1. Welcome and Introduction to FdA Professional Photography

Welcome to FdA Professional Photography delivered at City of Bristol College.

Bristol has a vibrant and diverse creative industry. The programme has been developed in consultation with a range of local media professionals and so reflects the current needs, skills and professional practices in the industry.

Photography professionals will be integral to the delivery of the course providing master classes, workshops, mentoring, lectures and feedback on project work.

The programmes will provide you with opportunities to collaborate with outside agencies as well as possibilities of paid or unpaid commissions from external sources. There may be work experience opportunities with local companies.

This is a practically-based course, encouraging self-development, creativity and building a professional portfolio.

You are given a broad skills based in the first year with the opportunity to specialise in year two.

This programme has been designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge base required to work in your chosen specialism or other graduate opportunities. It is also a platform from which you can undertake additional vocational and academic qualifications.

APEL/APCL possibilities Entry point and module exemption limits will be decided under the guidance of UoP Academic Regulations.

Interview/portfolio requirements All applicants will normally be required to attend an interview and must bring with them examples of photographic and other creative work they have undertaken.

Independent Safeguarding Agency (ISA) / Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) clearance required

No, but students may need a CRB check to engage in particular work-based learning locations. Programme Co-ordinator will advise.

Aims of the Programme:

The programme is intended to:

1. Provide a range of practical photographic experiences which will equip students with the necessary skills to enter the photographic industry as freelance or employee

2. Enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of photography, including its technological, cultural, historical, professional and commercial contexts, which will inform their practice and future development

3. Develop students’ critical and personal awareness, and communication skills, so that they can appreciate and analyse complex issues and become effective independent learners and practitioners

PPB101 Photographic Techniques(AKA Photographing Ourselves)

This module gives the opportunity to develop and improve basic photographic and imaging techniques, providing a platform for future modules; these techniques may be new or familiar, depending on previous experience.

PPB102 Visual LanguageThis module introduces concepts of visual language in photography, and the practical use of visual codes to create subjective and symbolic content in photographic imagery.It will also cover creative thinking, research and communication skills (including essay writing) linked to the students’ own photographic practice.

PPB104 Professional StudiesThis module covers the key aspects of professional practice, business skills and ethics required for working in the photographic industry; It is expected that these principles will be developed and applied throughout later modules.

PPB105 Silver-Based ImagingThis module covers the fundamentals of photographic imaging using silver-based materials and technology; including the use and understanding of camera and lens systems, and the skills and knowledge associated with darkroom work.Much of this knowledge underpins digital photography as well as silver-based.

PPB106 Digital ImagingThis module covers the fundamentals of digital image capture, storage, processing and workflow, and gives an introduction to image manipulation and colour management.

PPB107 Studio PhotographyThis module develops students’ studio photography skills and knowledge, enabling them to use more complex lighting setups and work with a range of subjects and materials.

PPB201 Location PhotographyThis module extends students’ understanding of the factors involved in photography on location, and allows them to apply this in the design and production of a body of location photographs.

PPB202 Critical PaperThis module enables students to define an area of research related to their specialism, and gives them the critical understanding and communication skills to undertake that research and present it to an audience.

PPB203 Specialist PracticeThis module progresses students from set assignments to self-devised, and allows experimentation and the development of personal practice in their chosen photographic specialism.

PPB204 Independent PracticeThis module allows students to continue their independent self-development, and produce a body of specialist work which represents a culmination of their photographic work on this programme.

PPB205 Professional DevelopmentIn this module students reflect on their achievements and learning during the programme and make plans for what they will progress on to after completion; the module also allows for the building of a suitable portfolio for progression, and participation in the programme’s end of year exhibition.

PPB206 MediationThis module enables students to put their work into the public arena, using means and media chosen by discussion with their tutor. This might include setting up a website, holding an exhibition, producing, publishing and distributing material, or other methods.
