Summer 2021 has been very busy for the district. Many updates have been made to buildings and grounds, such as painting of the WLES gym, creation of an intervention classroom at WLMS, new swings on the playground, updates made to the PreK playground area, parking lot maintenance, updates to HS locker rooms, a new concrete wall support added to the football field/track visitor area, and installation of additional touchless equipment. The Technology Department has worked tirelessly to install new ActivPanels in classrooms, install all new teacher desktops, update & maintain all student Chromebooks for grades K-12, update our phone service, and update our security camera server as well as other tasks. The 2021-2022 school year will bring a few changes to the teaching staff at WL. WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL! Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year at Warrensburg-Latham CUSD #11. I look forward to seeing all our returning students and meeting the students and families that are new to the Warrensburg-Latham School District. I am excited to begin my 2nd year as the Warrensburg-Latham Superintendent and am very hopeful that I will be able to meet many more families and community members in person this year. We are very happy to welcome the following new certified staff:

Tristan Birt – WLHS PE & HS Wrestling Caryn Fuiten – WLES 2nd Grade Teacher

Kevin Jones - –WLMS Math Teacher Nicole Jones – WLES Special Education Teacher

The teachers have been participating in summer professional development to enhance curriculum & instruction for English Language Arts, math, science, social emotional learning, and technology use. Teachers and administrators are creating and adjusting new systems of intervention and enrichment for students. The administration, WL Board of Education, and I have spent most of the summer consulting with legal counsel, representatives from ISBE, IDPH, and the Macon County Health Department, to determine our plan for school in the fall. We feel that our attention must be placed on the academic growth, learning recovery, and the social-emotional needs of our students. The following are priorities for 2021-2022:

• Full in-person learning environment • Traditional school day from 8:00 a.m.-3:01 p.m. with an early dismissal of 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays for

teacher professional development • Breakfast and lunch served at school

• District-wide academic screener for math and English Language Arts • Credit recovery program at WLHS • 1st-12th grade one-to-one with Chromebooks; Kindergarten will have Chromebooks in each classroom • Continued use of technology-enhanced instruction (i.e., Google Classroom)

We are continuing to diligently examine, analyze, and evaluate the ever-changing guidance regarding COVID-19 preventative mitigation strategies. We expect to receive updated guidance and clarity in the coming weeks. In order to finalize our reopening plan, we will continue to watch and monitor current local conditions as we plan for school opening on August 18. While we acknowledge the conflicting community views, please know we will be deliberate in our approach and are planning for a successful 2021-2022 school year with a focus on student learning and engagement, as well as safety. The WL Board of Education is planning to hold a special meeting on August 10 for the consideration of approval of a return to school plan. Upcoming WL Dates/Events:

My commitment is to lead the district with integrity and work with staff to provide a well-rounded education that allows each student to reach his/her fullest potential. I have very high expectations for myself, staff and our students. In return, I ask for a commitment from all parents and guardians of students. Please help your student(s) reach his/her fullest potential by ensuring they arrive at school on time, attend daily, and engage with the teachers. Please speak positively about school and staff members in front of your children. We will continue to make all attempts to make school a positive and fun environment even while we still experience layers of COVID-related prevention. If you have a concern, please begin by contacting your child’s teacher. If you still have concerns, after working with your child’s teacher, please follow up with the building principal. We want to work collaboratively to make this year a positive learning experience for your student. Best wishes for a successful school year! All meals served in the elementary cafeteria automatically follow the rules, so all meals served to an elementary student will be free.

The only time an elementary student would be charged for something is if the student takes a second milk with the free meal OR if a student only takes a milk. The charge for a second milk or milk only is $.30.

Your student needs to choose at least 3 of the 4 items (but may take up to 4) and ONE ITEM MUST BE A FRUIT for the meal to be free.

Student only chooses 1 item If the student takes just a breakfast sandwich, this is only one item. If the student adds a fruit and a fruit juice cup or milk, then it would count as a meal. If only one item is taken, there will be a charge for that item since it does not make a meal.

Student only chooses 2 items If the student takes a pop tart and a fruit juice, this is only 2 items. If the student adds a fruit or milk, then it would count as a meal. If only two items are taken, there will be charge for those items since they do not make a meal.

Student takes extras of the entrée or a second meal To make a meal, only one entrée per tray is allowed. Only one free/reduced breakfast is allowed per day. If an extra entrée is taken with a meal, there will be a charge for it. If a second meal is taken, there will be a charge for it.

Student takes a large milk, large juice or bottled water The large milk, large juice and bottled water are not considered part of a meal, so these items do not count as a component to make a meal. There is always an extra charge for these items.

NEWS FROM YOUR PRINCIPALS Dear WL Families The 2021-2022 school year is here!! We are looking forward to the upcoming school year and hope it brings lots of learning and normalcy! Learning Structure We are scheduled to be back in session full-time with in-person learning. Remote learning will only be available to select students that meet specific requirements from the state and will only be eligible to participate in remote learning for specified amounts of time. If we have any remote learners, they will more than likely complete their work through an online educational platform and will not be taught by a WL teacher. School Hours School hours are 8:00 a.m.-3:01 p.m. daily, except for Wednesday when all students have a 2 p.m. dismissal so teachers can participate in professional development. Breakfast/Lunch Students who eat breakfast at school may enter the building at 7:30 a.m. or get off the bus when it arrives at school. Students who arrive at 7:50 a.m. or after may not eat breakfast at school so that they can report to class on time. Students who do not eat breakfast at school may enter the building at 7:50 a.m. School lunches are free for our students again this school year. Parent pick-up and drop-off Further information will be provided about parent pick-up and drop-off procedures at the beginning of August. Open House Open House will be August 16 from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. We are asking that students with last names A-J arrive between 6:00-6:15 p.m. and last names K-Z arrive between 6:45-7:00 p.m. to help with social distancing. If your family is not able to attend at the assigned time, please come at whatever time works for you. First Day Students' first day of school is August 18. This is a Wednesday, so students will be dismissed at 2 p.m. Kindergarten Only: The first half of the alphabet (last names) will come on the 18th. The last half will come on the 19th. This allows the kindergarten teachers to provide extra support to their students on the first day as they acclimate to kindergarten. All kindergarten students will be present on the August 20 and moving forward. Kindergarten teachers will let families know which day your child will attend. Pre-K students’ first day will be Monday, August 23. Disclaimer We are writing this at the end of June, so we are not able to provide specifics on the information I’m sure many of you are waiting for (ISBE and IDPH have released their guidelines and mandates, but I anticipate these may change by August 2021). We will absolutely share information as we receive it. Principals have an 11-month contract and do not officially report to work in July so if you don’t receive a prompt response from phone calls, emails, and/or messages, it’s because we are taking some much-needed time with our families. The superintendent will be in the office and will deliver any updated information to families as we receive it.
