This short-term Adult Sunday School class will begin next Sunday, October 19 and continue through November 9. The class will be based on the book The Company We Keep: 50 Years of Arkansans Creating Just Communities, written by our own Ruth Shepherd. In her book, Ruth tells the stories about mostly ordinary people who, because of their love for others, have been able to do extraordinary things. The common theme is the amazing capacity of human beings to care about others. Ruth will begin the class (October 19) by telling her story about her experience in meeting these people and writing the book. In the following weeks we will hear first-hand stories from some of the folks whose stories are documented in the book.

On All Saints’ Sunday we gather to give thanks to God for the saints of every time and place to whom we are joined in eternal fellowship, and for those who have been particularly important to us and who, having died, now live in the nearer presence of God. In this spirit we will read the names of those of our congregation who have died this past year.

When a loved one dies, one of the most common early reactions is an intense yearning, a sense that part of you is missing, and a hunger to have the person back. Sharing stories often provides solace and helps ease the heartbreak. Our church is providing a place to share those stories. Beginning in November, on the third Tuesday of every month, we will host a Faith and Grief Luncheon from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Second Hall. Participants will experience:

•a supportive community of persons who have experienced the death of a loved one. •comfort through scripture and prayers. •encouragement through personal stories. •hope in sharing your feelings and experiences.

Registration for the November 18 luncheon is open now. Please register at www.faithandgrief.org or by calling 469-251-9612.If you are interested in receiving more information about Faith and Grief Ministry, contact Karen Akin at [email protected].

Second Presbyterian Church always has a great team and we want you to walk with us this year. To sign up, go to www.arkansasjustcommunities.org and look for our church’s team. Walkers and Walk Teams from across Central Arkansas, representing families, businesses, civic and faith groups, and every walk of life come together to celebrate the rich diversity of our shared community and the uniqueness of each person in it. There's music, activities for the kids, food, and a whole lot of fun! And afterwards, head across President Clinton Avenue to REMIX at Stickyz from 5:00 - 7:00! Bring your karaoke skills, because we‘ve got great entertainment by DJ Showtime. Admission is $15 for two drink tickets and lots of fun to keep the community feeling going! Proceeds benefit JCA's many youth and community leadership programs, which ensure that every person is valued, every voice is heard and everyone has a fair chance to succeed. Come on out and be a part of this huge celebration of the rich diversity of our state! We will have a table in the narthex starting October 19. Please visit us there or contact our team leader, Susan Goldner, for more information.

After over 15 years of faithful service, Nancy Coleman is retiring as Administrative Associate at Second Presbyterian Church. Nancy is being recognized in the 11:00 worship service and a reception in her honor will follow in the Narthex. Please join us as we thank Nancy for the important role she has played in carrying out the ministry of Jesus Christ through the life of this congregation. Nancy started off as a part-time Children’s Ministry assistant in the mid 1990’s, became the Childcare Coordinator and then for the past 10 years has been an Administrative Associate working with Pastoral Care, Fellowship, Youth and Young Adults. While we will miss her gifts used in the church office, we are thankful that she will continue her membership and ministry in our church.

Join Us to Celebrate Nancy Coleman, Sunday, November 2

Thank You Family Promise Volunteers! Thanks to all of our Family Promise volunteers for a great week of hosting. First, a word of appreciation goes to Jeannie Ford and the kids of Bible Village for helping transform their space into a home. The families enjoyed the goodie bags you put together as well as the cookies and muffins. Our thanks also goes to our food providers: Jo Paulus, Ann Bridgers, Sarah Lindsey Harrison and the Young Adults, Jeanne Lloyd, Jan Lynch, Diedra Gaskella, Eileen Ellis, Marie and Ryan Holder, Jane Miers, Ken and Jane Carter, Joe and Mary Helen Henry, June and Eugene Jones, Melissa Hancock, Anne Brantley, Jane Blackall, and Jane Beachboard. We are also grateful to our overnight and weekend hosts: Rick and Ann Owen, Rob Owens, Matt Christenson, Bob and Diane Skinner, Linda Humphries, Jennifer Chilcoat, Lindy Vogado, and Melissa Hancock. Finally, we are grateful for the leadership of Clark and Michele Neumany who coordinated all of our volunteers, and Linda Humphries and Becky Farrow who welcomed our families each day. As you can see from the list of people above it takes a lot of volunteers to host the families each rotation. We are always looking for volunteers to help, and many hands help to make this week of hosting Family Promise a success. Please mark your calendars for our next rotation the weeks of January 4-11, April 5-12, July 5-12, and September 27- October 4.

Second Wind: Women in Community

Mark your calendar for, Sunday, December 7 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. for “Second Stories to Remember.” The Great Hall is the place to be to hear some Second storytellers, share some great conversation and munch on exceptional Second cookies. At the kickoff you said you wanted to meet other women in the church and have time for good conversation. This is the first of many opportunities to do just that. It will also be a great time to take a deep breath and prepare for the holiday season. No tickets required. Just come and enjoy time together. Watch your mail, email, Facebook, and bulletin inserts for more details.

The course begins and ends at Vera Lloyd's children's home in Monticello. Learn more and register at www.VLturkeytrot.com. Funds raised from the event support the Transitional Living Program, which helps young adults aging out of foster care reach employment and education goals and master independent living skills.

Don’t forget to FALL back an hour at 2:00 a.m. November 2!

Shepherd’s Hope Medical Clinic needs volunteers! Located on the campus of Oak Forest United Methodist Church, this clinic provides general medical care, dental care, vision care, and mental health services to those in need. There are many ways to volunteer with this local ministry, but the most pressing needs are for Spanish interpreters and physicians. If you would like more information and/or are able to help, please contact Kathy Ransom at 501-680-9446.

Special Thanks to Sharlie Rigby……and a Volunteer Opportunity!! For the past few years Sharlie Rigby has served as part of a “team” to help assemble the Children’s Worship Bulletin Clipboards. She has worked with Abby Considine, Susan Jones, and Nancy Russ to provide resources to help our children participate in our worship services. Sharlie has alternated every other month to prepare the clipboards for the 8:30 and 11:00 worship services. It is time for her to “retire” from this volunteer position. We thank Sharlie for sharing her time in this way and supporting the spiritual growth of our little ones. AND- we thank Abby, Susan, and Nancy for their continued dedication to this important service for our children! We now need one person to assemble bulletins each week, every other month. This is a “job” that can be done any time during the week and it takes only about 20-30 minutes. It involves cleaning out the used materials from the clipboards and assembling new bulletins, scratch paper, pencils, and crayons. All materials are supplied. If you have a few minutes each week and would like to join this “support team” in our ministry with children—please contact Jeannie Ford ([email protected], 227-0000).

Michael Ramsey & Jeffrey Foster joined by Reaffirmation of Faith.

Pat Renfro joined by Transfer of Letter from Grace Presbyterian Church in Plano, TX.

J.B. & Chesta Norton joined by transfer of letter from Community Presbyterian Church in Lake City, Colorado. They are former members of Second Presbyterian. They are the parents of member Marcy Doderer and grandparents to Katie & Emily Doderer.

The Fellowship Ministry is planning a trip to The Arkansas Repertory Theater (The Rep) on

Sunday, March 15 for a 2:00 p.m. performance of Mary Poppins.

We have reserved 60 tickets in the orchestra section. Adult tickets are $60 per person; student tickets (4 years old and above) are $30 per person. You may reserve tickets in advance in the church office. Tickets must be paid for at the time of reservation. Tickets for this performance would be a great Christmas gift! And it will be fun to join other members of our church family for this lively and moving production. With music and lyrics by the Academy Award-winning Sherman Brothers (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Jungle Book, Charlotte's Web, The Aristocats), with additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe (Peter Pan: A Musical Adventure) and a book by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey), Disney’s stage musical Mary Poppins is based on the similarly titled series of children's books by P. L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film. Including a score filled with timeless classics such as “Feed the Birds,” “Jolly Holiday,” “Step in Time,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and the Academy Award-winning “Chim-Chim Cher-ee,” the Broadway production opened in November 2006 and received nominations for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, six Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical and nine Olivier Award nominations. The Banks family live in a big house in London on Cherry Lane, and things are not going well. The children, Jane and Michael, are out of control and in need of a new nanny. While the children have their own ideas about what sort of caretaker they should have, their parents—and in particular Mr. Banks—prefer someone strict for the job. When a mysterious young woman named Mary Poppins appears on their doorstep, the family finds that she’s the answer to all their prayers. While Mary Poppins takes the children on many fantastic adventures, Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones she changes.

CHURCH LIGHTING An Interim Report

A Message from Bruce Blackall, Moderator, Property Ministry

For the past eighteen months the Property Ministry has been analyzing the numerous and sometimes very technical issues surrounding the subject of the providing of appropriate lighting facilities to the various areas within our church. The number of areas that currently are not sufficiently lighted are indicative of the fact that some sort of remedial action is necessary. Currently there are several areas of investigation that the Property Ministry has chosen to follow in determining a doable strategy to resolve this problem. The initial challenge has been to evaluate the current lighting system and attempt to identify both those facilities that have a continuing lighting capability through scheduled preventive maintenance and, conversely, those areas that are not currently doing a proper job, or no job at all, and will in all probability need to be replaced. In this regard, it should be noted that in the twenty-five plus years the current equipment has been in service many changes have occurred in lighting technology, including, but not limited to certain government mandates concerning performance standards for lighting equipment. In addition, some of the equipment that is currently installed is of an age that replacement equipment is no longer even being manufactured and would have to be categorized as being “unavailable”. In undertaking this evaluation it became obvious that outside expertise needed to be secured in order to make recommendations concerning the equipment we now have, what needs to be replaced; and what energy usage benefits that implementation of these recommendations would mean in terms of projected energy expense that could be saved. In implementing this action we have entered into an agreement with CLEAResult Consulting and Entergy Arkansas to provide us with a comprehensive energy efficiency audit, which will cover our facilities, both inside and out. This audit process is currently underway. As soon as the audit is completed, the Property Ministry and the staff will evaluate the audit findings and draft recommendations as to the specific changes that should be undertaken. It is at that time that the activity will move to the specifications stage, which would be applicable to specific equipment needed. As mentioned earlier in this interim report, the compilation of the materials necessary to insure a complete and satisfactory solution to the lighting issue presents a daunting challenge. Progress in meeting this challenge may appear to be slow in coming and in this regard the Property ministry would ask your patience and understanding. Thanks to everyone for their concern.

2nd Presbyterian Family Retreat November 14-16 at Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center

Faith, Family, and the Art of Sacred Storytelling with Neely Stansell-Simpson

Stories knit us together, forming the backbone of cultural and community identity. Storytelling is something we do for pleasure and entertainment, but it is also something that creates order out of chaos, weaving together the scared and the profane to give meaning to our lives. Come explore the art of sacred storytelling and different ways we can put it into practice in the lives of our families.

Neely Stansell-Simpson is a freelance writer who lives in Atlanta, GA with her husband, daughter, two dogs, one cat, and a turtle named Darwin. She studied Christian Education and Philosophy at Presbyterian College and served the Presbyterian Church (USA) for 5 years as a Director of Youth Ministries for two churches, one in Lexington, VA and one in Greenville, SC.

The cost of this retreat covers all your meals, lodging and the program. There are two options for participation. The program time will begin at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning after breakfast and run through lunch on Sunday. You may also join us earlier on Friday night for dinner. After dinner we’ll have casual activities, bedtime stories, and s’mores around the campfire. Housing will be in hotel style rooms with a private bath. The cost for Saturday and Sunday will be $50 per adult, $25 per child age 3-12 and $10 per child under 3 with a maximum of $150 per family. If you would like to join the fun starting with dinner on Friday night the overall cost per family will be an additional $50. Scholarships are available. Please contact Rachel Shepherd ([email protected]) for more information. Please register and submit the deposit of $50 by Wednesday, November 5.

SECOND READERS, Wednesday, November 19, Room #60, 3:00p.m. Anne Tyler's novel DINNER AT THE HOMESICK RESTAURANT addresses the enigma "family" and the difficulty of creating and maintaining family relationships. The story of the Tull family opens as the mother, Pearl Tull, is dying. Beck Tull had left Pearl and their three children years before because he didn't want to be married anymore. The narrative voice changes from character to character throughout the novel thus presenting incidents from different viewpoints and giving better insight to the family dynamics. The story closes with the family meal at the restaurant after Pearl's funeral. Visitors are welcome. Contact Fayrene Johnson at [email protected] or 663-2733.
