What are the parts of speech?Jamal lives in a village.In this sentence we have five words. These five words are

the parts of the sentence. Each word of a sentence or speech is called a part of speech because they have different functions. There are (8) eight parts of speech in English such as-

NounRana is running.Cow gives milk.Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh.Look at these sentences. In these sentences

Rana,Cows,Milk,Dhaka,Capital and Bangladesh are naming words. The word which indicates any name is called a noun.

PronounZahid is a healthy boy.He gets up before sunrise.He goes to school regularlyIn the second and third sentences “he” is

used to instead of “Zahid”. The word which is used instead of a noun to refer to it is called a pronoun.

VerbZahid plays football on Friday.Belal is cleaning the blackboard.I like babies.In the above sentences plays, cleaning, like

indicate doing or action. They are called verbs. A verb is a word used to talk about doing. Eat, run, drink, am, is, are etc. are examples of verbs.

AdverbHe brushes his teeth properly.She sings well.He can run fast.In the above sentences properly, well, fast

describe the verbs. They are called adverb. An adverb is a word which describes verbs. For example regularly, gladly, very, now, soon etc.

extra meaning to the nouns. An adjective is a word which adds extra For example good, bad, lovely, beautiful etc.

PrepositionThere is a glass on the table.There are books in the bag.There are shoes under the table.In the above sentences on, in, under make a

relation between the noun or pronoun and the other parts of sentence. They are called preposition. A preposition is a word used before a noun or pronoun to show relation between the nouns or preposition and the sentence. For example: for, with, behind, at, into, over, above etc.

express strong feelings. They are called interjection. An interjection is a word which expresses strong Feelings.
