SEPTEMBER 3, 2017 22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
G reetings and I hope you
are having a blessed
Sunday! My name is James
Bogdan, typically called Jim, and
I will be taking John Pratt’s
position as Director of Faith
Formation. It is exciting and
invigorating to be joining your
parish community and to have the
opportunity to share the beauty of
our faith. In order to better intro-
duce myself, please allow me a
moment to discuss my past.
I am the fourth of six children
and grew up in Ann Arbor
attending Huron Valley Catholic
School and Father Gabriel Richard
High School. Christ the King was
my home parish and I deeply
appreciated the youth group and
ministry activities the parish
provided. At the age of eighteen
I moved to Dallas, Texas to attend
the small Catholic University of
Dallas. After completing their core
curriculum, reading and discuss-
ing too much philosophy, and
studying in Rome for a semester,
I received a Bachelor of Arts in
Philosophy. Those years were
profoundly forming for me as
I gained a great appreciation for
the universality and history of the
Catholic Church and the great
intellectual tradition of the
Western World, the legacy of
which we enjoy to this day.
Prior to graduation I enrolled in
the Master of Arts in Theology
program and received a position in
the Student Affairs office of the
university. I continued to study
the great works of theology and
help form the hall communities
through training, teaching, and
monitoring the Resident Assis-
tants. Through the Lord’s will and
my response to His Word, I came
under the spiritual direction of the
Cistercian monks at the Abby of
Our Lady of Dallas. A strong
desire for the truth, the concept of
a God, and the fact that I am not
He became instilled in me by their
tutelage and the community of the
university.
I married my high school best
friend, Elise Gainer, and after
moving her to Dallas for a short
time, she was offered her dream
job as a youth librarian here in
Ann Arbor. We moved back and
I began writing my Master’s thesis
on ecclesiology and the Trinity.
After she graciously and generous-
ly supported me in my studies for
many months, the Lord put in me
a greater desire to apply my faith
and provided an occasion to do so
here at Old St. Pat’s.
I enjoy playing hockey, board
games, trivia, and computer
games. My music tastes range over
almost all genres, though my
favorite is Folk, and I am fond of
ballroom dancing. I follow the
development of technology and
software closely and am always
open to philosophical discussions,
athletic competitions, and service.
Please feel free to stop by my
office to chat, share a joke, or
discuss our faith. I am here to be
His servant, teach with the
wonderful catechists and deacons
of this parish, and learn from you
and your children.
~Jim

Invite Someone you Know to Join RCIA
Do you know someone who would like to know more about the Catholic faith? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a program for people who would like to know more about the Roman Catholic faith. RCIA is open to anyone, Christian or non-Christian, who genuinely seeks to explore the possibility of joining the Catholic Christian faith community. RCIA is the process by which interested people learn about, participate
in, and eventually become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. We will be starting RCIA this fall, we encourage you to reach out to your neighbors, family members and friends and invite them to join RCIA. For more information contact our new Director of Religious Education, James Bogdan, with questions at 734-662-8141 ext. 30 or email him at [email protected].
Congratulations Gary!
Last Tuesday evening, Gary Perrydore was instituted by Bishop Emeritus Mengeling into the ministry of Lector. Remember to keep Gary and his family in your prayers as he continues on his journey to the Diaconate.
Report from Deacon Day in Flint
At one point in the Book of Kings David gets in trouble for trying to do a census. Last Saturday at the Deacon Day at St. Mary's in Flint we never had time to consider a census. There were too many of God's poor to serve. Some folks estimated that we served between 1,000 and 1,500 people. I know we ran out of food and then bought more food and ran out again but only after the last of the clients were served. We gave away all the backpacks (600 or 800 backpacks!) and much of the school supplies. Two things we did not run out of were hope or faith. We were there to pray for healing for those who live in difficult situations. Thank you for your generous contributions and for your time if you were able to come. Last year was the first of these days and it was successful but this year we reached many more people. I hope you can join us next year. God bless and thank you for your generosity.
