Feature Film: Frank vs God
David Frank thinks he's lost everything. Unable to move past the grief of losing his wife, this former lawyer has all but given up. That is, until a tornado not only de-stroys his house, but takes from him the last real connection to the world, his be-loved dog Brutus. When the insurance company deems the loss an "act of God," David decides that someone has to pay. He decides to serve God . . . with a law-suit. Shorts: Heartbreak and Beauty, Not a Stranger and Welcome to Willowsbrook
Bring a snack to share, and a friend!
The Week In Review
Thanksgiving Sunday we had an intergenerational service, so that families could worship together on this
festive day.
After the first reading, Matthew 6:25-33, Pr. Loretta spoke to the children about what chickadees can teach
us (that we need to share with each other instead of being greedy). Each child received a quantity of Nyjer
seed so that they could try luring a chickadee to sit on their hands. Ezekiel 34:25-31 introduced the second
learning segment, on being showered with blessings. Her focus here was on the freedom we can give each
other by following the Golden Rule (to treat each other as we would want to be treated - a blessing given
by God to all peoples). Last, the reading from 1 Thessalonians 1:2-5a was the lead-in to Pastor Loretta’s
talk on “I Am Thankful for You”. She talked about her absence on Good Food Box day and how folks had
volunteered to do various aspects of the Good Food Box procedure in her absence. She mentioned that she
was making a special donation in thanks to God for this blessing; she also encouraged us to make special
“gratitude” offerings for blessings we receive in our lives.
Our worship was enhanced by special music by Bill Renwick on the organ and John H on trumpet.

Refugee Concert & Silent Auction
We expect that everyone at Grace has some way that they can be involved in the Refugee Concert & Silent
Auction, and we want to be able to get the word out to everyone about what ways you can be involved and
why you will want to be involved. So, we are planning a special ‘Refugee Concert & Silent Auction’ edition
of the newsletter. There will be information about the refugee family and how it comes about that they are
coming to Hamilton, and details about the concert & silent auction event. Look for this to arrive in your
mailbox in a couple of weeks.
Treaties Recognition Week
With the passing of the Treaties Recognition Week Act on May 30 this year, Ontario has designated the
first full week of November as Treaties Recognition Week (November 7-13). The Province is seeking to
highlight the importance of treaties and to raise awareness of the treaty relationships which exist between
indigenous and non-indigenous people in Ontario. In observance of the inaugural week, a joint Anglican/
Lutheran working group is hosting a Blanket Exercise on Wednesday November 9 at 7pm at St. Mark’s An-
glican Church Brantford and an afternoon of presentations, discussion and worship on Sunday November
13 beginning at 2pm at the Woodland Cultural Centre Brantford and concluding at Her Majesty’s Royal
Chapel of the Mohawk. There is no charge for any of the activities; donations are always welcome! Spaces
are limited. Please register with Anne or Kathy at [email protected] or 519-752-6451.
You can start thinking now about whether you are interested in going; the poster will appear in next
week’s newsletter.

Good Food Box News
October’s Good Food Box day was extra busy, with several of the usual volunteers, including Pastor Loret-
ta, being away that day; the great news was that other volunteers stepped up to the plate and got the job
done! Thanks to Andrew, Zel, Ray, and Lynne & Rick for setting up the tables, boxes & bags in the Hall the
night before, to Marilyn (Ruth’s cousin) for helping to fold & bag the Good Food newsletters and Foodland
Ontario recipe booklets, to John & Ryan for delivering boxes, and to Melody, Lynne and Diane for supple-
menting Lois & Gerd being at the ‘reception desk’. Special thanks to Jim S, who directed the sorting &
packing operations in Judi’s absence. Everyone’s extra help was greatly appreciated! And regular volun-
teers - your help is appreciated every month!!
Even better news: because some produce was left over when sorting/bagging were finished, we were able
to offer extra produce to one of our long-term customers who has a need for financial assistance, and she
was most appreciative of the extra peppers, green beans and tomatoes. And we had several boxes that
were not picked up, so we were able to give them to the pre-school for aboriginal children (the children
had grown the tobacco that was given to Chief Hill when she gave a talk here the week before). It’s won-
derful to see how the food boxes have helped us to develop more connections in the community!
More Ways to Give
We are all looking for ways to make our lives more convenient - and Grace Church is going to help you
with that . . . by giving you more ways to give.
1. Canada Helps. There are several ways to do this, but the easiest is to go to our website (glc.ca). Click
on the ‘Donate Now” button, then follow the instructions to make a donation using your credit card.
(Idea: if you wanted to make a special Thanksgiving donation but didn’t have extra cash handy on Sun-
day, you could try out donating online some time during this week - no more having to remember un-
til next Sunday!).
2. Square. Coming soon. A point of sale device that allows you to make a credit card transaction. It will be
available for use the night of the Refugee Concert & Silent Auction (so you won’t have to bring a wad of
cash to pay for the items you successfully bid on - how convenient is that?!).
MacNeill Baptist Church
Sunday, October 23rd this year is the eighty seventh anniversary of Westdale/MacNeill Baptist Church, and
we are happy to announce that our preacher for that date is a person with strong ties to the Westdale
community. The Hon. Rev. Dr. Lois M. Wilson will be that speaker. Dr. Wilson, in partnership with her
husband, Roy, was minister at First United Church, Hamilton, and has also served a number of congrega-
tions in Canada. She has also served as the President of the World Council of Churches, on the Board of
Amnesty International, and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. She has traveled extensively through-
out the world meeting with Church leaders and their congregants in a number of countries where the pro-
phetic voice of our faith was being forced into silence.
Dr. Wilson has also served as a Senator in Canada’s “house of sober second thought”. She is the author of
seven books, including her memoir, Turning the World Upside Down[1989], and most recently her delight-
ful collection of anecdotes of the Christians she has throughout her life’s journey, entitled I Want to be in
That umber: Cool Saints I have Known [2014]. Incidentally, she is one of the coolest!
Following the service a simple lunch will be served.
Please let Pastor Loretta know if you
want to attend the event by leaving a
message at 905-527-0877 or
[email protected] . . . and
definitely let her know if you will be
needing a ride!
If you don’t like going out at night, do
consider going to this event at ‘Central’.
Pastor Loretta will be attending and
offering one of the prayers.
