ContaCt InfoPastor’s Letter — PoPe franCIs UnIfIes the ChUrCh

Today in Rome in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Fran-cis is canonizing two saints, two former popes, John XXIII and John Paul II, of the last 50 years.

Pilgrims from all over the world will flock to Rome for the occasion, but especially the faithful from Poland and Italy. While Catholics from these countries will dominate the crowd, Pope Francis didn’t select these two popes because of their home crowd advantage. I believe that Pope Francis has a greater purpose in mind.

For about the last 25 years, the Church, like almost every other segment of society, has been fractured with division paralleling the cultural and political divide. Popes are either too liberal or too conserva-

tive. In selecting men who appeal to these two segments of the Church, Pope Francis is trying to show that in the Roman Catholic Church there is room for both. The Pope wants to unify the Church, or at least demonstrate that progressives and traditionalists can occupy pews in the same churches. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, “The Pope, Bishop of Rome and Peter’s successor, ‘is the perpetual and visible source and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful’” (Canon 882). As the visible sign of unity in the Church, Pope Francis hopes to set an example in canonizing these two former popes.

There is historical precedent for such an event and purpose. While many critics of the Church would like to suggest that the Church is one sided on at least three occasions, popes have embraced both sides. During the controversy over the Avignon (French) papacy, Catherine of Siena took one position in support of the Italians and Vincent Ferrer sided with the French. Both Dominicans were canonized by the Church. In the 16th century, two of the greatest saints and reformers, John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila, held noticeably different opinions about mystical experience and the Church embraced them both. In the 17th century, it was a pope who settled the con-troversy between the Dominicans and Jesuits over grace and embraced the two distinct positions. The institutional Church can and has often embraced what some would consider opposing positions. It is actually this diver-sity which has allowed the Church to flourish and thrive and not dissolve into stagnation and irrelevancy. Both sides had some of the truth and the Church recognized this reality.

Pope John XXIII has long been recognized as the pope who opened the windows of the Church, allowing fresh air to clear away the musty smell of centuries of open conflict with the modern world. Somehow, this is per-ceived as progressive. Pope John Paul II, along with some world leaders of the time, helped redraw the map of Europe and reached out to Jews like no pope has done since St. Peter. Somehow, this is interpreted as traditional. The Holy Spirit worked through both. Let us celebrate with Christians around the world in the canonization of these two monumental popes who have not only changed the Church, but in many ways our world. Saints Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II, pray for us.

aroUnd CoLUMbIa & the dIoCeseNEWS FROM OLLIS — PRAYING WITH YOUR FIVE FINGERSTeach your child this simple way to pray. The thumb is the clos-est finger to you. So pray for those who are closest to you. The next finger is the index finger. Pray for those who teach you and heal you. The third finger is the tallest one. It reminds us of our leaders, those in government, and those who have author-ity. The fourth finger is the ring finger. It is our weakest finger and reminds us to pray for those who are sick or have problems. Our smallest finger reminds us to pray for ourselves. This creative prayer has been around for a long time, and is often credited to Pope Francis when he was the Archbishop of Argentina.

DEACON FORMATION INFORMATION MEETINGThis year is a recruitment year for men who may be interested in information about becoming a Deacon for our Church. Five meetings have been scheduled throughout the Diocese. The meet-ing time in Columbia will be on Tuesday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart. Interested men and their wives are encouraged to attend. Deacons and men in formation and their wives will be available to answer questions and share experiences. General information about the formation program, qualifications and expectations will also be shared. A discernment year for forma-tion will begin in January 2015. If you are interested or you know of someone who should be please find a meeting location close to you and plan to attend. For more information contact Deacon Ray L. Purvis, Diaconate Office Coordinator, 573.635.9127, Ex. 223 or by email to [email protected].

SEPARATION/DIVORCE ISSUES SUPPORT GROUPA support group for individuals experiencing separation and/or divorce issues, meets the first Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., in the Cathedral of St. Joseph Cry Room. Please contact Lucas Knipp at (573)-353-4046, or Paul Rockers at (573) 301-9865 if you are interested in attending or would like more information. The next meeting will be May 6, 7:00 p.m.

This year’s Lenten project was for our Sister Parish in El Salvador. Our goal was to raise $7,500 for a Co-op

farming program among 40 families in the parish. We managed to exceed that goal with all your help! The Edge kids helped raise $546 for the project with their Cookie/Soup Jar Mix sales. This money will help pay for supplies such as seeds, fertilizer and plastic pipes. It will also pro-vide the families with training by the SHARE Foundation about how to successfully run the Co-op program in order to be more self-sufficient.

COME REMEMBER THE 70S AT NEWMAN! TONIGHT AT 7 PMWe are ready to reminisce! If you were a student or resident pa-rishioner (or just a casual visitor) back in the 70s please join us for a walk down memory lane in the Disciples Room. As a legacy of our Jubilee Year, we are collecting anecdotes, pictures, and other memo-rabilia about the history of the Newman Center. We will be having multiple sessions — each one devoted to recalling the people, events, programs, ministries, etc. of a particular decade. Keep watching for announcements for the 80s in May, the 90s in June and the 00s later in the summer. We encourage you to bring pictures or other mementos to add to the conversation. If you can’t join us but have info to share, please email [email protected].

YGC BBQ | SATURDAY, MAY 3 | 1:00 PM | COSMO PARK YGC will meet at the Garrison Shelter at Cosmo Park (off Busi-ness Loop 70 West) for a BBQ! Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided and individuals are encouraged to bring a side dish or dessert to share, though it isn’t required. Individuals are asked to bring their own beverage. Sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, tennis courts and a large grassy area are nearby to enjoy some outdoor sports. If anyone needs directions or a ride to the park, contact Liz Raine at [email protected].

FINAL CEP/EDGE CLASSES COMING UP: The Sunday group’s last class will be May 4 and the Wednesday group’s (including EDGE) last class will be May 7.

SAVE THE DATE FOR VBS! Our Vacation Bible School Summer Blast will be July 7-11! Watch the bulletin and the web for details.

kIds’ CornerFor Kids: Jesus’ message to his Apostles this week is “Don’t be Afraid!” They had locked themselves in a room, afraid that those who killed Jesus would come for them too. Jesus appears to them even though the door is locked to show them that he is alive, and that God is stronger than any evil and even death!

For Parents: Poor Thomas is most famous for needing proof, but his reaction is only natural. Easter is joyful for kids, but it can be hard for the adults to believe that nothing, not even death, should make us afraid because of the power and love of God. Pray for faith to keep believing in the Resurrection so you can share in the great joy of Easter!
