Malerweg trail 2nd stage - Wehlen-Hohnstein
2
Road surfaceLength 12.6 km
Description
SummaryThe second stage of the Malerweg trail leads fromWehlen over the Bastei to the Amsel ravine(Amselgrund). We continue past the Amselsee lakeand Amsel waterfall to Rathewalde. Over the highplateau at Rathewalde we continue to theHockstein rock and then descend through theWolfsschlucht gorge to the Polenztal valley. Fromthis point we ascend again to the marketplace inHohnstein through the Schindergraben gorge, whichis close to the castle.
DescriptionThe second stage of the Malerweg trail starts at themarketplace in the town Wehlen. We follow theMeinickestraße street along the river Elbe. We canalready enjoy the beautiful view on the Bastei rockmassif (and later vise versa from there on Wehlen).Especially passing by steamboats in combinationwith the wonderful nature in the background are anexcellent photo opportunity. The Meinickestraßestreet is in this section part of the Elberadweg (Elbebiking route), hence please pay attention when youwant to change the road side! After 500 meters wesee on the left side an information board and awaysign of the Malerweg trail. We follow theancient path Schwarzberggrundweg for 250 metersuphill through a mixed forest until a stone wall, which we cross to the right. The stone wall protectsthe lower located buildings from mud and debris
during heavy rain. Straight ahead the way continuesto the Haldenweg trail! But in order to stay on theMalerweg trail we take the stairs steeply uphill onthe left side. Once the trail runs more flat again, weencounter between birch and pine trees thebeautiful Schwarzberg lookout point. We have awonderful on Wehlen and the Großen Bärensteinrock (Great Bear stone) on the opposite side. Furtheruphill the path continues through a beech forestand after about one kilometer we arrive at the"stone table". The stone table and stone bencheswere set up in 1710 on the occasion of a hunt (aftera silvicultural redrawing of land parcels). Theabandoned forest tavern "Steinerner Tisch" islocated nearby. We continue on the trail and soonrecognize a souvenir shops and a snack bar... we areon the Bastei. From our current position on theBasteistraße street it is only 250 meters to thespectacular Bastei lookout-point. It goes withoutsaying that we first visit the look-point and take alook at the souvenir shops and and gastronomicpossibilities later. Despite the mass tourism on theBastei this particular lookout-point is an absolutemust-do for every Malerweg hiker! Particularlyimpressive is the view on the rock massif of theBastei region, which is located nearby in front of us.The rock wall of the Bastei lookout is 194 metershigh. The Bastei brigde is located underneath thelookout-point and leads to other lookout-points aswell as the rock castle Neurathen. We can enjoyhere an excellent panoramic view. The Elbe valleyand the table mountains of the Saxon Switzerland

form a truly picturesque landscape. In this regiontravelers and artists had plenty motifs for theirinspiration. From the opposite riverbank we alsohave a magnificent view on the Bastei rock massif.Webcam from Laasenhof towards the Bastei.
On the Bastei the "Basteihotel" has a wide variety ofoptions for accommodation and gastronomy. Inaddition to that, it is worth visiting the"Schweizerhaus" (Swiss house), which serves as aNational Park Visitor centre. It houses a prestigiousart exhibition with paintings and prints fromdifferent eras, still all share the same maininspiration of the Saxon Switzerland. Many of themotifs in these pictures can be encountered on theMalerweg trail.
On the Bastei path we continue downhill into theAmselgrund ravine. We just pass by the villageRathen on our right handside. In the valley we firstarrive at the entry port and the ticket house for the"Felsenbühne" (open-air stage). After a few metersthe Amselsee lake appears, where it is possible torent a rowboat or paddleboat. During summer thelake is always filled with sea reared trouts. If you fallout of the boat you can hardly drown as the water isvery shallow... what the trouts might do to you ishowever not so sure.
Our tour continues on the left lakeside and after ashort while we reach on the left side the pathjunction toward the “Schwedenlöcher” gorge. Thispath would have been a good alternative for thedescent from the Bastei. Still it is not part of the newMalerweg trail, as it is often not accessible due tostorm damages. We now walk on huge rough pavingstones from earlier centuries up to the hut"Amselfallbaude". The Amselfallbaude hosts twosnack bars and on the upper floor a National ParkInformation Point. In the historic mountain hutvisitors learn about detailed informations of thenational park philosophy. Some exhibits aredesigned especially interesting and interactive forchildren. The Amselfall waterfall, like theLichtenhainer waterfall is serviced manually duringdry months. However in most cases the naturalwater flow is strong enough to provide a wonderfulphoto opportunity. We leave the Amselfall waterfalland walk uphill over stairs, later on a trail along theGrünbach stream. This part of the Amselgrund
ravine is not as heavily visited by tourists and thelandscape can be described as wild-romantic.Throughout the whole ravine fallen trees and theGrünbach stream are a lovely scenery. After aboutone kilometer from the Amselfall waterfall we reachthe village Rathewalde. The village entrance fromthe valley is fabulous with the slow reconstructionof the mill "Rathewalder Mühle" and the beergarden. To the mill also belongs the "chapel" at themountain side, a so-called "Berganlehnhaus"(mountain hut, known from Tirol) which formerlyserved hikers and guests of the mill as a place tosleep. The clock was installed later. On the oppositeside is located a rentable holiday home that can beaccessed via stone steps and a rock terrace. Thereare even more architectural curiosities: onefarmhouse which directly stands at the steep slopeand another holiday home with the probably lowestcost of land in the village; the small house is builtlike a bridge above the stream Grünbach.
We now arrive at the village square with a guesthouse, church and parking. The Malerweg trail signdirects us again out of the village and towardHohnstein. We follow the trail to the roadHohnsteiner Straße. This road is very busy and thetrail runs parallel to it in the green area. Wecontinue along the road for 700 meters and reach abig intersection at the former racetrack. Here is alsolocated the restaurant Hocksteinschänke. Thosewho have the possibility to return from this point bycar or motorcycle will enjoy a nice ride on thehistoric racetrack of the former Germany ring(Deutschlandring) with a few challenging turns. Thistrack was built between 1933 and 1939 (to somedegree also by prisoners of the formerconcentration camp in Hohnstein), but was alreadyclosed in the same year because of the war. Thelength of the course is 10 kilometers and leads fromour current position on the serpentine-shaped roadWartenbergstraße down into the Polenztal valley. There it continues partially along the river Polenz toHeeselicht, then back on the road Kaiserstraßepassing by the village Hohburkersdorf and finallyarriving again at the restaurant Hocksteinschänke. For the section between the Hocksteinschänke andvillage Hohburkersdorf existed plans to built hugetribunes. During the time after war some illegalraces were organized in this part, but traffic calming

measures (thresholds, bulges) made this almostimpossible. From the restaurant Hocksteinschänkewe follow the road Wartenbergstraße downhill tothe parking Hocksteinparkplatz. There we see againthe familiar Malerweg trail signs. After 250 meterswe arrive at a small stone bridge, then again later atthe refuge nearby the Hockstein rock. In order to getto the small Hockstein lookout-point we only haveto walk a few meters at the outer rock ledge (infront of the steep gorge). If we look downward fromthis "pulpit", the river Polenz and the guest house"Polenztal" are visible. As expected the trail nowdescends steeply into the Polenztal valley. On steelstairs we walk down through the legendary"Wolfsschlucht" (Wolf gorge), which has served as anartistic example for the opera "Der Freischütz" byCarl Maria von Weber. The rock walls in this sectionare standing so close that we have to deal withoncoming hikers skillfully. Once back down, we loseno time and ascend again through the"Schindergraben" gorge up to the castle townHohnstein. The last section takes us past theBärengarten (bear garden). The remains of the wallscan be still recognized, showing the ruins of aformer bear enclosure. From the 17th to 18thcentury bears were kept here for electoral hunts (inthe Dresden castle courtyard!). We are now standingright below the castle Hohnstein, which sitsenthroned on a huge rock. After a few minutes wereach again the romantic marketplace of the townHohnstein.
If you have some time left before returning, youshould definitely visit the castle as well as the townchurch, which was built by George Bähr.
