(League secretaries are responsible for reporting award scores to the SBA).

Q. What should I do to get ready for the upcoming bowing season?A. First thing to do is go to your local pro shop and have them check your

equipment for fit. Then have them resurface and clean your bowling balls if needed. This will put them back close to factory specs. See what new bowling balls have been released and ask them if you might need one to fill out your arsenal. Ask about lessons and sign up for a few. Your muscle memory is low at this time. You have forgotten about the mistakes that you were making last season. New things will take hold much quicker. Then, of course, practice is the best thing you can do for your game. Don’t forget those spares. Take one practice session a week and devote it to spares. Spares in bowling are like putting in golf. Not making spares will quickly ruin your game.

Q. How often should I buy a new ball?A. There is a different answer to this question for everybody. If you are a

once-a-week bowler and keep up ball maintenance (cleaning after use) the ball will be fine for, at the very least, a season or two even three. If you bowl more than that and even weekend tournaments you might only get only one season out of a ball. There is another factor some reactive cover stocks soak up oil faster than others. They require more maintenance than others and will die quicker. My rule of thumb is if the ball stops hooking like it did when new or quits carrying then I take it in for a thorough clean-ing and resurface. Have the pro shop remove as much oil as they can then sand and refinish the ball. That will usually get it close to when you first got it. This will last for a few months. If for some reason you still feel it isn’t working, donate it to the juniors and buy a new ball.

Q. I am joining a league this season for the first time in many years. All of my equipment is old and out of date. What ball would you recommend for a bowler coming back to the sport? I used to average in the 190s.

A. All manufacturers make very good equipment today so they will all make a ball that will fit your game. Because I am a member of Roto Grip’s am-ateur staff and I believe in the company’s products, I use Storm or Roto Grip bowling balls for my game exclusively. I believe they make the best and most reliable bowling balls on the market today. So go to your pro shop ask them to watch you bowl and they can determine which of the different balls they make will work best for your game. With both of these company’s there will be several to choose from. By the way don’t forget to purchase a spare ball. In the past, a spare ball was not necessary but today it is a necessity.

Q. I have been bowling recreationally for several years but have recently tak-en more of an interest and am joining a league. My timing is good but I always seem to drop the ball with a loud thud. This seems to cause me to not have much accuracy and affects the roll on the ball. What would your advise on this problem?

A. First I would get to your local pro shop as fast as you can. Have them check your ball to make sure the grip is proper. You can’t bowl correctly with a bad fit. Then once that is fixed take a lesson or six from a qualified instructor. This is to make sure your timing is what you think it is. Many times it feels good to us but truthfully is not very good. Lessons are not expensive and last a lifetime.

Chittenango’s Casey Smith earns national All-American bowling honors

Chittenango se-nior Casey Smith was among 10 na-tional varsity bowl-ers selected to the 10th annual Dexter/United States Bowl-ing Congress High School All-American Team which was an-nounced in June.

Smith was the Section III female individual champion this past season and she finished third in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association state tournament. As a member of the Section 3 All-Star team, she won the state title in 2014 and took third in 2015.

Smith also is a two-time first team All-Onondaga High School League bowler. She won the County Tournament singles title with a 727 series. She finished second in the league with a 206 average.

In addition to Smith, Jonathan Bowman of Peru High School was the other New York State selection. He was the New York State Public High School Athletic Asso-ciation singles champion his senior year and led Peru to the Section VII team title. He was an all-section selec-tion each year and set conference records for high game, series and average.

The 2014-2015 team marks the 10th year the Dexter/USBC High School All-American Team has been select-ed. This year’s team includes Jerod Hromek of Towanda, Kansas, a junior who has won the Kansas High School Activities Individual State bowling title the last two years.

“We’re excited once again to recognize 10 high school bowlers who have excelled on the lanes and in the class-room,” Bud Clapsaddle, Vice President of Dexter Bowl-ing, said. “We’re also proud to mark a decade of the Dex-ter/USBC High School All-American Team.”

Dexter and USBC annually select five boys and five girls from around the country to form the Dexter/USBC High School All-American team. Student-athletes are nominated by their coach or athletic director, and must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average.
