Bob Martin, Senior Pastor
Welcome from Pastor Bob
Welcome to St. Paul United Methodist Church! Whether you’re
a long-time member or a first time guest, I'm glad you're
worshipping with us during our "Disciple" series. We're focusing
on the specific ways our hearts, hands, minds, and more are
transformed by God when we act as his disciple. Being a
disciple is more than just saying we are; the proof is found in
what we do!
If you would like to know more about St. Paul, our ministries,
and our mission to Glorify God, Grow in Faith, and Give in Love,
I invite you to visit the Connection Center at the side of our
sanctuary lobby, to look through this bulletin and to visit our
website at stpaulumc.org. I hope you'll get involved in our Back
to School Jubilee this Saturday. We can always use more
volunteers!
I'm so excited about what the Lord is doing here at St. Paul, and
so grateful to have each of you be a part of it.

10:30 Contemporary Worship Snapshot
A typical contemporary worship at St.
Paul lasts about an hour. Our wor-
ship is filled with current Christian
music from our praise band. You are
invited to sing along with the words
on the screens, or simply enjoy the
music. Our scripture and message
are the same theme as the 9 a.m.
worship. You’ll notice every week
there’s time in our service to give fi-
nancially. While this is something
we’re called to do in scripture, it’s
also just our way of saying, “We love
and support our church!”

What is a Stephen Minister? Stephen Ministers are sometimes called
the “after people." What does that
mean? One way to put it is that Stephen
Ministers are there:
After the funeral, when everyone has left and the
emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in.
After the doctor says, “I’m sorry but there’s noth-
ing more we can do for you.
After the nursing home director says, “Welcome
to your new home!”
After the last child waves and drives away…and
the house suddenly seems empty.
After the handcuffs go on and your loved one is
led away.
After you find a pink slip with your final paycheck
After you are left alone and it feels like no one
cares.
Stephen Ministers are ready to come alongside you
and provide comfort and support for as long "after"
as needed.
Do want to be one of the “after people?” Have you
experienced tough situations? Can you empathize
and share? If you want to become a Stephen Minister,
call the church office or visit the Stephen Ministry table in
the courtyard next Sunday or August 23. Stephen Ministers
will be available to answer questions.

Sunday Night Youth Group
TONIGHT: WITH HONOR Bottom Line: When it comes to authority, it’s not
about them. It’s about Him. Nothing is worse than
having someone in charge who really shouldn’t be in
charge. Whether it’s the boss who is unfair or the
teacher who seems clueless, there’s nothing fun
about following someone you feel should never have
been the leader in the first place. Most of the time we
feel powerless. What can we do about it? Before he
was king, David found himself in a similar situation.
Under the authority of a crazy man who kept trying to
kill him, it seemed David had every right to fight back
against the person in charge. But what he did in-
stead—and why he did it—can be a game changer
when it comes to dealing with authority in our lives.
Join the middle and high school youth on Sunday
nights from 5:30—8 p.m. for group games, exciting
crowd breakers, passionate worship, biblical teach-
ing, and a chance to connect with others through
Source Groups. The group meets in the Mariposa Ca-
fé at 5:30 p.m., then branches out to the Youth
Room, the Gym or the Fellowship Hall depending on
plans for the night. Dinner is $4.
Teen Tidal Wave This Tuesday, August 11 | 7:30 p.m. | $5
On Tuesday, Aug. 11 students will attend Highland
Aquatic Center's Teen Tidal Wave Finale. Join us for a
fun event with a DJ, games, prizes, Guitar Hero on a
huge screen, and lots of swimming. The cost is $5 and
we'll meet at 7:30 p.m. Students should wear their
suit, bring a towel and a change of clothes. Pick up will
be at 10:30 p.m.
Back to School Bash Friday, Aug. 21 | 6 p.m. We'll meet at 6 p.m. for a Hands On Worship Experi-
ence. This includes a time of praise and prayer over
the upcoming school year. Prayer stations will be avail-
able to students.
After worship, students will work in teams for a city
wide photo Scavenger Hunt. Students will pile into
cars with a challenge sheet and each team will have
two hours to complete as many of the tasks on their
challenge sheet as possible. Prizes will be awarded!
If you plan to attend you must register online for the
event by Tuesday, August 18.
Visit stpaulumc.org to register.
Attention Parents! We are in need of parent drivers for the Scavenger
Hunt. Contact Youth Ministry Director, Alison Van Duy-
ne at [email protected] by August 18 if you can

Construction Update
This past week has been impacted by the heavy, non-stop rain. As of the writing of this article, we have a few leaks around campus. In some areas water is entering the building through cracks in the brick exterior where chinking is failing. Much of our exterior is in need of brick work to assure no leakage. We can't move for-ward on exterior painting nor sealing of external walls until the bricks have a chance to dry. That will be an ongoing project. In the Christian Life Enrichment Center, wrapping of pipes continues as well as checking of a/c units in some areas that are not served by the chiller system. This is a result of the building being finished in phases as it was built. The chiller system was drained last Friday and new fresh liquid put back into the system, sporadi-cally cooling the building through adjustments. Welding on-site has been hindered by the driving rain so our chiller yard is still a work in progress as it is being re-paired and necessary replacement units installed. One of the ways we can help maintain the proper tempera-ture in all buildings is keeping the entrances closed. No word yet on the walkway outside the CLEC. Windows for the Children's Building are due to be deliv-ered this week, and we are planning to change them out next week weather permitting. Despite new roofing, the torrential rains are identifying additional areas that may need to be investigated as leaks occur. Our contractor is working on thoughts and ideas for how we can correct the issues. We are getting there. Thank you again for all your prayers; keep them coming.
No Parking In Front of CLEC The County is doing work all along Highland Avenue
to improve drainage in this area. They are restoring
the right of way area directly on both sides of the
street. Sod is being laid so water can perk into the
ground better and the pitch of the road edge is be-
ing changed to direct water to drains so it can flow
out to Allen’s Creek. Effective immediately, parking
along Highland in front of the Christian Life Enrich-
ment Center is no longer permitted. This is a perma-
nent change made by the city. Thank you for your co-
operation in finding other parking spots.

Vacation Bible School Shares God's Love with Families Our Vacation Bible School was a big success! This year we welcomed families to
our "Minion Factory" in the Christian Life Enrichment Center for dinner, upbeat
songs, dancing, games, activities and crafts. Each night our "Minion Trainer,"
played by Pastor Bob, offered a biblical message and used our time machine to
bring an important person from the Bible in to tell their story! On Wednesday, we
had our biggest crowd as Handicapable was able to join in on the fun.
Thanks to all our volunteers for strapping on their hard hats and helping out!
Special thanks to our youth, who helped to lead worship, games and more!
