WELCOME

We are delighted that you have chosen to study with us and warmly welcome you to UCA at Rochester. The course that you have enrolled onto is part of the School of Crafts and Design, which includes Contemporary Jewellery, and Silversmithing, Goldsmithing & Jewellery at Rochester.

You will be encouraged to explore and develop some innovative answers to design as you work with like-minded students and enthusiastic and experienced staff who share a common passion for creating work of a high standard.

Our creative culture and discourse is something that we strongly believe in, and we consider our working environment to be very important to providing positive conditions that will encourage, motivate and assist you in the process of designing and making.

We want you to be successful and innovative designers throughout your degree and in your subsequent career in the creative industries.

We encourage you to use the wide range of expertise, facilities and resources that are available to you across

our subject areas. Learning from others can also be a powerful tool and you should help your fellow students and yourself to learn as much as you can over the three years at Rochester.

You will find the course staff to be extremely approachable and helpful in support of your learning, but ultimately it’s your own personal ambition and determination that will decide how well you will progress and develop with your studies. A cohesive and collective team effort can provide a handsome return for those who seek it, and we encourage all of you to achieve the very best results that you are capable of.

We look forward to working with you, guiding and helping you over your time with us.

Kind regards,

Debra AllmanCourse Leader

Course costs vary for each student depending on how they develop their projects and the types of materials and processes they choose to work with. We attempt to keep costs as low as possible in the first year. As students pursue their own areas of interest in second and third year, their costs will increase.

Costs based on current student experience:

-First Year – Up to £300 (excluding toolbox)-Second Year – Up to £700-Third Year - Up to £1,000

Please remember that this is an approximation. The above figures include materials and extra equipment you might need to purchase, as well as printing and other processes you might need to use. It does not include the costs of trips.

COURSE COSTS FOR 2015/16

There are some other costs associated with the course that students will need to take into consideration:

Daniella Howard, Silversmithing, Goldsmithing & Jewellery, UCA Rochester

Study and field trips are organised and conducted over the academic year, both in the UK and in Europe. This element of your education is considered to be essential and participation is seen as highly beneficial. A field trip to a European cultural centre is an integral part of the course for all first year students.

This year we will be travelling to Munich in March 2016 to visit Schmuck, the international jewellery event for contemporary jewellery. Details will be confirmed on your arrival in September.

The cost is likely to approximately £380.00 per person (total cost will be confirmed after we have received quotes and is dependent on numbers of students travelling). The full amount will be required soon after the beginning of term.

There will also be additional day trips to see exhibitions/museums in London.
