Welch elementary school students celebrated Constitution Day on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, during their weekly rise and shine assembly. Students made patriotic hats to wear. The third, fourth, and fifth grade students led the assembly by recit-ing the Preamble to the Constitution through song. Students watched a short clip on the Constitution. They also watched the favorite Saturday Morning School House Rock version of the Preamble. It was a great way to start out the day!

Meet our

New Teacher!

This is a new year, which means we have new faculty! We welcome a new member to the Wildcat’s domain, Hannah Haurghtery.

Mrs. Haurghtery is the new 5th grade teacher. She grew up and graduated high school in Chetopa, Kansas. She cur-rently lives in Altamont, Kan-sas, with her husband Greg and her two kids: Nolan, who is 8, and Jake, who is 6.

Before joining the Wildcats she graduated college at Fort Hays State University. This will be her first year of teach-ing. Her first impression of the Welch School System is “I am very happy to be a part of a close school family!”

Bluejacket for their season opener and defeated the Chief-tains 42-12. The following week Wesleyan Chris-tian came to town, and the Wildcats pounded them with a final score of 38-8. The Wild-cats were able to avenge their loss from last year in a big way by destroy-ing Chetopa 48-0.

year’s team include: Dalton Duede, Jake Peterson, Colton Armstrong, Colton Vanatta, Jake Da-vis-Bissing, Mon-tana Price, Trenton Seigel, Josh Baker, Ethan Clark, Tristan Davis, Austin Bo-hannan, Dylan Piercefield, Gunner Johnson, Ty Earp, Gary Grube, Grey-don Garrettson, Eli Gilman, Dalton Ap-person.

The high school football team has had a rough start. The season opener versus Bluejacket had a very exciting first half, but not a good ending for the Wildcats. From the first play from scrimmage, the team took a knee in memory and honor of Logan Hankins. They played very hard and in-spired all game long. After falling behind 30-12 in the second quarter, the Wildcats battled back to trail just 38-34 heading into halftime. The re-silience shown by the team is encouraging and should show that the boys have a “never give up” attitude. The second half was a different story; and, due to injuries and heat related cramping, Bluejacket won the game with a score of 78-34.

Homecoming was celebrated on week two with Rejoice Christian, the number four ranked team in the state, coming to town. Rejoice is a very tal-ented team that lost in the semifinals to the state champ Laverne last year. The Wildcat defense had a better showing than versus Bluejacket, but Rejoice lived up to their ranking and won the game 45-0.

Members of this year’s team include Ted Sapp, Brandon Hembree, Seth Chapman, Chance Perry, Tra Dodson, Dillon Sherrick, Alex Killough, Austin Vanatta, Jake Adamson, Josh Orler, Cade Arnold, Hunter Haskell, Kelly Reed, Kevin Culver, Blake Brannon, Kyle Greenfeather, Aaron Cherry, Cody Schultz, Corey Miller, and Dalton Paxson.

The Wildcats are in the same situation they were in last year when they rallied and made the play-offs. Don’t give up on these boys. They are work-ing hard and things will pay off for them.

Mrs. Carnes’ Desktop Publishers dedi-cate their time to publish each month’s newsletter, design football programs, and many more projects. These dedi-cated students are: (front) Mikaela McClintick, Lacey Windle, Torey Seigel, Hunter Haskell, Theodore Sapp, Mrs.Carnes, (middle) LaTrisha Honeywell, Paige Hall, Alyssa Rupert, Erika Weston, Garrett Nair, Dillon Sherrick, (back) Chelsey Vanatta, and Tyler Elledge. As a group, we try our best to keep ev-ery student, teacher, faculty, and par-ent informed about what is going on around school. If you have any school activities or information that you want published, please give this information to us, and we will be sure to get it in the newspaper!

This year’s Homecoming on September 13th was very different than in years past. Instead of having two canidates from each grade level, the high school decided to involve each school organization in the canidate selection process. Each organization selected a Queen candidate and King candidate. The student body then voted on Thursday and Friday during lunch. It was a close race, but in the end Lexie Baker (Future Farmers of America) became the Queen, and Hunter Haskell (National Honor Society) became the King!

Left: Rylee Chenoweth (escort), Trish Honeywell (Music Appreciation), Rachel Smith (Teen Advisory Board), Kymbra Grube (Student Council), Chelsey Vanatta (Business Professionals of America), Michelle Sears (National Honor Society), Lexi Baker (Future Farmers of America), Mikaela McClintick (Cheerleading), & Elizabeth Cherry (Art Club).

Left: Kyle Greenfeather (Foot-ball), Corey Miller (Art Club), Cody Schultz (Football), Hunt-er Haskell (National Honor Society), Brandon Hembree (Business Professionals of America), Dillon Sherrick (Fu-ture Farmers of America), Ted Sapp (Student Council), Tyler Elledge (Music Appreciation), Dustin Warner (Teen Advisory Board).

This year’s winners for Football Homecoming Queen and King are Lexie Baker and Hunter Haskell.

This year’s Football Homecoming Flower Girl and Crown Bearer are Madolyn Campidilli and Hayden Smith.
