Viana do castelo

A main feature of the City is the attractive main square that features both a 1553 water fountain and the Misericórdia House that was constructed in 1598.

Located on the high hill of Monte Santa Luzia is the modern basilica that dominates

over the City. From this point there are magnificent views of the surroundings.

Close by is its 15th Century Cathedral that has a fortress-like

feeling and graced with Gothic carved relief's of the apostles.

In the square of São Domingos is the 16th Century church of

the same name.

We recommend you to fly to Porto since it will be easier, faster and cheaper to get to Viana do Castelo.

However, if you plan to spend some extra days in Portugal, you could fly to Lisbon and get to know our lovely capital, and from there get to Viana do Castelo.

Using low cost airlines

Low cost airlines do not allow you to book flights with transit airports!

In case you want to use low cost airlines that reach Porto (easyJet and Ryanair), but there is no direct flights from your nearest airport, you must buy separate tickets from your nearest airport to a destination from where they fly to Porto (i.e. return tickets from your closest airport to any of their destinations that fly directly to Porto – all of them listed in the previous page – and from that intermediary destination you should buy a return ticket to Porto).

Buying in this way may get you cheaper fares than with traditional airlines (which is not always the case, sometimes some few Euros difference do not worth all the hassle!), just remember that sometimes such flights are not reliable and that the connection is not guaranteed by the companies. To ensure you will not lose your flights, you must ensure that you have enough waiting time between those connecting flights!

Please notice that only trains 1, 2, 5, 8, 10 and 12 are direct trains to Viana do Castelo. To reach Viana do Castelo with trains 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 13 you will need to change trains in the station called “Nine”.

By train

Once you have reached the metro station Campanhã, you will need to follow the signs that lead from the Metro Station to the actual Train Station where you can buy your ticket to Viana do Castelo.

The one way tickets vary from 7,70 Euros for a direct train to 6,15 Euros for a train with one stop to change trains. Buying a return ticket will give you access to a 10% discount. International student cards and European Youth Cards grant you discount in the prices of the tickets.

From Lisbon you can get to Viana do Castelo By bus or by train. The trip will take some hours.

There are two main ways to get to Viana do Castelo from Lisbon: by bus (which will be cheaper and there are direct busses), or by train (a bit more expensive and you will need to change trains in Porto, however more comfortable.

You can buy a ticket to Viana do Castelo. There are no direct trains, in any case you will need to get to Porto Campanhã and from there take the train to Viana do Castelo.

By Bus to viana do castelo

We find the train system of Portugal highly reliable and more comfortable from the logistics point of view, however if your choice is for traveling by bus (which will save you some Euros), you could check Rede Expressos website for details on time tables and prices on their direct busses to Viana do Castelo from Lisbon.

The Bus Station of Rede Expressos in Lisbon is located at “Sete Rios”, easily accessible by Metro at the stop “Jardim Zoologico” in the blue line (please see next page for details on the Metro stop).
