Message from the Principal—
The second trimester is wrapping up next week on March 9th; report cards should be sent home the week of March 13th. This is a fabulous time to again reflect on the growth made, challenges overcome, and how to "Finish strong!" the last trimester. Middle School students need our guidance, encourage-ment, and assistance with planning to achieve success. Encourage building organizational skills and pro-vide the quiet time to practice with a planner; students need to reflect upon the day, reviewing what needs to be finished, but also anticipate how to get work done, chores finished and so on for the rest of the week. By this time, we should know the homework expectations; however, if you ever have ques-tions, call the teacher for any verification or clarification. Take time to discuss what happens at school. Request what was learned, what was challenging, what was enjoyable, or offer help or the ability to find help, if as a parent the material is too challenging. Most importantly, take attendance seriously. Stu-dents can't learn if they are not here at school. Above any extracurricular activities, school has to come first. Finally, should you have any questions or concerns about your child's report card, please schedule to meet with your child's teacher or myself. We hope all our students are working to be his/her best and that takes a TEAM effort.

8th Grade Parents- At this point in the school, it's imperative you have decided the high school for your future freshman. Local high schools are scheduling appointments to pick out classes. Should you desire to attend a different high school outside your designated district, ensure you contact the high school dis-trict office and complete the interdistrict paperwork. Looking ahead, pay close
attention to the 8th Grade Newsletter for other important dates and events.
Welcome Spring!
In order to attend classes in the fall 2017, all incoming 7th graders are required by law to have proof of a whooping cough booster (‘Tdap’) shot, or file a medical waiver. Most students will only need to receive the Tdap booster. However, any student
with a personal or religious belief waiver on file, for any shots, will need to obtain the shots waived or get a Medical Waiver from their physician. Exemptions based on personal be-liefs will no longer be an option for the shots that are
currently required for entry into childcare or school in California. For more information, please call the District Nurse at 347-3411, Ext 7575.
perfect attendance. Monthly, the students who have perfect attendance, receive a bag of buttery popcorn. At the end of the year, students with perfect attendance for the entire year will attend a perfect attendance celebration.
Congratulations to the stu-dents who had perfect attend-ance for February. At the end of the second trimester, we will draw two names from each grade level to go to lunch with Mrs. Ross on March 10th. Each student receives one coupon for each month of

Reading is Fun!
We soon will be able to add links, sites, ribbons, widgets,
etc. to our library program. So, if a student comes in and
looks up a biography, it will show him/her our books, e-
books, and sites that will have that biography. It will also
show him/her other sites as well! This will be a ONE STOP
SHOP. We are hoping to add this link to our website so it
will take you directly to the site. Exciting!!

Cold and flu symptoms can make us feel miserable. Flu season usually hits between November and April. Although colds are almost impossible to
avoid, you need to be aware of the difference between the flu, a cold, and even sinusitis because it is important to your health. Managing the symp-
toms of each will prevent you from having to deal with a serious infection in the future.
Not understanding the difference between the flu and a common cold?
SYMPTOMS FLU COLD
Cough Non-productive Hacking
Fever (3-4 days) High (101) Rare
Extreme Exhaustion Early and prominent Never
Headaches Prominent Rare
Aches & Pains Usual, often severe Slight
Chest Discomfort Common Mild to Moderate
Stuffy Nose Sometimes Common
Tiredness/Weakness Can last 2-3 weeks Very Mild
Sore Throat Sometimes Common
Sneezing Sometimes Usual
What is the flu?
The flu, or influenza, is a respiratory infection caused by type A and type B influenza viruses that occurs mostly in fall and winter.
What is a cold?
A cold is a minor viral infection of the nose and throat.
What is sinusitis?
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinus cavities, which is triggered by a cold. Sinus infection may be the case if your common cold lasts
longer than two weeks.
How long will I feel like this?
Colds typically last between 5 and 14 days, although symptoms usually improve after 3 to 5 days. Usually a cold has to run its course to fully
get out of your system. The flu on the other hand may last a little longer than a typical cold. If you think you have the flu, visit your doctor as
soon as symptoms appear, typically within 2 days.
I’ve seen the doctor…Now what?
Other than simply seeing a doctor, there are ways of taking care of you at home. Drinking lots of fluids, especially warm ones, is not a bad
idea to help the infection get through your system. Lots of bed rest is the key to becoming healthy again.
It’s Cold and Flu Season…Do You Know the Difference?
