2015 Weekend

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

Arturo Sandoval2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, 10 Time Grammy award winner, Emmy award recipient, 6 Time Billboard award winner.

Although awards tell a great deal about a person, Arturo Sandoval’s musical talent and artistry can only be truly appreciated upon hearing him perform. As a protégé of Dizzy Gillepsie, the legendary jazz master, Sandoval began studying classical music on the trumpet but quickly discovered his passion for jazz. Now trained in a variety of styles including jazz, Latin jazz, rock and classical music, he uses his refined musical technique to deliver brilliant performances that elevate the energy in any music venue. Sandoval has an impressive list of nonmusical work including an HBO movie based on his life and his new book chronicling his relationship with his inspiration Dizzy Gillepsie. His compositions can be found in numerous movies as well.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5

Jane MonheitPortuguese vocalist Jane Monheit has a distinguished presence in both the jazz and cabaret worlds of music. After thirteen years of touring and ample experience in the music industry, Jane proudly presents her newest Grammy nominated album The Heart of the Matter. The beginnings of her career were primarily focused on vocal technique and improvisation. Now having established herself and discovering her identity as an artist, Jane focuses on lyrical meaning. As a woman, wife, and mother in her second decade in the music industry, Jane has much to share through her lyrics and finds her passion in singing with the people she loves.

Dirty Dozen Brass BandNow in their 35th year of performing, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is sure to entertain with traditional numbers bridging the sounds of both old and new. While traditional numbers infused with a DDBB flavor have always been crowd-pleasing staples of the group’s repertoire, it’s the Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s willingness to look beyond the New Orleans songbook and find connections amongst a wider range of music that has endeared them to critics, fellow musicians and a multi-generational, global audience. An appetite for musicological adventure, a commitment to honor tradition while not being constrained by it, and a healthy sense of humor have brought the world-traveling Dirty Dozen Brass Band together with each of their unique musical artistry.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6

New York VoicesThe Grammy Award winning, internationally acclaimed vocal group has refined their musical story to its finest. Known for their inspired arrangements and unparalleled vocal blend, NYV has traveled the globe with their elegant music, amazing audiences the world over with their impeccable voices and stunning arrangements. With deep interests rooted in jazz, Brazilian, R & B, classical, and pop, their variety of jazz ensembles will certainly be a favorite.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6 (continued)

Empowerment ChurchThe Empowerment Church, “A Church for All People”, has its home in Southfield, MI. Singing traditional hymns and African-American spirituals under the direction of Rev. Cheryl Sangster with keyboard accompaniment, the Women’s Choir is part of the Church’s music ministry. Spiritual Leadership features Rev. Dr. Carlyle Stewart III, and the Church’s Musical Director is Mr. John E Lawrence.

PERFORMING ALL WEEKEND

Tuck & PattiTo understand Tuck & Patti, start with the wellspring of love within them, then their music begins to make perfect sense. Married 33 years, Tuck Andress and Patti Cathcart continue to stoke the fires, not only of their own love, but also of their love of life and their passion for making music together. They have a long-standing tradition: Minimalist arrangements featuring Tuck’s extraordinary virtuosity and Patti’s rich mezzo soprano. Without even blinking, Tuck-the-problem-solver brags, “Patti writes and arranges; I am just the orchestra.”

Paul KellerPaul began playing the string bass at age 12 and was already performing different gigs at age 16. Originally from Grand Rapids, MI, Paul studied classical music at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Today Paul is string bassist from Metro Detroit. As one of the busiest bassists in the Detroit area, he logs many miles traveling across Michigan to perform at various music venues. His adventures have earned him the nick-name “The House Bass Player For The State Of Michigan.” Mr. Keller is an integral part of Labor Day Jazz Weekend every year and we welcome him back this year.

Alex GrahamAlto saxophonist Alex Graham has performed with a variety of artists. After living in New York City for over ten years, Graham returned to his native Michigan to become the music director at Grand Hotel in 2001. His latest CD on Origin Records, Brand New, was ranked in the top 50 nationally for airplay. Dr. Graham also completed a doctorate in Jazz Studies at Eastman School of Music Rochester, New York, in 2009 and is an Assistant Professor of music and saxophone at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Paul AnthonyJazz radio personality Paul Anthony will continue in his role as master of ceremonies for the festival, and will also host live interviews with the musicians. Mr. Anthony has a large following of listeners spanning more than 45 years as a jazz broadcaster on Washington D.C. stations, National Public Radio, and SIRIUS satellite radio. His professional voice has also announced television programs like “Washington Week” and “America’s Most Wanted” and has been featured on Discovery Channel and PBS television programs.

If inclement weather causes the outside concerts and luncheons to be moved inside the hotel, time changes will be announced for those events the morning of the event. Please make sure to download the festival app to receive such updates.
