WELCOME

Welcome to BA (Hons) Photography.

In this guide you will find the information you need to help you settle in to your studies at UCA Rochester this September.

You are joining a course which has a prestigious

history in preparing students to meet the challenges of creative photography.

The course benefits from numerous facilities, including access to two large photographic studios which house digital workstations, film processing, printing (colour and black & white darkrooms), digital postproduction equipment, flash and continuous lighting, HD video and digital and analogue cameras.

In your first year with us, you will learn about the genres of photography and photographic visual language, creative concept development, research and the production of final solutions, practice digital and analogue photography, studio and location shoots, and lighting and postproduction skills.

Whilst the main introduction to the course will take place during the first week of the term, there are some details you will need in advance, which are outlined in this Welcome Guide.

During the induction week we will introduce you to the various resources of the university including the studios, library, computers and workshops.

You will meet fellow students and the academic and technical staff. We will provide you with an overview to the course and your first creative projects. It is very important that you do not miss any of the activities during this week.

We wish you a good summer and look forward to meeting you in September!

Best regards,

Heike LöwensteinCourse Leader

STUDENT PROFILE

“Within hours of joining UCA, I became part of a team designing, styling and photographing our own fashion shoot. Despite having no fashion background or any inclination towards it after our shoot was finished and images mastered the experience had expanded my perception. This shows that at UCA you can adapt your creativity and individuality to any genre.”

COMPUTERS

The university has computing resource, which you will be able to access throughout your time at UCA. However, if you are considering purchasing a computer, our industry primarily works with Apple Macintosh computers. In this instance Apple MacBook Pro laptops are used extensively for field-work.

We would advise that you delay any purchase until you are enrolled. Once you are registered as a current student you will then be entitled to further discounts. Staff will be able to give more detailed advice at the beginning of term if you are unsure about what to buy.

The course currently uses the following core software:

-Adobe Creative Suite CC: Photoshop Extended, InDesign, Bridge-Apple Final Cut Pro-Adobe Lightroom 4-Hasselblad Phocus-Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

STORAGEThough photography has a ‘network’ shared folder, students are advised to take responsibility for the safe storage of their work.

In order to do this you will need to download, store and transport relevant course work. Students should purchase a ‘USB Memory stick (8Gb+)’ and an ‘External USB’ or Thunderbolt Hard Drive’ (1TB or above).

These can be purchased from any electronics or computing outlet.

PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS

Within the department, students have access to the photography stores. The facility not only acts as a centre for renting specialist photographic equipment (at no charge), it also has a small shop for students to purchase essential photographic materials.

We recommend that students joining the program set aside at least £200 for the purchase of Colour and B&W film, paper and printing materials for analogue processes per year. Staff will advise you of the specific accessories, film and photographic paper that you will need for your initial projects.
