There’s a war going on. Right now…right here. The war is inside each of us. It is a war between the old and the new self. In some ways, it is a war for control of our mind and our emotions. Our inner life is the battlefield. Paul tells us: That you should put away the old self…and put on the new self. Today for a few moments I would like to explore some of what this means.

My old self is the self that is separated from God. When I act out of the old self I am acting in a way that does not take into consideration my connection to God. The old self is always thinking about how others will see me. A sign that the old self is still living in me is when I judge the value of an action; not on the basis of the action itself, but on the basis of how the action will be accepted. It is as though one had always to postpone his judgement until he looked at the audience.

The old self goes through his or her day like a robot, without any vision of what their life is about. It is just one day after the next, doing the same thing over and over again, with no freshness or vision of what life means. If your spirituality is just another part of life that fits into its own little box, then you are living out of your old self. People can come to church and seem to obey all of the external rules of the Church, but not really live out of a deep sense of being connected to God. This is a pidgeon holed kind of religion. It disconnects religion from life. In that case it is not really religion at all, because true religion is that which binds us to God in all that we are and all that we do.

St. Paul says that we must be renewed in the spirit of our minds, and to clothe ourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

The sign that we are living in the new self is integration. This means that no matter what we are doing or concerned about, the meaning of it all based on our connection to the Divine. Nothing in our life should be outside of the horizon of the Sacred. If we have to forget about God in order to do something, then we are not living in the new self. I do not mean that we have to consciously be thinking about God all of the time, but our connection to God must be the background for everything that we do in life.

Jesus was firmly grounded in his relationship to His Father. He didn’t have two lives – one that he lived that didn’t take this relationship to his Father into account, and then one that he lived that take this relationship into account. You can plainly see that he would not have been true to who he was if that was the kind of life he lived. It is exactly the same with us. All of us have many things to think about and be concerned with. We may have responsibilities to a wife or husband, to children or parents, to our communities and our country and our world. There are many things pulling us in many different directions. But the unifying factor in all of them must be our relationship to God. Let us pray that we may more and more grow into the new men and women that God is calling us to be.

Faith Formation Registration Information ¨ All families wishing to sign children up for Faith

Formation must be registered members of Holy Spirit. If you haven’t already completed a Parish Census Form to be a part of our wonderful faith community, we ask that you do that first before picking up registration paperwork for Faith Formation.

¨ Children registering for sacramental preparation MUST HAVE completed the required one year of Faith Formation last year, whether it was at Holy Spirit or another parish. If it was at another parish, a Letter of Attendance Verification from that parish MUST be on file with our office prior to registering for sacramental preparation. We will also need a copy of the child’s baptismal certificate before accepting sacramental preparation paperwork.

¨ The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated in the 8th Grade or older and First Communion in the 2nd Grade or older. However, attendance for two consecutive years in Faith Formation/Youth Ministry remains a diocesan mandatory requirement for sacramental preparation. We check attendance when you register for sacramental preparation to ensure children/youth meet the two-year requirement and that attendance was satisfactory the year prior, which means six absences or less for 2017/18, per our Attendance Policy.

¨ For paperwork received on the 5th or 12th, all Faith Formation registration fees/sacramental expenses must be paid in full by Thursday, August 16 before your child will be placed on a class roster. Current class fees are $55.00 for one child; $110.00 for two children; and $125.00 for three or more children. Sacramental expenses are separate. Class fees will increase again as of August 24 so register now! SPECIAL NOTE: We will not accept registrations after Thursday, August 16 in order to prepare for the first day of class and Parent Meet & Greet on Sunday, August 26. You can still obtain paperwork Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but it will not be processed until after the Labor Day Holiday.

¨ Children registering after August 17 will attend class on Sunday, September 9. Additionally, in order to make sure our Parent Meet & Greet runs smoothly, we will be unable to distribute or accept registration paperwork on Sunday, August 26!!

SACRAMENTS & SUCH: We welcome the newest members of our Parish Community who celebrated the Sacrament of Baptism on Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 29: Luis Angel Ajiatez and Haley Marie Parra! Congratulations!

Join us this weekend at all the Masses for a special blessing of school backpacks! Children are invited to bring their school backpacks to Mass and Father will bless both the children and the backpacks for a special send-off before the new school year begins! Additionally, all school educators will be given a special blessing as they, too, begin a new school year. Then join us in the dining room after the 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. & 1 p.m. Masses for an

ice cream social and meet some of your fellow classmates and parishioners. On-Site Faith Formation registration takes place Sunday, August 5 & August 12 after all the MORNING Masses in the dining room. Please see the adjacent

light blue column for detailed information regarding registration. If you’re looking to join our children’s Catechetical Team for the 2018/19 year, contact Deborah on how you can signup to be a catechist, aide, hall/parking lot monitor or substitute!
