exactEarth Wins Contract with NATONATO represents the interests of 28 member states from North America and Europe and is dedicated to safeguarding the freedom and security of its member countries by political and military means. exactEarth is very excited with this contract win as exactAIS data will play a crucial role in crisis management and peacekeeping efforts made by NATO.

The NATO Maritime Operation Centres (MOC Northwood and MOC Naples) and NATO Shipping Centre (NSC) will be acquiring exactAIS® data to be used within Operation Ocean Shield, a counter-piracy operation in the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden and Somali Basin, consisting of naval vessels from NATO nations as well as elements ashore. exactAIS data will also be used in support of Operation Active Endeavour, NATO’s maritime counter-

terrorism operation in the Mediterranean.

The NATO Shipping Centre at Northwood is NATO’s gateway to the merchant shipping community, and NATO will actively warn vessels in the vicinity of known Pirate Attack Group (PAG) activity. Once PAG movement has been identified, exactAIS data can be used to identify vessels in the vicinity to assist. NATO will utilize exactAIS data to create a picture of white shipping and to aid in identifying suspicious behaviour, contributing to their overall Recognized Maritime Picture (RMP).

EMSA Renews Service Level Agreement with exactEarthThe European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) have recently renewed their service level agreement for Satellite AIS data with exactEarth. EMSA have utilized exactAIS® data over the last year for a number of projects including use within EMSA’s Maritime Surveillance Picture (MARSURV) service, Project INDALO, EUNAVFOR counter-piracy operations as well as within the European Fishery Control Agency (EFCA).

exactAIS data played an integral role in supporting Project INDALO with Frontex (European Border Management Agency) for establishing measures around illegal immigration in the Mediterranean Sea and more generally for controlling the maritime external borders of the European Member States. The EUNAVFOR Naval counter-piracy operations relied on exactAIS data to help improve maritime security off the coast of Somalia and in the Indian Ocean by providing a better picture for overall maritime domain awareness in these areas.

Cool O This Summer with exactAIS Arctic Archive™The Arctic Region is warming at roughly twice the global average rate with the reduction in summer sea ice being both one of the clearest indicators and one of the most dramatic effects of this trend. Shipping in the Arctic is on the increase as the sea ice retreats further each year and the region opens up to further industrial development. The Arctic has traditionally proved problematic in capturing a true picture of the area’s shipping. The remoteness and environmental factors have contributed to minimal and traditionally imprecise coverage in the area.

The exactAIS® system has exceptional coverage in the Arctic region, capturing every vessel movement to create a truly complete maritime picture of the area. exactEarth now offers exactAIS Arctic Archive, providing an unprecedented view into shipping in the remote Arctic region. Data has been processed and summarized from exactEarth’s extensive archive and is now available in annual sets covering July-October of 2010 and 2011.

What Will EV1 Mean to You?The successful launch of EV1 expands exactEarth’s constellation of satellites to four. EV1 is the highest performance AIS detection satellite ever placed into orbit. “We are very excited to bring this new satellite into service and introduce improvements

to our customers,” said Phil Miller, VP of Engineering. “During the next several months the satellite will be commissioned as we check out all of its systems, take measurements and calibrate the instruments and sensors on board. We will also begin to receive AIS data and ensure that it achieves the performance that it was designed to deliver. After commissioning is complete, we will introduce the AIS messages it collects to our line- up of exactAIS® products.”

With the addition of EV1, our customers will see the following improvements to our services:

• Improvements in First Pass Detection (FPD). When EV1 flies over the dense shipping regions of the world, it will detect more ships in a single pass than any other satellite launched to date. All previous systems take multiple passes over these regions to detect most ships whereas EV1 will do it the first time.

• A variety of regions around the world can expect to see significant improvements in ship detection rates.

• The maximum gap between subsequent detection of individual ships (a.k.a. revisit time) will decrease.

exactEarth in Action Our Senior Director of Maritime Products, Peggy Browning recently attended an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) meeting, where permission was granted to use six new channels for dedicated AIS tracking channels (24, 84, 25, 85, 26 and 86), on an experimental basis, and channels 27 and 28 for additional AIS communications. IALA will need to develop a plan for using the new channels and the meeting took the first step into defining how e-NAV will answer and solve user requirements identified by the IMO.

exactEarth exhibited recently at the Esri User Conference in July in San Diego. We had our most successful Pin the Sail on the Ship™ competition to date and we were pleased to announce our winner- Major Ulrich Senger of the Swedish Forces. Congratulations!
