Dear Colleagues,
Higher education today is a rele-vant feature for successful career
of a modern employee. St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Russia which provided thousands of its graduates with competitive degrees who got leading position in different spheres of activities. For its more than one hundred year history the university accumulated significant experience and expertise, founded internationally reco-gnized scientific schools and customized theoretical fundamentals to be used in practice. Since its foundation, the University has been a scientific center, training highly qualified specialists in diverse spheres.Keeping to traditions and using all the experience gained throughout its long his-tory we are also a University which meets
the changing needs of business, industry, government and the community, introdu-cing new directions of study and research, bringing in state of the art technologies. This emphasis makes our degrees extreme-ly attractive to employers in Russian and international markets. We appreciate positive results of coopera-tion with partners of St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University and we will be happy to develop this successful and fruit-ful cooperation in future. I would also like to wish all the best to our prospective stu-dents.
Rector of SPbSPU

February 19, 1899 by government regulation it was decided to found the Polytechnical
Institute in St. Petersburg. The grand opening of the institution took place on October 2, 1902. Initially theinstitute aimed at training highly qualified engineers and economists. Thus Electrotechnical, Metallurgic, Shipbuilding and Economics Departments started to operate within the institute first.
World famous scientists like D.I.Mendeleev, A.N.Kry-lov, A.S.Popov, D.K.Chernov and many others made a significant contribution into the Institute’s starting and functioning.
In June, 1918 the Institute was renamed into the First Polytechnical Institute.
The University scientists made a significant contribu-tion to different spheres of Russian science and engi-neering. In 1920, within the framework of the Russia’s electrification program, one of the biggest projects on Russia North-West region electrification was carried out by the Institute. In 20 –30-s the scientists played a very important role in elaborating and bringing into life projects on power engineering and metallurgy development.
In 30-s the Institute took an active part in the coun-try’s industrialization.
During World War II the Institute didn’t stop func-tioning, it continued to keep training and conduc-ting scientific researches. The scientists working in the Institute had great achievements, in designing and deve-loping military equipments. Key names here are celebrated aircraft designers O.K.Antonov and N.N.Polikarpov and the best World War II tank de-signer Mikhail Koshkin.
In October 1946 the Polytechnical Institute became subordinate to Ministry of Higher Education, which gave it an opportunity to design and to follow its own academic programs and curriculum.
Beginning with 1950 the Institute became open tointernational students. In 1965 the Institute Prepa-ratory Department for overseas students was foun-ded.
In 1968 a Unique/Special Design Office was founded within the Institute which started development of in-dustrial robotics in Russia. Today it is one of the most significant scientific centers in our country — the Central Research and Experimental-design Institute
UNIVERSITY HISTORY IN BRIEF
7
Since 1980-s university’s scientists and staff were involved in development of modern scientific and study directions such as computer science and infor-mation technologies, material science and nanotech-nologies, ecology and environmental protection.
On February 19, 1999 the St.Petersburg State Poly-technical University celebrated its centennial anniver-sary.
Polytechnical University has actively started to de-velop the new fields of scientific research activities since 2000. In 2003 the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Management and Information technology were founded, in 2005 — the Faculty of Foreign Languages. In 2007 the Polytechnical University won a contest «Innovation University» financed in the framework of the National Project «Education».
In 2010 SPbSPU gained the status «National Re-search University».

The University functions within thestructure of the Federal Admini-
stration of Ministry of Education and Sci-ence and has an academic autonomy, which means that all principal decisions regarding University operations are made by an Academic Council. This body is res-ponsible for defining basic directions of education process and scientific research; it also approves the University budget and makes important administrative decisions. The Chairman of the Academic Council is the Rector of the University.
The University consists of 21 faculties, 150 departments and about 120 scientific labo-ratories, 16 interdisciplinary research labo-ratories, 22 science centers and institutes. SPbSPU trains over 29 000 students per year, over 2 600 of which are foreign citizens who annually come to University to partici-pate in different educational programs. To-day University has about 6 000 staff, inclu-ding teaching staff of 3 000 professionals.
The University campus is conveniently located and is easily accessible by publictransport. It also includes Museum of Uni-versity history, Fundamental Library, Cen-ter of cultural programs, medical center, sport and recreation complex, student dor-mitories and hotel.
Fundamental Library of Polytechnical Uni-versity is one of the largest scientific and technological libraries in Russia and rates

Fundamental Li-brary is the first Russian library which has the Internet connection via high-speed optical communications. The Library information services are developed and supported by the Open Library Systems Center. Fundamental Library is open for welcoming foreign students and for launching mutually beneficial cooperation with foreign partners.
In 1992 the University introduced a mul-tilevel training system. St.Petersburg State Polytechnical University offers a wide ran-ge of degree programs among them 33 Ba-chelor Degree majors, 188 Master Degree programs, 112 Diploma Specialists Degree programs, 88 PhD scientific majors, 67 DSc scientific majors. Duration of studies depends on the program. Generally it takes 4 years to gain Bachelor Degree; 1–1,5 years to obtain Diploma Specialists Deg-ree (a degree, in Russian higher educa-tion system, between Bachelor and Master Degrees); 2 years to obtain Master Degree and 3 years for PhD.
UNIVERSITY TODAY
Around 5 000 students graduate from the University annually, and the total number of graduates comes to 200 thousand.
