Biomass is biological material derived PLANT MATERIAL from living, or recently living organisms. In the context of biomass for energy this is osten used to mean plant based material, but biomass can
The carbon used to construct biomass is absorbed from the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (CO2) by plant life, using energy from the sun. Plants may subsequently be eaten by animals and thus converted into animal biomass. However the primary absorption is performed by plants. If plant material is not eaten it is generally either broken down by micro-organisms or burned:

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
Biomass is carbon based and is composed of a mixture of organic molecules containing hydrogen, usually including atoms of oxygen, osten nitrogen and also small quantities of other atoms, including alkali, alkaline earth and heavy metals. These metals are osten found in functional molecules such as the porphyrins which
• If broken down it releases the carbon back to the atmosphere, mainly as either carbon dioxide (CO2) or methane (CH4), depending upon the conditions and processes involved.
If burned the carbon is returned to the atmosphere as CO2.

FOSSIL FUELS CATEGORIES OF BIOMASS MATERIALS
Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are also derived from biological material, however material that absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere many millions of years ago.
Within this definition, biomass for energy can include a wide range of materials. The realities of the economics mean that high value material for which there is an alternative market, such as good quality, large timber, are very unlikely to become available for energy applications. However there are huge resources of residues, co-products and waste which could potentially become available, in quantity, at relatively low cost, or even negative cost where there is currently a requirement to pay for disposal. There are five basic categories of material:
Virgin wood, from forestry, arboricultural activities or from wood processing
Energy crops: high yield crops grownspecifically for energy applications
Agricultural residues: residues from agriculture harvesting or processing
Food waste, from food and drink manufacture, preparation and processing, and post-consumer waste
Industrial waste and co-products from manufacturing and industrial processes.
As fuels they offer high energy density, but making use of that energy involves burning the fuel, with the oxidation of the carbon to carbon dioxide and the hydrogen to water (vapour). Unless they are captured and stored, these combustion products are usually released to the atmosphere, returning carbon sequestered millions years ago and thus contributing increased atmospheric concentrations.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BIOMASS AND FOSSIL FUELS
The vital difference between biomass and fossil fuels is one of time scale. Biomass takes carbon out of the atmosphere while it is growing, and returns it as it is burned. If it is managed on a sustainable basis, biomass is harvested as part of a constantly replenished crop. This is either during woodland or arboricultural management or coppicing or as part of a continuous programme of replanting with the new growth taking up CO2 from the atmosphere at the same time as it is released by combustion of the previous harvest.
This maintains a closed carbon cycle with no net increase in atmospheric CO2 levels.
6 Wood Pellets
Wood pellets have increased tremendously in popularity as a heating fuel during recent years, with many homeowners and commercial facilities choosing pellet stoves or boilers over traditional wood-fired equipment due to their relative ease of use. As a result, the demand for fuel pellets has also grown quickly. However, wood is not
smallest scale (single homeowners manufacturing for their personal use only) to the largest commercial plants producing more than 500 million tons of pellets per year.
PROPERTIES OF BIOMASS PELLETS the only suitable feedstock for manufacturing pellet fuel. A wide array of biomass materials can be used to
Biomass pellets are generally a superior fuel when compared to their raw feedstock. Not only are the pellets more energy dense, they are also easier to handle and use in automated feed systems. These advantages, when combined with the sustainable and ecologically sound properties of the fuel, make it very attractive for use.
manufacture pellets, most notably perennial grasses such as switchgrass or miscanthus. Not only that, but the necessary equipment for making pellets is available at a variety of sizes and scales, which allows for everything from the

The standard shape of a fuel pellet is cylindrical, with a diameter of 6 to 8 millimeters and a length of no more than 38 millimeters. Larger pellets are also occasionally manufactured; if they are more than 25 millimeters in diameter, they are usually referred to as “briquettes.”
A high-quality pellet is dry, hard and durable, with low amounts of ash remaining aster combustion. According to the Pellet Fuels Institute, “premium” pellets (which are the most common pellets currently on the market) must have an ash content of less than 1 percent, whereas “standard” pellets may have as much as 2 percent ash. All pellets should have chloride levels of less than 300 parts per million and no more than 0.5 percent of fines (dust).
Many biomass feedstocks have a higher ash content than the standard allows. In addition, some grasses and other materials generate ash that tends to form clumps and deposits at high temperatures. Because of this, most wood pellet stoves are not suitable for burning fuel pellets made from materials other than wood. Instead, “biomass pellet” stoves, which are designed especially for those fuels, should be used.
What are the advantages of wood pellets over wood chips or other forms of wood as heating fuel ? Wood pellets can be produced to very uniform specifications – typically short pellets of 6mm-
10mm in diameter, very similar to animal feed. These pellets can be produced to a much greater density than wood chip, and therefore take up less space. The moisture content of pellet fuel is lower and more uniform, and it produces more heat per unit of weight, making it a more efficient fuel. It also burns cleaner, and takes less space to store, about four to five times less than that of woodchips for example. Their uniformity of size and their ability to flow makes wood pellets ideally suited to automated machines.
9 Wood Chips
ADVANTAGES vs. LOGS
Although logs can be stored and transported conveniently when stacked, and the ease of air passage through a log pile allows good drying, they may not always be the most convenient form for automated handling and feeding. Also, the relatively small surface area to volume ratio is not ideal for efficient combustion or gasification. Wood chips can form a much more uniform fuel that can flow and can be fed to a boiler, gasifier or other conversion system as a steady flow using an auger feed or a conveyor. can also be burned very efficiently.
With a large surface area to volume ratio they
USING IN ENERGY APPLICATIONS CHARACTERISTICS
Wood chips may have a bulk energy density of about 50% of that of the solid wood. Wood chips for energy applications should meet an appropriate quality standard if they are to be used reliably in combustion equipment, especially small scale and domestic equipment. Physical parameters, such as maximum size and absence of slivers or fines (sawdust), and maximum moisture content are important to allow reliable operation and prevent feed blockages. Also levels of contaminants and ash content will have an impact on emissions and maintenance schedules. The upcoming European standard for solid biomass, including wood chips, is being drasted by CEN/TC 335 that allows all of these parameters, and acceptable ranges, to be defined.
The characteristics of wood chips will depend both on the chipper and the material from which they are made. They can be divided into groups:
Forest chips - including: Log chips - from delimbed stem wood
Whole tree chips - from all the above-ground biomass of a tree
Logging residue chips - from brances, brash, etc
Stump chips - from stumps
Wood residue chips - from untreated wood residues, recycled wood and off-cuts
Sawing residue chips - from sawmill residues
Short rotation coppice / short rotation forestry chips - from the respective energy crops.

The Multiauto series boilers can be fired with wood pellets and with solid fuel (wood logs). In addition to wood pellet or wood chips fuel modality, there is the availability to add solid fuel (wood logs) whenever the heat demand is insufficient to sustain the required water temperature. This “mini-plant” is controlled by a digital regulator and draught regulator. The pellet tank is an integral part of the plant and it is filled up from its upper side, according to need. With pellet firing, there is a possible fuel cost saving of up to 40%, compared with the oil feeding system.

decrease the radiator temperature to compensate. This pro-active mechanism means that people inside the building won't even notice that the temperature has changed outside. For example, when the outside temperature drops at night, more heat is lost through the walls of the building. Because the outdoor sensor detects the fall as soon as it happens, the boiler is able to raise the radiator temperature and keep the inside temperature stable.

With a conventional system, the temperature is dependent on a room thermostat, which will only take effect aster the inside of the building has become too hot or too cold. In summary, weather compensation controls enable the boiler to respond to outside temperature changes and adjust the radiator output, to maintain a constant temperature indoors. According to the outdoor temperature and user demand, the fuzzy PID control technology and climate compensation technology are adopted to adjust the boiler heat power output through controlling the boiler water temperature. Advanced power quality control technology is adopted to eliminate harmonic pollution of boiler room distribution system. This technology has achieved the purpose of saving electricity and heating energy, improving the power quality. Practice shows that the energy saving technology has relatively remarkable energy saving effect.
