HEART PROGRAMBack by popular demand again! The H.E.A.R.T. Program® (Health Empowerment and Real Transformation) is a holistic curriculum ad-

dressing many common health issues. This course is offered, thanks to a grant, free of charge to all participants, who will learn methods

to create a healthier lifestyle and improve their overall well-being. It is instructed in eight two-hour modules. Classroom time includes

lectures, food and exercise demonstrations, guest speakers, and a textbook that contains whole food plant-based recipes, mindfulness

techniques, herbal remedies, safe exercises for beginners, alternatives to taking pain medication, tips for healing the gut, managing

weight, autoimmune diseases, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, and much more.

This program is back to educate even more people and will be held every Thursday in September and October of 2018 (9/6-10/25),

from 12:30-2:30 PM. Enrollment for this course is limited, due to the space available, and will take place via lottery of those who have

signed up through the Wilbraham Senior Center. The lottery list is open now. All those ages 60 or older who are interested in attending

are strongly encouraged to call the Wilbraham Senior Center at (413) 596-8657 to be added to the list. Those who are selected from the

lottery will be contacted for confirmation. Priority will be given to Wilbraham residents and those who have not yet taken the course. If you

have already participated in this program, you are not eligible to be enrolled again at this time.

Michelle Caron, RMT, CYT, Educator, Herbalist, and Holistic Health Coach, is the owner of Harmony Way in Wilbraham, MA, which is

sponsoring this event. She created the evidence-based H.E.A.R.T. Program and wrote the accompanying nearly 100-page textbook after

seeing an overwhelming need for more preventive education for people of all ages regarding the current health crisis that our country is

experiencing. To learn more about what this program offers, please see: www.harmonywayhealing.com. This innovative program is the

first of its kind; so don't hesitate to sign up if you are interested in attending.

Page 7: Welcome Fall Lunch

Wilbraham Emergency Response Disability Form If you want your police department, fire department or other emergency agency to know about your special need

when you call 9-1-1 in an emergency, you need to fill out a form. When your 9-1-1 call is answered at your local

Public Safety Answering Point, the 9-1-1 system automatically displays your name, address and telephone num-

ber on the dispatcher’s screen. At your request, codes will be displayed on the dispatcher’s screen that will identi-

fy the disability indicators that have been reported for you or someone living with you at your address. These

codes will help the dispatchers at the 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point to communicate with the caller and

provide useful information to your responding public safety agency. The information is CONFIDENTIAL and

will ONLY appear at the dispatcher’s location when a 9-1-1 call originates from YOUR address. The infor-

mation you provide for input to the 9-1-1 system will remain until you request a change or make a request to have

it removed. For more information regarding the program and application, please contact Barbara at 596-8379.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alert Forms

Attention Caregivers of Alzheimer’s or dementia family members and/or friends. The Wilbraham Police Depart-

ment has a registry specifically for residents with these issues. In case of an emergency the Police Department

will have an updated picture of resident and their medical information and caregiver contact. This is a very valu-

able tool especially if the individual might wander or have difficulty with memory. Please note that all infor-

mation is CONFIDENTIAL and will ONLY appear at the dispatchers location when a 911 call originates from

your address. Forms are available in my office. Any questions or concerns please contact Barbara at 596-8379.

Electric Discount from National Grid If you are a residential customer and meet the re-quirements listed below then you may be eligible for a discount on your monthly electric bill. This will save you money and will not affect the service you currently receive. To apply, please contact Barbara Harrington. She will help you complete the appli-cation. Eligibility Criteria: Your electric bill is in your name; you are currently qualified to receive fuel assistance benefits or are participating in one of the following programs: EAEDC, Food Stamps, WIC, Head Start, Mass Health, National School Lunch Program, Public Housing, School Breakfast Program, Supplemental Security Program, TAFDC, Veterans Programs - 115 benefits, DIC surviving parent, WIC.

SOCIAL SERVICES—Barbara Harrington Title III program information identifies the MA Executive Office of Elder Affairs and the Federal Administration for Community Living as funding sources

BROWN BAG PROGRAM

Food for Elders program provides a free bag of healthy groceries to eligible seniors once a month at local senior centers and community organizations. The food items are specifically selected to meet seniors’ special dietary re-quirements to help them stay healthy and ac-

tive. The Brown Bag program is for people over the age of 55 who meet certain income guidelines. If you qualify for SSI, Medicaid, Fuel Assistance, Veteran’s Aid or have a documented disability for which you receive SSDI, you probably qualify to receive Brown Bag monthly grocer-ies. For more information and application contact Barba-ra Harrington. New pickup date is Friday, September 21st. If not picked up by requested time, bag will be donated to other residents.

Fuel Assistance Recertification It is hard to believe that it is that time of year again to recertify for Fuel Assistance. If you have

been on the program in the past you will be receiving notification from Valley Opportunity

Council for the 2018-2019 heating season. A reminder list will be included for items needed to

complete the application. Once you gather your information contact Barbara for an appoint-

ment. If you have any questions regarding the program do not hesitate to call me.

KNOX BOX PROGRAM

The Wilbraham Senior Center, in conjunction with the Wilbraham Fire Department, sponsors a

Knox Box program for seniors in town. The Knox Box hangs on the outside of the front door and

holds a spare key that the Fire Department can use to enter the home in case of emergency. The

Fire Department is the only department authorized and capable to unlock the box to retrieve the

spare key. Residential Lockbox Criteria*

1.Individual has been identified as having multiple conditions: obvious physical frailty (e.g. problems w/mobility and/or

balance, history of falls), existence of other health problems, lives alone, prior emergency calls.

2. Individual has/needs Personal Emergency Response System.

A donation of $12.00 per year is asked for the lease of a Knox Box. This fee may be waived by the Wilbraham Coun-

cil on Aging if there is financial hardship. Questions or concerns please call Barbara Harrington at 413 596-8379.

The Senior Center is looking for

birthday cards or blank cards

that can be used as birthday

cards. We have a wonderful

volunteer, Elaine Lavoie, who

sends out monthly birthday

cards to Wilbraham residents

celebrating 90 plus years. Cards

can be dropped off

at the Senior Cen-

ter office. Thanks

in advance for

your help!

FILE OF LIFE—PERSONAL SIZED Everyone should receive prompt, quality medical care, especially when it matters most – in an emer-gency. The File of Life is designed to make the difference between life and death by providing abso-lutely vital information to first responders. The File of Life is easy for patients to use and immediately recognized by local EMTs, police and fire departments nationwide. The Senior Center has mailed re-fridgerator magnet Files of Life to senior households in the past, and hope that everyone has filled it out and placed it on the fridge. Thanks to a grant from Greater Springfield Senior Services, Inc., we were able to purchase personal sized File of Life—great to keep in your car, purse or wallet. The form asks for the same information as the magnet pouch, just in a convenient size to carry with you. In an emergency, there’s panic, confusion, fear, a terrible sense of urgency and helplessness. Not only the person in need, but everyone around them – including the first responders – is affected. In this sce-nario, could you provide an accurate medical history, list of medications, existing conditions and aller-gies in fewer than 10 seconds for you or your loved one? For the overwhelming majority of people, the answer is no. That is where the File of Life becomes critical. Please stop by the Senior Center and pick up one or two for yourself.

From the Director’s Desk, What a summer! Hot and rainy at the same time. I think everyone is

looking forward to a beautiful fall season in Wilbraham. We welcomed

a new van driver/custodian Greg Schmutte to the Senior Center over the

summer. Greg drives on Mondays and Tuesdays and fills in for the

other van drivers.

In October, the staff will be attending the annual Mass Council on Ag-

ing conference at the Cape. Veteran’s Agent Jered Sasen will be attend-

ing the annual state Veteran’s conference the same week, so the Senior

Center will be closed Wednesday-Friday, October 24-26. All activities

and programs have been cancelled for those three days.

The search for a new larger Senior Center continues. No news to share

as of now, but stay tuned...I feel that this is our time!!!
