COLORADO PERINATAL CARE QUALITY COLLABORATIVE

DECEMBER 2017NEWSLETTER

WELCOME JAIME CABRERA, MPHJaime is the new Executive Director for CPCQC and we are so excited to have her join the team. Jaime starts her new position next month and will introduce herself in the January newsletter.

The CDC State-based Perinatal Quality Collaborative: 2017 PQC Kick-off Meeting

Executive Committee Members Dr. Torri Metz and Dr. Meghan Donnelly, along with Shivani Mehta Bhatia, Maternal Child Coordinator for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, had the privilege of flying to Atlanta in November to represent Colorado at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention State-Based Perinatal Quality Collaboratives Awardee Meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to collaborate and learn from the 12 other state collaboratives who received awards, as well as to learn some of the logistics of the grant award. Each state collaborative gave a short presentation on their current work, allowing states to learn from the experiences and challenges each group has had as they bring quality improvement science initiatives to hospitals across their states.

In addition to encouraging states to “steal shamelessly and share seamlessly” with each other, the state collaboratives were also encouraged to consider health equity and disparities in the efforts they undertake in the future. Dr. Elizabeth Howell, Vice Chair of Research at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, gave an inspiring key note address on quality of care and racial and ethnic disparities in maternal and child health. Her research has demonstrated shocking variation in severe maternal morbidity among hospitals in New York City, and that higher rates of severe maternal

morbidity in black and Hispanic women can be partially explained by delivering in hospitals

that provide less safe care.

The Colorado representatives left the conference having made several important networking connections with leaders of Perinatal Quality Collaboratives from other states, and with important insight on the value of rapid response data and shared learning amongst the hospitals participating in each project. Most importantly, the cooperation and shared learning amongst the states will continue with monthly conferences call facilitated by the CDC State-Based PQC Project Officer and through an online collaborative gateway, CDC JOIN.
