Welcome in Jesus’ Name!

Alive in Christ to share life in Christ

Welcome to Faith Lutheran Church! It is an honor and a privilege for us to have you here and to serve you with the Word of God. We pray that our time together may build each of us up in faith in Jesus Christ and encourage us in our service to Him in our lives.

In this bulletin you will find the order of worship we will use today. There is also an insert with more details about the service and announcements. Please take the insert home with you and leave this bulletin here to be used again.

We are thrilled to have your little ones in church; Jesus Himself said “Let the little children come to me.” We understand that those little ones can become unruly. If you find it necessary to step out momentarily, you can follow the service on the TV in the fellowship hall.

I thank You, my Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger. Keep me this day also, from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. Into Your hands I commend my body and soul and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen!

Luther’s Morning Prayer

A Note to Our Visitors Concerning the Lord’s Supper Today our church will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper. The Bible tells us that this meal is a precious medicine for the soul where we receive Jesus’ actual body and blood. While medicine can be beneficial if administered correctly, it can also be quite dangerous. The same is true of the Lord’s Supper. It offers forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. However, the Bible says, “whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.” For this reason we request that if you are not a member of this church, you speak with the pastor before joining us in the Lord’s Supper. We thank you for respecting our practice.

Page 3: Welcome in Jesus’ Name!

Ⓠ: What does God tell me about myself in His holy Word?

Ⓐ: He says that I am a sinner and deserve only His punishment.

Ⓠ: What should I do if I am not aware of my sins or am not troubled by them?

Ⓐ: I should examine myself according to the Ten Commandments and ask how well I have carried out my responsibilities as a husband or wife or single person, as a parent or child, an employer or employee, a teacher or student. Have I loved God with all my heart, gladly heard His Word and patiently endured affliction? Have I been disobedient, proud or unforgiving? Have I been selfish, lazy, envious or quarrelsome? Have I lied or deceived, taken something not mine or given anyone a bad name? Have I abused my body or permitted indecent thoughts to linger in my mind? Have I failed to do what is right and good?

Ⓠ: When I realize that I have sinned against God and deserve His punishment, what should I do?

Ⓐ: I will confess before God all my sins, those which I remember as well as those of which I am unaware. I will pray to God for His mercy and forgiveness.

Ⓠ: How do I receive His gracious forgiveness?

Ⓐ: His Word assures me that Jesus led a pure and holy life for me and died on the cross for me to pay the full price for all my sins. Through faith in Jesus, I have been clothed in my Savior’s perfect righteousness and holiness.

Ⓠ: What further assurance do I have that Jesus is mine and I am His?

Ⓐ: In Holy Communion, He gives me His body and blood together with the bread and wine as a truly life-giving food and drink to unite me with Him and my fellow believers. By means of this sacrament, Jesus not only forgives my sins but sweeps away all my doubts about His love for me, gives me His Own strength to live a God-pleasing life and grants me a joyful foretaste of Heaven.

Ⓠ: How can I be sure that I receive all these blessings in the Lord’s Supper?

Ⓐ: I have His Own words spoken as His last will and testament on the night before He died. There He tells me: “Take and eat; this is My body. Drink from it, all of you; this is My blood which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins.”

Ⓠ: How will I respond to this priceless gift from Jesus?

Ⓐ: I will daily thank and praise Him for His love to me. With His help, I will fight temptation, do my best to correct whatever wrongs I have done and serve Him and those around me with love and good works.

The Offering One way that the members of Faith worship God is by giving generous monetary offerings to thank Him for His many blessings. If you are visiting and would like to participate in the offering, feel free to do so. But please do not feel that you are obligated to contribute; you are our guest. We thank you for the opportunity to share God’s Word with you!

The Confession of Faith The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

Maker of Heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, He came down from Heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures. He ascended into Heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped

and glorified, Who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen!

The Prayer of the Church

The pastor offers the prayers and petitions of the congregation to the Lord. United with the whole Christian Church on earth, we ask God for the many blessings that He has promised to His people.

Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done

on earth as in Heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are Yours

now and forever. Amen!

The Lord’s Prayer

℗ The Lord be with you.

© And also with you.

℗ Lift up your hearts.

© We lift them up to the Lord.

℗ Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

© It is good and right so to do.

℗ It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give You thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord,

The pastor speaks the proper preface.

Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of Heaven, we praise Your holy name and join their glorious song:

The Sacrament

7

The Prayer of Thanksgiving

℗ Blessed are You, O Lord of Heaven and earth. We praise and thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which He has ransomed us from sin, death and the devil’s power.

By His incarnation, He became one with us. By His perfect life, He fulfilled Your holy will. By His innocent death, He overcame hell. By His rising from the grave, He opened Heaven.

Invited by Your grace and instructed by Your Word, we approach Your table with repentant and joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ’s body and blood and preserve us in the true faith until we feast with Him and all His ransomed people in glory everlasting.

© Amen!

Holy, Holy, Holy Sanctus O holy, holy, holy

Lord God of pow’r and might, Your glory, earth and Heaven In countless ways recite. Hosanna! Come and save us, Lord God of hosts on high, And in Your grace and mercy Receive our fervent cry!

Hosanna in the highest!

How truly blest is He Who in God’s name is coming To set His people free! He comes to bring salvation And with His blood outpoured, Deliver us from bondage— Hosanna, mighty Lord!

The Words of Institution

℗ Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night He was betrayed, took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it, gave it to His disciples and said, “Take and eat; this is My body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”

℗ In the same way after supper, He took the cup, gave thanks, gave it to them and said, “Drink from it all of you; this cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

℗ The peace of the Lord be with you always.

The Song of Simeon Nunc Dimittis

O Lord, now let Your servant Depart in peace, assured: For I have seen Your promised Incarnate, saving Word— A Light that will enlighten All gloom where Gentiles dwell; The brilliant, crowning glory Of those in Israel!

All glory to the Father, All glory to the Son, All glory to the Spirit, Forever three in one; For as in the beginning, Is now, shall ever be, God’s Triune Name resounding Through all eternity!

We invite the confirmed members of Faith Lutheran Church or another congregation in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod to the Lord’s Supper. If you are not a member, we ask that you would speak with the pastor before receiving communion. He would like to explain what the Bible teaches concerning the Sacrament of Holy Communion. During the Distribution, one or more hymns may be sung as announced by the pastor.

The Distribution

℗ We give You thanks, O Lord, for the foretaste of the Heavenly banquet that You have given us to eat and to drink in this sacrament. Through this gift You have fed our faith, nourished our hope and strengthened our love. By Your Spirit help us to live as Your holy people until that day when You will receive us as Your guests at the wedding supper of the Lamb, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

© Amen!

The Closing Hymn

Divine Service II. “Glory Be to God” Text: © 2006 Stephen P. Starke. “General Verse” Music: © 2005 Dale Witte. “Holy, Holy, Holy” Text: © 2006 Stephen P. Starke. “Lamb of God” Music: © 2005 Dale Witte. “Song of Simeon” Text: © 2006 Stephen P. Starke.

Kyrie “Kyrie” is the Greek word for Lord. The expression, “Kyrie, eleison,” Lord, have mercy, is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian church. Gloria in Excelsis This Latin phrase means, “Glory to God in the highest.” Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things He has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. This phrase has been used in worship since the 4th century. The Nicene Creed Public confession is faith’s response to God’s saving Word. Christians composed the Nicene Creed in the fourth century to defend the Bible’s teachings that both Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are true God, equal to the Father in one eternal undivided Trinity. Sanctus “Sanctus” means “holy” in Latin. This song, which echoes Isaiah 6:3, has been used since the second century by the early Christian church. Agnus Dei Jesus is God’s Lamb (Agnus Dei), Who was offered as a sacrifice for sin once for all. This song is reminiscent of the words of John the Baptist in John 1:29. Nunc Dimittus This song, which means, “Now dismiss” is also known as “The Song of Simeon.” Through God’s Word and Sacrament we have seen Jesus Christ and, like Simeon, we find divine peace and comfort through faith in the Savior.

Thank You, Heavenly Father, for nourishing me with the life-giving body and blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. I boldly ask that You send Your Holy Spirit into my heart and into my life so that I may obtain and eternally enjoy Your divine grace, the forgiveness of my sins, unity with Christ and eternal life by faith in Him. Grant this to me for Jesus’ sake. Amen!

Prayer before Communion

Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation I come to Your table to eat and drink Your precious body and blood. I come boldly, Lord Jesus, trusting in Your promises that You will forgive me all my sins, keep me in the true faith and grant me eternal life. Amen!

Prayer after Worship

Merciful Lord, grant that we who have heard Your Word may believe it in our hearts and practice it in our lives; that we who have worshiped You in Your church may be Your witnesses in the world; that we, who have sung Your praises on earth may be partakers of Your Heavenly glory; that we who have received Your Sacrament may be and remain united to You and one another today and for eternity through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!
