents or children, unless there is a risk to someone’s safety. We have safeguards and practices in place to ensure any personal information is protected. Everyone is entitled to know how this information is recorded, what will be done with it, and who will have access to it.
Legislative responsibilities:
Epping Views Primary School takes our legal responsibilities seriously, including:
• Failure to disclose: Reporting child sexual abuse is a community-wide responsibility. All adults in Victoria who have a reasonable belief that an adult has committed a sexual offence against a child under 16 have an obligation to report that information to the police.
• Failure to protect: People of authority at Epping Views Primary School will commit an offence if they know of a substantial risk of child sexual abuse and have the power or responsibility to reduce or remove the risk, but negligently fail to do so.
• Any personnel who are Mandatory Reporters must comply with their duties.
Risk management:
In Victoria, organisations are required to protect children when a risk is identified. In addition to general occupational health and safety risks, we proactively manage risks of abuse to our children. We have risk management strategies in place to identify, assess and take steps to minimise child abuse risks, which include risks posed by physical environments (for example, any doors that can lock) and online environments.
Allegations, concerns and complaints:
Epping Views Primary School takes all allegations seriously and has practices in place to investigate thoroughly and quickly. Our staff are trained to deal appropriately with allegations.
We work to ensure all children, families, staff and volunteers know what to do and who to tell if they observe abuse or are a victim, and if they notice inappropriate behaviour.
We all have a responsibility to report an allegation of abuse if we have a reasonable belief that an incident took place.
If an adult has a reasonable belief that an incident has occurred, then they must report the incident. Factors contributing to reasonable belief may be:
• a child states they or someone they know has been abused (noting that sometimes the child may in fact be referring to themselves)
• behaviour consistent with that of an abuse victim is observed
• someone else has raised a suspicion of abuse but is unwilling to report it
• observing suspicious behaviour.
EVALUATION:
This policy will be reviewed every four years and following significant incidents if they occur. We will ensure that families and children have the opportunity to contribute to the policy guidelines. Where possible we do our best to work with local Aboriginal communities, culturally and/or linguistically diverse communities and people with a disability in gaining guidance/ feedback and advice.
