Welcome to the Mississippi Water Environment Association 61st Annual Confer-ence in Historic Vicksburg, MS. For those of you that are not history buffs the siege of Vicksburg and Gettysburg were the two most strategic battles of Civil War.
A THANK YOU is extended to our Sponsors, Supporters, Board members both past and present, Committee Chairpersons, Members, Associate members and Volun-teers who have contributed to the success we enjoy today.
Since 1957 MWEA (formally called Mississippi Sewage and Industrial Waste and later the Mississippi Water Pollution Control Association) a volunteer technical organization has provided education and training to its members who have protected the public health and the State's environment. Like WEF, MWEA has provided water quality professionals throughout the State of Mississippi with the latest in water quality education and training.
As one of the oldest of the baby boomer generation, I must admit that during the 1960's I did not give a lot of thought to my career since I was preparing to go to Vietnam. Thankfully, God spared me from that experi-ence and then I decided I wanted to make the world somehow better than it was. I chose to study engineer-ing, more specifically, sanitation or environmental engineering. I soon realized that I could not understand many of the articles written in the old WPCA Journals.
After attending graduate school, I still could not understand all of the articles, but somehow had a greater apprecia-tion for most of them. It did not take long in the role as a design engineer to know that water/wastewater operators were one of the most important members of the design team. I have spent nearly 50 years in the industry and I am so honored to be associated with such a wonderful group of professional individuals.
This may well be our last annual conference in Vicksburg and I look forward to our meeting in Mobile as we join with the Alabama/Mississippi Section of AWWA and AWEA for the first Joint Annual Meeting (J.A.M.) in July 2019. However, MWEA will continue our own organization and never forgetting our mission to provide education and training to our members in Mississippi. We plan to continue technical conferences in the future, some of which will be here in Vicksburg.
We invite your thoughts and suggestions on how we can make the conference and MWEA more meaningful for you. Please contact me or any of our Board members to share your thoughts.
Sincerely,
Steven H. (Steve) Bigelow, P.E. President MWEA

The Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) is the world's most prestigious youth award for a water-related science project. The prize taps into the unlimited potential of today's high school students as they seek to address current and future water challenges.
The Water Environment Federation (WEF) has coordinated the U.S. competition since its inception in 1997, and partners closely with their Member Association (MA) to execute the program.
2018 SJWP National Competition
Date & Location: June 15-16, 2018 University of North Carolina at Charlotte Cone University Center Charlotte, North Carolina
The 2018 Mississippi winner is Miss Helen Peng. Helen is a junior at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Sci-
ence. She is a native of Starkville, MS and plans to study Civil Engineering with special emphasis on sustainable de-
signs. When not researching, studying for classwork, or participating in her school’s various clubs, you can find Peng
painting or writing in a local studio or coffeeshop.
ABSTRACT
Optimal Photo-reactors for the Improvement of Solar Water Disinfection with the Advanced Oxidation Process
Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) is an inexpensive and effective method for disinfecting water using cost-effective mate-
rials like PET bottles and sunlight. Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) is widely implemented with the addition of photo-
catalyst TiO2 in SODIS. However, real world factors, such as turbid water sources, have not been considered in past
research. To model turbid water sources, kaolinite clay was added to the water models, and samples were exposed to
light in a sunlight simulator for the control's half-life time. The results showed that clay had a significant negative effect
on microbial disinfection for TiO2-suspension SODIS-AOP test cases while having only a modest effect on TiO2-coating
SODIS-AOP test cases as well as the SODIS method. In addition, because SODIS-AOP relies on sunlight for both direct
and catalytic disinfection, an optimal photo-reactor was designed to maximize the efficiency of SODIS and SODIS-AOP.
Computational model was designed using computational modeling. Various photoreactors were tested using this simula-
tion. Once the Trombe-Meinel Cusp was determined as the optimal photo-reactor, it was built using mylar wood, and
adhesive. This reactor was put to the test in real sunlight and disinfection was measured by the absorbance of samples
due to dyedegradation. Water was placed in PET plastic water bottles a thin TiO2-coated film along the inside surface of
the bottle so that the added efficiency of the TM cusp could be compared. These results showed that addition of the opti-
mal photo reactor to SODIS quadrupled the efficiency of SODIS-AOP and doubled the efficiency of SODIS. Overall, the
addition of an optimal photoreactor and practical TiO2 coatings dramatically increases the efficiency of the disinfection of
SODIS by over 200%.
