WHAT IS THE SCHOOL NUTRITION FOUNDATION (SNF)?

• Sister organization to SNA• Raising funds for: 

• Education and professional development• Research• Scholarships for SNA members

• 501(c)(3) organization• Contributions are tax‐deductible

• Established in 1964• “Well‐nourished students ready for success”

WHY DO PEOPLE GIVE?

• Hearts over heads: 

• Should donate to the cause that has the greatest impact

• But people don’t respond to facts and figures

• More responsive to appeals that feature a single, identifiable beneficiary

• Influenced by others: Giving is fundamentally a social act; people give more to a university if the person calling is the person’s former roommate

• Giving is contagious: Seeing others give makes an individual more likely to give

WHY DO PEOPLE GIVE?

• Belief in the mission of the organization

• “Well‐nourished children ready for success”

• Somebody asked him or her to “consider” a gift

• Others were giving to the organization

• Like to be recognized

• Makes them feel good!

STATE INCENTIVE FOR ANNUAL GIVING

• Achieve 3% participation

• 20% of the dollars contributed by the State (including members and other individuals in the state) will be available to the State Affiliate for scholarships (professional development and ANC first‐timers)

• Achieve 5% participation

• 25% of the dollars contributed by the State (including members and other individuals) will be available to the State Affiliate for scholarships

STATE INCENTIVE FOR ANNUAL GIVING

Results in 2016: 

• The following states will receive dollars back for state scholarships:

• Those with more than 5% participation will have 25% of the dollars that the state contributed available for scholarships. (3 states):

• Kansas

• Illinois

• New York

• Those with more than 3% but less than 5% will have 20% available for scholarships. (4 states):

• West Virginia

• Colorado

• California

• Michigan

• The Annual Fund grew from $27,647 to $47,896. The total amount that the Foundation is giving back to the states is $3,519.

STATE INCENTIVE FOR ANNUAL GIVING

• What counts?

• $10 or more

• Made by an individual (not just SNA members)

• Made by State affiliate (included in total, not in % participation)

• Made between January 1 and December 31

• Not restricted for a Special Fund

• Based on membership totals in May 2016

• Scholarship process will mirror the process used by SNF for its scholarship program

STEPS TO SUCCESS: STEP 11. Set goals – Participation and Total

• Consider 3% ‐ 5% Participation

• Consider a monetary goal (Between 3% of State membership X $25 and 5% of State membership X $25)

• Example: Membership of 2,500: 75(3% of 2,500) X $25 = $1,875 and 125(5% of 2,500) X $25 = $3,125  GOAL: $2,500

• Example: Membership of 750: 23 X $25 = $575 and 38 X $25 = $950GOAL: $750

• Resist the urge to set a goal based on $1 or $2 per member

2. Make Your Contribution

• Always easier to ask somebody to do something you have already done

• You can ask others to “join” you in support of the Foundation

3. Ask State Affiliate Leaders to “Consider” Making Contributions

• Share the goals with the officers of State Association

• 100% participation by State Leaders sets the example for other members

• Ask State Leaders to ask others to support the Annual Fund

4. Ask 2016 Donors to Renew Their Support

• Best donors are prior year’s donors – Listed on website

• Ask them to consider a “recurring” gift – monthly gift

• Ask them to ask two – four others to consider a contribution

5. Ask Scholarship Recipients to Consider Making Contributions

• Received benefit from Foundation

• Opportunity to help others

6. Say “Thank You”

• Personal “thank you” means a lot

• Consider handwritten note or phone call

7. Invite others to help

• Your friends

8. Recognize those who have already given

• Publish names of donors in your newsletter

• Have list of names at your State conference

• Allow members to add their name to a list at events

• Separate table with volunteers

• Information on scholarships

• Allow members to add names to a list 

• Ring a bell when gift is made

• Inexpensive give‐away drawing

10.Be positive! And you will succeed! • 3% means 3 out of 100 say “Yes”• 5% means 5 out of 100 say “Yes”

SAMPLE CONVERSATION: PART 1

• Do you know about the School Nutrition Foundation?

• Tell the person about the Foundation in your own words

• Allow the person to ask questions

• Ask: “Would you considermaking a contribution to the Foundation?”

• We hope the answer is YES

• If the person says NO, thank the person and tell him/her that you hope he/she will consider later in the year

SAMPLE CONVERSATION: PART 2

• Then ask: “Would you consider a contribution of $50?”• If the person says that is more than they wish to give, ask: 

• “What amount would be comfortable for you?” • You may want to mention that gifts of $10 or more are included in the incentive 

program for the state affiliate to get scholarship support from the Foundation. 

• Ask the person to complete a pledge form or to make the gift online• Say “THANK YOU.”

• Encourage person to ask 2 – 4 others to “consider” a contribution
