List some ways you are thankful for being independent? If you were asked to define independence, what would you say…liberation from restraint, not being subject to control by others, or not relying on others. Freedom similarly can be the power to do what-you-want when-you-want. Are we really ever free? Discuss. If I could inject my opinion, I’d say all creatures are ultimately confined to some being and/or principles. True freedom, then, is not found fully in independence or freedom from ________(fill in the blank), but rather a freedom to Christ. Read Galatians 5:1, 5:6, 5:13. Paul is advocating that neither the right- wing circumcision or left-wing un-circumcision crowds have any platform before the throne of grace, instead, only faith working through love. For freedom’s sake Christ set us free. We were called to freedom. Luther said, “Faith… is a divine work in us which changes us and makes us to born anew of God… O it is a living, busy, active, might thing, this faith. It is impossible for it not to be doing good incessantly.” So how do you use this freedom? Paul then compares/contrasts the life of the “enslaved flesh” (v16-21) versus the “freed life” in the Spirit (v22-26). How are you doing? In what practical ways does being bonded with the Spirit look like in our daily lives? If you were asked to define independence, what would you say…liberation from restraint, not being subject to control by others, or not relying on others. NEWS AND EVENTSLORD’S SUPPER We’re thankful that The Lord has brought you to worship today. Since we are participating in the Lord’s Supper or Holy Communion today, before you come forward you should consider these questions and be able to give an affirmative answer to each:

1) Are you a baptized believer in Jesus? (Acts 2:38,39)2) Do you understand you are a sinner and in need of God’s forgiveness? (Romans 7:24,25a)3) Do you desire His forgiveness and intend to amend your life by the power of His Holy Spirit? (Romans 6:1-4)4) Do you believe that the Body and Blood of Jesus are present with the bread and the wine for the forgiveness of your sins? (1Corinthians 10:16)

WEEK OF JULY 8 - LET’S SEND A WORK TEAMLet’s go to Neighborhood House Association, even for just a few hours on any morning or afternoon, starting July 8, to share the love of Jesus. Volunteers are needed to do outdoor work to help beautify their building. Neighborhood House will be removing shrubs and other plants and replacing them with new ones. This is a great opportunity for teams of two or groups to share the love of Christ in a practical way. If you can plant a shrub, smile, and say “Jesus loves you,” please contact Jeff Shoumaker at 691-2333 ext. 14.

PRO LIFE EFFORTWe are looking for someone to organize a pro-life effort for the Forty Days for Life vigil. The pro-life community of believers are coming together to pray, and this will entail getting volunteers to take a one hour shift to pray in front of the abortion clinic. These have been held all around the country, and the result has been lives are being changed and lives saved. If you would like to take up this effort, please let me know and I will put you in touch with the coordinator. Call Phyllis at 693-9214 in the Care Ministry office.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - REDEEMER SUPPORT FOR 100TH HOUSE BUILDThe mission statement for Habitat for Humanity reads: “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.” Last week, Habitat’s Peoria chapter celebrated the ground breaking for its 100th local project to be built in East Peoria. As the “Growing Out” part of our our mission statement suggests, we are also excited to put God’s love into action here at Redeemer! Redeemer has been blessed and honored to be asked by Habitat to be the faith supporters for the recipient of this 100th home, Laura Beneventi. Laura works for the city and has two cute daughters: Isabella (7) and Laila (2).

Laura’s house build will begin in late July and is targeted for completion by Christmas. As the faith sponsoring church, we are asked to keep Laura, her family, and the volunteers in our prayers! We are also being asked to serve Laura and the project in various ways - the first of which is providing volunteers to help build her house! Redeemer plans to send a team of 10 volunteers on the last Saturday of every month starting in July until the project is finished. Would you be willing to help serve and pray with Laura and her family? Please contact Jeff Morris at 453-0400 or email at [email protected].

DOMAIf you’re interested in the LCMS response to the DOMA decision from the Supreme Court, please go to lcms.org.

HELP IDENTIFY MISSION ALLIANCE IN TRI COUNTY AREARedeemer is partnering with groups that will allow our members to introduce Christ to non-believers. We recognize Southside Mission and Habitat for Humanity, for example, for their ambition to engage in local mission. We would also like to consider additional alliances based on location which may encourage member participation. If you know of a potential mission alliance in Dunlap, East Peoria, Chillicothe, or Washington please contact Jeff Shoumaker at 691-2333 ext. 14.

FAMILY CHOIRParents and their children are invited to sing in the “Family Choir” on July 21 at the 8:15 a.m. service.
