Language Arts

Our language Arts program is comprised of three parts: Writing Workshop, Reading Workshop, and Word Study (Spelling).

Writing Workshop

•Students write in a variety of formats, including creative, expository, and letter writing. They generate their own leads and also learn to write from a prompt.

•Students conference and edit with peers, adults, and teachers.

•Mini-lessons will focus on improving writing through grammar, voice, and other conventions in the context of students’ writing.

Students will maintain a writing portfolio to show their growth throughout the year.

Spelling

Initially a Developmental Spelling Analysis is administered to determine each student’s stage of learning a Word Study. Groups are then established based upon the results of the analysis for appropriate instruction.

Each week’s spelling list will focus on given word patterns, for example:

Long Vowel Patterns: a,e,i,o,and u

Spelling Activities•Students will complete activities that will allow them to build word study skills.

•www.Puzzlemaker.com and wwwFunbrain.com are two sites that we use for spelling puzzles.

•Tests are given on Fridays.

In our reading program, we will be using novels, short stories, library books, and magazines in order to read fiction and non-fiction.
