• Gävle is the residencial town of the region Gävleborg

• Gävle has a population of about 94 000, 70 000 living in the town

• The entire North part of Gävle was burnt down in 1869. Out of a population of 13000, 8000 lost their homes. Three elderly women and a goat was killed

• The last tall ship of the Swedish commercial fleet, the brig Gerda b.1868, has been reconstructed in Gävle

• Gävle’s archipelago consist of 446 islands and a coastal line of 280km

• There are more than 200kms of separated cycle path network (compare this with the 400km road network!)

• Salmon and trout fishing is possible in the city centre of Gävle, free of charge

• Gävle’s hockey club Brynäs IF is one of the best clubs in Sweden, 12 time cup winners

• Furuviksparken zoo and Amusement Park in Gävle has the first primate research faciility in Scandinavia

• An icon for Gävle is the giant goat made out of hay, the largest Christmas goat in the world. The goat is erected every festive season.

• One of Sweden’s seven philharmonic orchestras is situated in Gävle.
