The Residential Housing Committee for the Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development would like to highlight our recent Canton Residential Survey results, and communicate our next steps.

The Residential Housing Committee (RHC) of The Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development (SRPED) was created in 2014 to serve as a clearinghouse for thoughtful and attainable solutions to the housing challenges facing current and future residents of Canton, Illinois.

There were 552 survey respondents with 438 from the Canton area. Only 10% of respondents were retired and 73% work in Canton. Three hundred forty nine (349) of the respondents have lived in the area for longer than 25 years and 115 respondents (21%) have lived in the area for less than 15 years. Sixty nine percent are homeowners and 12% are renters.

This survey sought to identify housing development opportunities within the City of Canton that support and foster quality of life elements for existing and future families in need of housing. Creating healthy, viable neighborhoods provides housing needed close to employment, housing construction contributes to local economy, and new residents support local retail and support local education institutions including both K-12 and Spoon River College.

Schools and parks were ranked as the most important reasons for choosing where to live at 31%. Those Quality of Life attributes were followed by safe and secure neighborhoods, health food and full service grocery stores; reasonable proximity to employment; quality retail; access to adequate health care and hospitals; transportation; and reasonably priced housing.

Canton’s housing survey results mirror national survey data. Seventy three (73) % of respondents indicated they were satisfied with home’s living space and overall condition. The perceived areas of greatest need were affordable housing and rehabbed homes. The greatest obstacles to housing were lack of quality inventory in their price range and cost/taxes.

Key Observations:• Population change is evident in the length of residency responses. • Developing strategies to ensure diverse housing choices are readily available in the community should be an area of

focus.• Housing rehabilitation can be a valuable tool in preserving neighborhoods and presenting affordable housing

choices.• Housing development in the $100,000 - $150,000 was suggested as missing housing option for both seniors and

first time home owners. • Mapping available land for development may be a valuable tool in recruiting developers.• Linking housing development needs to employer needs should be a consideration, i.e. Spoon River College,

Graham Hospital and others.• Linking health, recreation and schools to considerations for housing development, i.e. walkable neighborhoods to

promote active living.• Target areas for new development which can enhance overall appearance of the community.• “Visitability” is a growing trend nationwide. Three basic elements include: zero step entrance + doors with 32

inches of clear passage + one bathroom on the main floor. Continued on page 4

business of their choice. The Youth Leadership Academy has been welcomed and supported by the community as a whole, but in particular, several local businesses have made generous donations. In order to mentor these students, CACC Young Professionals are required to undergo a background check for the School District, and Elam Private Detective graciously agreed to perform this process for us. Fulton County Rural Transit is offering their shuttle services at no cost, in order to transport the students to our workshops off-site. We would like to thank Bigrack’s Steakhouse, Bistro 101, Elam Private Detective, Fulton County Rural Transit, Graham Hospital, Kroger, MidAmerica National Bank, and Spoon River College for all of their support of this worthwhile program.

Next Steps:

1. The Residential Housing Committee (RHC) will collaborate with the Western Illinois Regional Council (WIRC) to apply for Community Development Assistance Program funds through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for the purpose of a residential rehabilitation program.

2. The RHC is exploring Federal & State dollars for demolition of abandoned and dangerous properties.3. The RHC will work with the Planning & Zoning Department to map available land for new development and will

start soliciting potential developers. 4. The RHC will actively leverage current resources of employers, realtors, and landlords to focus on new

opportunities for senior, student and affordable living housing developments. 5. Our goal will be to actively pursue these goals over the course of the next year. Providing quarterly updates on

progress towards goals. Adjustments in strategy will occur as needed during the year, with an eye towards setting new targets for the 2016-2017 year.

NEW CHAMBER MEMBERS What happens when a group of guys who are crazy about all things Halloween spend too much time together? They decide to do a haunted house. That’s exactly what happened to us. After several years of brainstorming, attending trade shows and conferences, and travelling across this great country to visit some of the best haunts in the world, in June of this year we came together collectively to create Spoon River Haunts.

Through each of our unique professions, our paths have crossed and we realized we all had this strange fascination with Halloween and haunted houses. We all bring different talents to our adventure that we believe will lead to a great haunted attraction. Our company is led by Jed Rhoades, a local funeral director and realtor, Matt Keets, owner of a local construction company and paramedic, and Bill Ayers, an unbelievable artist and manager of a local monument company. Our main focus each year will be on providing a quality haunted house that attracts thousands of people from across Central Illinois to our great community. We hope to create strong and lasting partnerships with local civic organizations, high school drama clubs, college theater departments, volunteer fire departments, sports teams, and other community associations who are interested in fundraising efforts for their respective groups. As in any business, ours must produce income to be successful. However, our focus has been and will continue to be, on investing in our community and supporting our neighbors, friends, and families. We are thrilled to announce that our first production, There is Death Within These Walls, will be held this fall, October 16, 17, 23, 24, 29, 30, & 31. The haunted house will be located at the old Heilig Meyers building, at 1607 East Chestnut Street. We will be open each evening from 7-11 p.m. and we will announce a children’s matinee at a later date. To find out how your organization can benefit from involvement in our haunted house, or how your business can take advantage of our unique advertising opportunities, you can reach us via e-mail at [email protected] on Facebook at facebook.com/SpoonRiverHaunts or by phone at 309-333-0616 (Jed), 309-224-9061 (Matt) , or 309-303-4237 (Bill).

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. For more than 100 years, ACS has worked relentlessly to save lives and create a world with less cancer. Together with millions of our supporters worldwide, we help people stay well and get well, find cures, and fight back against cancer. Nearly half of all cancer deaths could be avoided if we did what we know works ─ live healthier lifestyles, quit smoking, and get our recommended cancer screenings. The American Cancer Society is here to help you take steps every day to stay well. We have the resources, information, and support you need. The American Cancer Society is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to help guide you through every step of a cancer experience. Whether you’ve recently been diagnosed, are currently going through treatment, or are caring for a loved one with cancer, we are here. From free lodging and transportation to help making decisions about your care, we offer programs, services, and resources. Also, the American Cancer Society is the largest non-governmental funder of cancer research in the United States, having spent more than $4 billion since 1946 to find cures. But we can’t do any of this without the Relay For Life movement. Relay is an inspiring and uplifting event that brings the fight against cancer directly into your community. It gives everyone a chance to Celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, Remember loved ones lost, and Fight Back against the disease. The Fulton County Relay For Life was started in 2000. In the past 15 years, the community has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of the American Cancer Society’s programs and mission. If you would like more information about the American Cancer Society call 1-800-227-2345. If you would like to get involved in Fulton County’s Relay For Life, please contact ACS Community Manager, Audrey Wise at 309-688-3480 or [email protected].

NEW CHAMBER MEMBERS My name is Larrilyn Hall and my business was established September of 2014. My background is Cosmetology and Education, so the combination of those two areas has greatly assisted me to grow my business. I decided to start a business while I was still working - so I can build up an amazing business and when the day comes I don’t work 9 - 5, I will still be active in the business community - which I love! I decided I needed a product that truly works. I did a lot of research and found Rodan + Fields. When I heard this product was created by the two doctors who created Proactiv, and it was clinically proven to work, I couldn’t say no. Why wouldn’t I join on board with two doctors who have been hugely successful for over 20 years? So I jumped in with both feet and have not had one regret. Rodan + Fields is a web-based business. I’m excited to state the huge difference with my

business is the personal consultations and customer service I bring to a web-based business. My son Tyson Hensley has also joined me in this adventure, and he has been my game changer! Having a man’s perspective to mainly a female clientele has greatly increased my audience. The best part of my business is that it is based out of my home, so work is flexible and travels with me. You can contact me at Larrilynhall.myrandf.com to find out more about the products. For business interest contact me at Larrilynhall.myrandf.biz. My email is [email protected] and my cell is 309.224.0162. I would love to educate the community about skin care and the use of preventative skin care.

River’s EdgeBy Andrea Klindest of the Canton Daily Ledger Locals will no longer have to travel far to buy fishing tackle and hunting supplies as new business River’s Edge has opened its doors. The store is located at 1615 E. Chestnut Street, next to the Label Shopper. Owner Marcus Hale said he started the business “not only for the fun of fishing, but for as much fishing as I do, I get tired of going out of town when I need something or waiting for online orders to arrive.” He thought many people in the area would feel the same, and there is not a local store already that could provide much in the way of unique hunting and fishing gear. Located on the East end of town, his store will serve as a stopping point as people head out to fish at Canton Lake, Banner Marsh or the Illinois River. A wide range of fishing gear for different types of fish, such as catfish and bass, will be available, as will different kinds of bait. The store also will stock live bait such as leaches, minnows, and nine varieties of worms. On the hunting side, they will carry game calls, scent eliminators, scent attractants, targets and a good variety of archery products. A variety of clothing and camping gear that relates to fishing and hunting trips also will be available. Hale said his store will be about 50/50 in fishing and hunting supplies. A number of services such as putting line on new or old fishing poles and obtaining hunting and fishing licenses will be offered. Hale also has been licensed to sell Bass Pro branded products, which includes anything available on the Bass Pro website. He said through his number of wholesalers he will have access to just about anything, so he hopes people will ask if they don’t see something they need and he can get it for them. As the business builds, Hale said he will try daily or weekly deals and have fishing and hunting contests. He also plans to do raffles where someone wins some gear and the rest of the proceeds go to charity.River’s Edge will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, call 435-7110 or click here to visit their Facebook page.

Canton Union School District #66This promises to be another great year in the Canton community. You will notice many new faces this year and several positive changes. The district will implement our one to one program at Canton High School, giving every high school student their own laptop for educational use and communication with staff and fellow students. This changes a bit how classes may be taught and how students learn.

Canton High School has two new administrators. Jennifer Watts is our new principal and Anne Grzanich is the new technology dean. They have both been members on our team, but are taking on new challenges in new assignments.

We invite our parents and community in to see renovations completed on our auditorium. We were able to complete this project with the one cent sales tax money. Along with that we built a new press box, placed a roof on Ingersoll Middle School, and we will refinish the floor at Alice Ingersoll Gymnasium.

Communication is important to us. We have a monthly podcast on display on our website, a district

Facebook page, e-mail, and we always welcome you to stop in and talk with us at the district office or one of our schools. Communication is a priority of our district. If I can ever answer a question, please let me know how I can help. I would also be happy to give you a tour and show you all the good things happening in Canton Schools. Welcome back to school! Canton Union School District will see some changes this year, but we consider change a good thing at the Canton School District. We are embracing the change as we prepare for the future
