Play based learning in P1
• Play is a vital part of the development of all children.
• Play enables pupils to be creative and develop oral language and social skills.
• Early Level of Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence fully supports a play-based approach in P1.

What do our classrooms look
like?

What will happen in the classroom…
• All classes will have a ‘soft start’ first thing in the morning.
• There will be literacy & numeracy input – all pupils will be exposed to this.
• Class Teacher will work with a group of pupils at a time-the rest of the class engage with the play provision in the class.
• We will use the dinner hall and the early level playground for PE.

What will happen in the classroom …
• Pupils will cover all curricular areas andoutcomes within P1.
• IDL (Inter-disciplinary Learning, thematicplanning across all subject areas) is informedby the children’s interest. Where there is anoverwhelming interest in a ‘topic’ this willform the context for learning within theclassroom.

When do I bring my bag? Please bring your bag each day. We will keep bags on a
Thursday and return them to your child on a Monday.

How do I support my child at home?
• Synthetic Phonics (Mr Thorne). We suggest going over the sounds they are learning regularly. Remember, little bursts often are most effective!
• Reading with your child. Again, little and often, pointing out features of texts.
• Check our website every week! We will post updates on our learning and share photos of our week at school This is a brilliant way to encourage your child to share their school life with you. https://dalryprimaryschool.com/

Skills to Develop during Primary 1
• Skills sheet (you will find this in your child’s book bag)
• Self-organisation (keeping track of their own belongings and remembering where they need to be- e.g. in their line when they hear the bell )
• Label EVERYTHING!
