LightweightAs a result of our joint venture with Hexagon, we have developed a new 27" diameter all carbon fiber construction cylinder, which provides greater capacity and reduced weight while maintaining outstanding strength characteristics.

CompaCtDesigned to fit within the existing fairings to maintain the truck’s aerodynamics and installed directly behind the cabin using only 31 1/4" of rail space, our fuel system is mounted entirely above the frame rail.

SafeNew, area Pressure Relief Device (PRD) technology releases pressure from the cylinders if a thermal event or damage to the system occurs. These new PRDs monitor the entire length of the cylinders and empty the fuel sys tem wi th the fastest flow rate available.

Welcome to ACT Expo 2015And Welcome to Texas!

Now that months of planning, research, and conference development are under our belt we are delighted to have the fifth annual Alternative Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo finally underway. It’s showtime at last, and on behalf of Gladstein, Neandross & Associates, creators and organizers of this event, I welcome you to Dallas, to ACT Expo, and to what promises to be an action-packed week. We are glad you’re here.

Much has changed since ACT last convened in Long Beach just one year ago. While you’ll still find the industry’s largest Expo Hall, informa-tive workshops and sessions, and more networking opportunities than most other events put together, we’re raising the bar this year with the addition of new partners such as the Electric Drive Transportation Association, new product and partnership and policy announcements from organiza-tions large and small, and exciting enhancements to your overall event experience such as the ACT Expo mobile app.

As at previous shows, we have done our best to bring the fleet operator, the men and women putting the rubber on the road, the widest possible range of products and technologies to reduce emissions and save money. Here in Dallas we have more electric options than ever before at ACT Expo – Nissan LEAF is a Presenting Sponsor. We present a growing cadre of companies helping make natural gas vehicles a market reality (at least half a dozen companies are supplying CNG cylinder arrays for heavy duty vehicles now), and we’re benefiting again from the continued backing of the Propane Education & Research Council: PERC’s support has made propane autogas the most popular of the alternative fuels – and has helped propane autogas penetrate new markets.

Are we in a new era of Cheap Oil? Most experts think not. But say we are. You’ll learn at ACT Expo this week why the alternatives to gasoline and

diesel can pay back even when gasoline and diesel are cheap. Stability counts, as do life cycle costs and sustainability. As a wise man once said, “Fleet operators are realizing that it is possible to do the right thing and to save money doing it.”

The ACT Expo 2015 Expo Hall is packed with more sponsors, exhibitors, and surprises than ever before. From the Trucking Efficiency Pavilion, to the Electric Drive Showcase, to first looks at new technologies from a host of our sponsors. The Expo Hall is a highlight and networking on the show floor is your best opportunity for making the connections needed to enhance your own fleet operations. And, let’s not forget the ACT Expo 2015 Ride-and-Drive –ready to get behind the wheel of a cutting-edge alternative fuel vehicle? From battery electrics to natural gas to hydraulic hybrids … take your pick this afternoon.

From a relevant and detail-focused agenda, to the packed Expo Hall, to the entertainment and reception options – we’ve worked hard to ensure a superior event experience for all attendees.

We hope you’ll find that this year’s event surpasses your expectations and has you ready to book an early-bird registration for ACT Expo 2016.

Please call on any member of the Gladstein, Neandross & Associates and event staff for help with any questions or with suggestions regarding how to make ACT Expo even better (GNA is at Booth 927).

Here’s to a great conference!Erik Neandross

Clean Energy Redeem for UPSUPS said here yesterday that it’s agreed with Clean Energy Fuels to purchase Redeem brand renewable natural gas, and that UPS fueling sta-tions in Sacramento, Fresno and Los Angeles are to begin pumping the landfill-derived RNG this month. UPS said that the deal makes it the larg-est user of RNG in the U.S. shipping industry, and furthers a goal of logging one billion alt fuel and advanced technology vehicle miles by the end of 2017.

UPS and Clean Energy (Booth 1629) estimate that the three California stations will provide approximately 1.5 million gallon equivalents

annually of RNG to support nearly 400 CNG-fueled UPS vehicles in California.

The pact will help grow the market for the use of methane gas from landfills as fuel, UPS said.

“Today’s RNG agreement will help mature the market for this promising alternative fuel,” said UPS senior transportation and engineer-ing VP Mitch Nichols. “This commitment also positions UPS to use RNG in its extensive natural gas fleet which includes more than 2,500 medium and heavy duty vehicles.”

Ford has pledged to release a gaseous-prep ver-sion of its 5.0-liter spark-ignition V-8 engine for 2016, paving the way for sales of propane autogas- and CNG-powered versions of the F-150 pickup.

The new engine, Ford says, makes it the only manufacturer of a CNG/propane-capable half-ton pickup. The 5.0-liter order book will open in the fall, with F-150 vehicles available from four QVM/Qualified Vehicle Modifier upfitters: •  Altech-Eco, Asheville, N.C. – CNG; •  Impco Automotive – CNG and propane (Booth 327)•  Westport – CNG (Booth 748); and•  Venchurs Vehicle Systems, Adrian, Mich.

Ford (Booth 1027) also said here Monday that it’s sold more than 57,000 vehicles prepped to run on CNG or propane since 2009 – “seven times more than all other major U.S. automakers combined.” Last year was the fifth consecutive year for record sales of gas-prepped vehicles, and “2015 is on track to be even stronger.”

Ford claims “the broadest portfolio of natu-ral gas and propane offerings,” as the 5.0-liter engine for the F-150 joins the following:•  2.5-liter DOHC I-4 in the Transit Connect; •  3.7-liter Ti-VCT V-6 in the Transit van;•  5.4-liter V-8 and 6.8-liter V-10 in E-Series cutaway and stripped chassis vehicles;•  6.2-liter V-8 in F-250 and F-350 Super Duty

trucks; •  6.8-liter V-10 in F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks; •  6.8-liter V-10 in F-53 and F-59 stripped chassis vehicles; and •  6.8-liter V-10 in F-650 and F-750 chassis cab.

Landi Renzo USA (Booth 737) for CNG and Roush CleanTech for propane autogas are Ford QVMs too. Roush is exhibiting with PERC, the Propane Education & Research Council, at Booth 407.

The gas-prep option from Ford costs approximately $315.

Cummins Westport unveiled its latest engine, the all-natural gas, 6.7-liter, spark-ignition ISB6.7 G, at Booth 746 here yesterday evening.

Production is to commence in mid-2016 at EMEP, the Cummins Rocky Mount Engine Plant in Whitakers, N.C.

“It completes our product family,” says Cummins Westport president Rob Neitzke. The new engine complements Cummins Westport’s 8.9-liter ISL G and the 11.9-liter ISX12 G, and brings the dedicated-natural gas option to a new class of vehicles.

The first application of the ISB6.7 G will be in Type C Thomas Built school buses, Neitzke told Fleets & Fuels, men-tioning yard spotters and street sweep-ers as other potential markets. He notes too that the base Cummins ISB powers the popular Dodge Ram diesel pick-up truck.

Like the ISL G and ISX12 G, the new ISB6.7 G is a stoichiometric engine with cooled EGR/exhaust gas recircula-tion and three-way catalyst. Preliminary ISB6.7 G specifications include a range of ratings up to 260 horsepower and 660 foot-pounds torque.

The Cummins Westport joint ven-ture was formed in 2001.

“As of December 2014 we have delivered over 50,000 engines of which over 30,000 are ISL Gs,” says marketing director Jeff Campbell.

Ford Truck group marketing manager Doug Scott introduced the 5.0-liter engine-powered F-150 for 2016 here on Monday.

Margo Oge Helps Drive the FutureThe Women in ACT Summit here Monday brought together some of the industry’s lead-ing business and policy experts (who happen to be women) to discuss the bottom-line benefits of diversity in leadership in this male-dominated industry.

Among the stars was the woman widely cred-ited as the chief architect behind the nation’s 54.5-mpg CAFE and greenhouse gas emissions standards for passenger cars and light duty trucks, which were adopted in 2012.

Engineer Margo Oge was director of the U.S. EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality at the time.

Oge was here signing copies of her new book,

Driving the Future Combating Climate Change with Cleaner, Smarter Cars. Oge’s former boss, then-EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, describes the book published last month as “…a riveting insider’s account of the people, science, politics, and technologies behind an improbable victory in the battle against global warming.”

Marcia Ferranto, president and chief execu-tive officer of WTS International, moderated the Women in ACT Summit. WTS, or Women’s Transportation Seminar, is an international organization dedicated to building the future of transportation through the global advancement of women. It boasts more than 5,000 members – both women and men.

If anyone can make an educated guess on the future world oil market, it’s T. Boone Pickens. The oil magnate-turned natural gas proponent shared his sage observations on the market’s cyclical nature in yesterday’s opening plenary here at ACT Expo 2015.

“Since 1980 I’ve seen six of these collapses,” in the price of oil, Pickens said, predicting that per-barrel price would return to $70 by year-end, and hit $90 by the end of next year.

Volatile oil prices argue for investment in

domestic alternative fuels. Natural gas today is under $4. Even if it increased to $6, per-gallon fuel costs would rise only 37 cents, he said. Gas-eous fuel, in other words, is very cheap.

“I have a birthday this month and I’ll be 87. I don’t think in my lifetime I’ll see $10 natural gas again. I think I will see $8. When I see that, I can promise you, crude oil will be $150 a barrel.”

Price and the environment aside, the real reason Pickens supports natural gas – or any other domestic fuel – is that it’s American.

“Anything that’s American is good,” he said. “I don’t like OPEC Oil. The problem with OPEC oil is you’re funding both sides of a war.”

The transition to natural gas has been slower than he expected.

“I’ve been at this since 1988 and thought it would only take three years to penetrate the market.”

Still, he said, early adopters have proven natural gas will do the job, and now’s the time to switch.

“We’re moving to it. It’s time to do it. It’s the right way to go and we’re going that way.”

AmpCNG said here Monday that its fleet of 42 Class 8 CNG trucks has surpassed 30 million miles achieving fuel efficiency of 6.17 miles per diesel equiva-lent gallon.

The Kenworth vehicles are leased by Renewable Dairy Fuels, a subsidiary of AmpCNG, and operated by Ruan. The fleet carries raw milk from Indiana’s Fair Oaks Farms to processing facilities in Kentucky, Michigan, Ten-nessee and Indiana. They are fueled by biomethane sourced from the same Fair Oaks cows.

The fleet demonstrates “the commer-cial and operational viability of CNG as a fuel for heavy-duty trucks,” AmpCNG says, noting that its “primary business is developing, owning, and operating public access CNG fueling stations built for the

heavy-duty trucking industry.” AmpCNG (Booth 212) currently owns

and operates 21 CNG stations nationwide (19 of which are part of Amp Trillium, AmpCNG’s joint venture with Trillium CNG) and has plans to open several more this year.

Trillium CNG is at Booth 605.

Rush Enterprises launched Momentum Fuel Technologies at ACT Expo on Monday, detail-ing plans to put lightweight Type IV CNG fuel cylinders from 3M to work on innovative fuel

systems for Class 6 through Class 8 vehicles.“We believe that the preference for natural

gas vehicles will continue to grow,” said Rush Enterprises chairman, CEO and president W.M. “Rusty” Rush. Share of the overall truck market? “I’m on the 10% in 2018 train,” he said.

Momentum’s CNG fuel systems will be built at a multi-million dollar, 109,000-square-foot factory with state-of-the-art machining equip-ment here in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro-plex. The Momentum CNG fuel assemblies have been designed for quick fills and operator ease, with such advanced features as area PRDs and color-coded componentry for safety, and temperature-compensated electronic fill sensors. Slow- and transit-fill ports are standard.

Momentum is taking advantage of a Rush network of approximately 120 service centers in 20 states, including 14 locations that already have dedicated natural gas service bays. All new locations will have such bays, Rusty Rush said here Monday.

The company has some 300 mobile service units, too.

“We’re a service solutions provider,” Rush said. “Services sell trucks. Service will sell fuel systems.”

He noted that Rush is a $4.7 billion company that sold 35,352 trucks last year, handling some 36% of Peterbilt’s production.

“We’ve got the balance sheet and the

wherewithal to play in this game,” he said.Rush also handles Navistar International/IC

Bus, Hino, Isuzu, Ford, and Blue Bird vehicles. Momentum is initially offering rail/side-

mount CNG systems holding 40 diesel gallon equivalents affording a range of 176 to 220 miles, and 45 DGE units providing estimated range of 198 to 248 miles. The initial back-of-cab system will hold 110 DGEs for a range of 506 to 633 miles. A second BoC system, holding 150 DGEs for range of 660 to 825 miles, is promised for fall 2015.

Future development, said Momentum GM Mike Zimmerman, will include an expanded range of configurations. “In addition, we will continue to work with Cummins Engine Company and other major engine manufacturers to ensure the Momentum CNG fuel system is well integrated and optimized to work efficiently with current and developing engine technology,” he said.

“There’s not a fleet out there that’s not look-ing for an alternative,” Rush senior VP for dealer operations said here Monday.

“We’re in it for the long haul,” said Rush. “Investment will continue.”

California’s CNG Cylinders International comes to ACT Expo 2015 under new owner-ship and with a broader strategy.

CNGci (Booth 1519) is now a unit of Ger-many’s Winkelmann Group, a 4,000-employee enterprise with annual revenue of more than $600 million.

Closer to home, CNGci is branching from

Type III cylinder manufacturing to fuel cylin-der assemblies, bringing its 27-inch diameter tanks – the largest Type IIIs in the business – to the CNG truck sector.

“Bundling will be more important going forward,” says CNGci marketing manager Randolf Wollgiehn. “People like to have a one-stop shop.” The initial focus is on rail-mounted CNG cylinder assemblies. CNGci uses valves from OMB Saleri (Booth 651).

A Class 5 International 4000 series truck by North American Repower (Booth 938) with a CNGci fuel system is in today’s ride-and-drive. It is also to be shown at the McCommas Bluff Landfill during one of tomorrow’s ACT Expo 2015 tours.

CNGci notes that its new parent Winkel-mann has manufacturing operations at five plants in China, Poland and Turkey. The firm provides flow-formed products such as pulleys, transmission components and aircraft landing gear shock cartridges – and now has a presence in the CNG cylinder business.

U.S. natural gas vehicles production as a whole was down 6.5% last year, but the fall-off was limited to light duty vehicles – medium and heavy duty NGVs saw significant growth, NGVAmerica reports.

NGVAmerica’s 2014 NGV Production/Sales Report is based on an annual survey of OEMs and suppliers. Among the major findings:•  in 2014, NGV production/sales totaled just over 18,000 vehicles;•  the heavy duty market segment grew at a healthy pace, up 30% over 2013; and•  the medium duty market segment also grew steadily, up 24% over 2013.

“As the price of oil rebounds, NGVs’ eco-nomic value proposition will improve further, and when combined with the other advan-tages of natural gas – stable fuel prices, reli-able technology and reduced emissions – sales growth will once again accelerate,” states an NGVAmerica summary.

Separately, NGVAmerica (Booth 1717) has made a new presentation available for members wishing to better address oil volatility issues. The slide deck includes current natural gas vehicle production and sales figures.

There is an ongoing “compelling case” for NGVs, the association says: natural gas is a domestic fuel with stable pricing relative to the conventional liquids. Even with low price of oil, natural gas offers “significant savings over both diesel and gasoline.”

The basic message: the price of oil will rise again. “Current pricing is not sustainable for many oil producing nations,” NGVAmerica says.

In addition to its industry-largest, fast fill-capable Type III fuel cylinders, CNGci is designing its own CNG cylinder arrays, starting with rail-mount units. The 23-inch CNGci cylinder on North American Repower’s box truck in today’s ride-and-drive is shown here.

At ACT Expo 2015, the Propane Education & Research Council will be showcasing an expand-ing lineup of medium and heavy duty propane autogas vehicles. Both dedicated and aftermar-ket options will be represented at Booth 305/407, including a Roush CleanTech Ford F-650, Alli-ance Autogas diesel substitution equipment on a Class 8 Volvo, and fueling dispensers from Superior Energy Systems and CleanFuel USA.

Propane autogas has been making significant in-roads in school transportation. Why does propane work so well in that market?

Propane autogas is the perfect solution for school bus fleets. Not only does it save fleets’ valuable budget dollars – it also provides reliable performance over the life of the bus.

Unlike diesel, propane autogas does not require DEF, fuel conditioners to prevent gell-ing, extra oil, or other additives to perform, which saves fleets time and money. And even on the coldest winter mornings, school dis-tricts report that today’s propane autogas liquid

injection technology ensures their buses heat up quickly, without the aid of fuel conditioners or engine heating blocks.

Propane autogas engines also operate 50% quieter than their diesel counterparts, which

increases safety in the passenger compart-ment and the school bus entrance, side, front, and rear zones. This allows drivers to focus better on the sounds inside and outside of the vehicle – pro-viding a safer, more pleasant ride for everyone.

School districts considering propane autogas can now choose from vehicle offerings from all of the major school bus man-ufacturers – Blue Bird, Collins, IC Bus, and Thomas Built. These buses offer proven OEM-backed performance and capabilities comparable to conventionally fueled models.

Recently, we’ve seen a decline in gasoline and diesel prices; how has that affected propane autogas equipment sales and value proposition?

Although the low cost of conventional fuels may seem like an obstacle for the alternative fuel industry, falling gasoline and diesel prices have shown no long-term effects on propane autogas.

Historically, propane autogas pricing has proven less volatile than gasoline and diesel, giv-ing fleet managers more stability in predicting fuel costs. Gasoline and diesel have had major price swings in the past and will again in the future. And while alternative fuels like propane autogas also fluctuate in price, they consistently track at a lower price than oil. Plus, propane autogas-powered fleets find that the fuel pro-vides further savings due to low infrastructure, fuel, and maintenance costs over the lifetime of their fleet.

Propane autogas infrastructure is among the most affordable to install of any fuel. And, in some cases, a propane retailer may even cover some of the initial installation costs when fleets commit to a fueling contract.

When compared with diesel engines, propane autogas engines are less complex and easier to maintain. Environmental regulations require the addition of emission reduction systems to diesel engines, which result in increased maintenance, downtime, parts to replace, and even additional training needs.

While fuel cost is important, fleets should look beyond the pump and take into consideration the total cost-of-ownership with propane autogas.

PERC has invested in a variety of propane autogas technologies over the years. Where do you see the technology going now and into the future?

The rising demand for propane autogas has driven PERC to invest in technology develop-ment of medium and heavy duty product offer-ings. Propane autogas is emerging as a viable alternative to complex and increasingly costly diesel vehicles.

The Roush CleanTech Ford F-650, Freight-liner Custom Chassis Corp’s S2G, and Alliance Autogas diesel substitution technology have opened up medium and heavy duty equipment options for fleet managers – and have presented opportunities for growth in new industries, including utility operations, people transporta-tion, delivery, and more.

In addition to expanding product offerings, propane autogas has seen advancements in exist-ing technology. Recently, new fueling nozzles have been introduced in the U.S. These clean, low-emissions nozzles make propane autogas fueling easier and more like conventional fueling than ever before.

As clean, American-produced propane autogas continues to see growth and customer demand, PERC will continue to invest in tech-nology development and help the list of product offerings grow.

PERC Does Propane Autogas ProudWhat can attendees look forward to from PERC at this year’s show?

Blossman Services and its affiliated Alliance AutoGas unit are taking propane autogas to the big rig sector. Their propane-diesel dual fuel equipment is on show on a Class 8 truck with 12.8-liter Volvo D13/Mack MP8 engine at Booth 305/407.

UPS, which revealed its plans for an LNG-fueled over-the-road truck fleet that now exceeds 1,000 vehicles at ACT Expo 2013 in Washington, said last month that it would add 1,400 heavy and medium duty compressed natural gas vehicles over the coming year, building 15 new CNG fuel-ing facilities to support them.

TruStar Energy (Booth 827) is building the sta-tions using Ariel compressors packaged by ANGI Energy Systems (936).

A total of 15 new CNG stations in 11 states will fuel more than 2,000 NGVs operated by UPS once the freight and package delivery firm’s

1,400 new vehicle are deployed, TruStar says.Station construction has already begun in

Oklahoma City and New Orleans. Twelve of the new CNG stations for UPS are in new loca-tions and three will replace existing, outmoded facilities.

“One of TruStar Energy’s core value proposi-tions is our ability to design and build stations quickly and with little disruption at a customer’s location,” said TruStar sales VP Scott Edelbach.

“This works particularly well for the UPS sta-tions, simply because their distribution centers are constantly receiving and dispatching packages,” he said.

The ANGI equipment includes NG300 and NG600 compressor packages, as well as con-trols, valve systems, and Fleet/Hi-Flow Series II dispensers.

UPS said it plans to deploy the new CNG vehicles in 15 cities: Atlanta, Charleston, Dal-las, Denver, New Orleans, and Oklahoma City, and in Doraville, Ga.; Lenexa, Kans.; Lexington, Ky.; Montgomery, Ala.; New Stanton, Pa.; Port Allen, La.; Shreveport, La.; and Richmond and Roanoke, Va.

UPS now has a total of eight CNG fueling stations in California, Colorado, Georgia and Oklahoma.

In addition to the design and construction of the 15 new CNG stations, TruStar has been contracted to provide service and maintenance for 13 on an annual contract basis.

“We’ve continued to develop our nationwide service and maintenance group, which works hand-in-hand with our construction teams to ensure our customers stations remain produc-tive and profitable,” said TruStar president Adam Comora. TruStar service personnel are to be dedi-cated to each of the UPS stations to ensure rapid response.

Kenworth (Booth 555) and Freight-l iner Custom Chassis Corp (705) are getting the lion’s share of the new vehi-cles business behind the huge new CNG commitment by UPS.

The new trucks will be a mix of approximately 800 tractors and 600 “package cars.” The “heavy majority” of the tractors will be provided by Ken-worth, said UPS global procurement director Mike Casteel, although he expects a smaller number of trucks from Mack and Freightliner as well.

The package cars will be built by Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp with Morgan Olson bodies. The FCCC vehicles will be in Class 5 and Class 6 sizes, using the company’s MT-45 and MT-55 chassis, Casteel says. They’ll have 6.0-liter GM engines with fuel systems from Landi Renzo USA (737), installed by Green Alternative Systems in Indiana. They’ll have lightweight Type IV CNG tanks.

Agility Fuel Systems (437) and Quantum Tech-nologies (1527) are the principal suppliers of CNG cylinder assemblies for the new heavy duty trucks for UPS. Agility will use Type IV CNG cylinders from Hexagon Lincoln (337) for new 160-diesel-gallon-equivalent storage modules for 445 UPS trucks. The 27-by-80-inch tanks are fruit of Agility’s new joint venture with Hexagon Lincoln – announced at ACT Expo 2014 in Long Beach, Calif.

“They are lighter, higher capacity and exclu-sively available through Agility,” marketing and sales planning VP Luis Salem told Fleets & Fuels.

Agility Fuel Systems (Booth 437) released details last month about the role it’s played in supporting UPS’s drive to be one of the leading practitioners of alternative fuel transportation in the U.S.

Agility will supply compressed natural gas systems for more than half of the 800 heavy duty CNG vehicles just announced by UPS – using fuel cylinders by Hexagon Lincoln (337) – and disclosed that it also supplied the liquefied natural gas systems – using LNG tanks from Chart Industries (727) – for the existing UPS fleet of LNG trucks.

“UPS has led the industry in the adoption of natural gas in heavy duty on-road trucking and with this new order, will be operating almost 1,600 heavy duty trucks equipped with CNG or LNG fuel systems supplied by Agility,” Agility said.

“Today’s announcement is further validation of our technological leadership, innovative and space saving fuel system designs, reliability and industry-leading field support,” said Agility CEO Barry Engle.

“These trucks, once fully deployed, are projected to run more than 230 million miles annually and with Agility’s comprehensive field support, are achieving up-time results that are comparable to diesel trucks,” Agility said.

‘Beauty’ in Bent Fuel LinesBending the tubes that carry natural gas fuel to a natural gas engine can impede performance and

increase the risk of failure. It’s an overlooked problem involving geom-etry – ovality – and physics, and can be minimized with care and planning and the use of proper materials, says AFV Natural Gas Fuel Systems GM Kevin Dickey. “The best solution can often be to re-route the tube and lessen the angle of the bend,” he said in a recent blog post, detailing the problem with reference to the diameter of the tubes being bent, wall thickness of the tube, centerline radius of the bend, ovality percentage, and ASME guidelines on the subject. “The fuel line system overall,” Dickey says, “needs to reflect the engineering thought that went into the routing and layout.” AFV is at Booth 1513.

Volvo Invests in Peloton ‘Platoon’Volvo Group Venture Capital said last week that it’s invested in Mountain View, Calif.-based Peloton Technol-ogy. Peloton develops vehicle technologies that deliver safety and fuel savings to fleets in the trucking industry, notably an integrated safety, efficiency and analyt-ics platform for truck platooning. “The Peloton system electronically couples trucks through a combination of vehicle-to-vehicle communi-cations, radar-based active braking systems and proprietary vehicle control algorithms,” Volvo says, noting that a study of the Peloton system by NACFE, the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (Booth 1450), showed fuel consumption reductions of 10% for the rear commercial vehicle and by more than 4% for the front vehicle. Volvo Trucks is at Booth 1725.

Power & Performance with Natural Gas

Workhorse Group – the name was officially changed from Amp last month – has brought its E-Gen range-extended electric vehicle chassis to ACT Expo 2015, along with the HorseFly pack-age delivery drone. Workhorse is at Booth 1430.

The drone, integrated with a Workhorse delivery truck, may help the company as it vies for a huge piece of business with the U.S. Postal Ser-vice. The Post Office has included Workhorse/Amp among 15 companies that will receive RFPs for a huge vehicle buy: approximately 180,000 vehicles, costing $25,000 to $35,000 apiece, to replace the current aging fleet, with deliveries commencing in late 2017 or early 2018 and run-ning as long as seven years.

It’s “the largest one-time purchase of vehicles in the history of the world,” says Workhorse CEO Steve Burns. The Post Office has said it wants its new vehicles, which are to last 20 years, to accom-modate future delivery trends. “The HorseFly is an intriguing part of the future,” Burns says.

Closer to Earth, Workhorse spread the news last week that it’s delivered the first two E-Gen

trucks to “a major transportation company.” Burns said his firm is “thrilled that the electric vehicle is making deliveries to customers in the field.”

Here in Texas, the Houston-Galveston Area Council is supporting the placement of 18 Work-horse trucks with UPS, with deliveries slated for later this year.

Workhorse is promoting a new e-truck design, based on the 88-inch W-88 chassis, using a single, 200-kilowatt Sumo brand motor, from Canada’s TM4. With 2,200 nm torque, “It’s so strong it doesn’t need a transmission,” Burns says.

The one-motor design saves money, with the motor available to serve as a generator to charge the truck’s 60-kilowatt-hour, Panasonic 18650 lithium ion cell-based battery pack. Workhorse is using a 2.4-liter engine from Power Solutions International (Booth 419) as a range-extender.

“The engine’s only going to come on at rare times,” Burns says, as he expects the E-Gen truck to be able to complete most work days on a single charge. Range is stated at 60 miles. Burns says

that if a driver needs a boost, the truck can be left in charge mode for a minute or two at a time at package delivery stops, to get through the day.

The PSI engine may be fueled by gasoline, CNG or propane autogas.

The former Amp purchased the Workhorse name – and a 200,000-square-foot factory in Union City, Ind. – from Navistar International for $5 million in early 2013.

“What do water, fuel and linens have in common?” asks Roush CleanTech. All three of them are deliv-ered to customers in vehicles powered by propane autogas, the company says, as firms spanning a wide range of industries are adopting propane autogas trucks and vans for their versatility.

“These clean-burning, cost-effective light- and medium-duty vehicles are checking all of the boxes when it comes to alternative fuels,” Roush says.•  Water. Nestlé Waters North America runs five Ford F-550 beverage trucks equipped with Roush CleanTech propane autogas fuel systems at its Los Angeles location. The trucks deliver the company’s Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water to area businesses and residents. Nestlé Waters cites full factory warranty maintained, ease of fueling and low infrastructure cost as reasons for choosing autogas.

One of Nestlé Waters’ Roush CleanTech trucks is on display in the Propane Education & Research Council’s Booth 305/407.•  Fuel. AmeriGas Propane, Inc., the nation’s largest retail propane supplier, has operated

fleet vehicles with the fuel it sells for well over 30 years. The propane provider recently pur-chased 50 new Roush CleanTech Ford F-550s equipped with cranes to deliver propane tanks to customer sites across the nation. That’s in addition to the 35 that were deployed two years ago. The company says that its autogas fleet demonstrates the viability of pro-pane as an on-road vehicle fuel, lessens noise in neighborhoods being serviced, and lowers harm-ful emissions. Over the lifetime of the Ford F-550 vehicles, more than 12.7 million pounds of carbon diox-ide will be eliminated from Ameri-Gas’ total carbon footprint.•  Linen. AmeriPride Services, one of North America’s largest textile rental and supply companies, has been testing a variety of alternative fuels. Their five Roush CleanTech Ford F-59 delivery trucks servicing Topeka provided them the economi-cal and environmental benefits they expected.

Due to this success, they are adding 20 more in Northern California later this year.

Propane autogas, Roush notes is a low-carbon fuel that reduces greenhouse gases by up to 25%,

carbon monoxide by up to 60%, nitrogen oxide by 20%, “and virtually eliminates particulate matter when compared to conventional fuels.” Propane is a non-contaminant of soil, air, and water.

“Powerful like a jet, and clean like a windmill,” says California’s Wrightspeed (Booth 1127), describing the new, fuel-versatile Fulcrum tur-bine engine it’s making an intrinsic part of its Route brand plug-in hybrid electric driveline for trucks.

“Wrightspeed now owns 100% of the Intel-lectual Property of its powertrain products,” the company says. “Each component of every Wrightspeed powertrain is engineered from the ground up to systematically deliver ideal performance.”

The 80-kilowatt Fulcrum weighs just 250 pounds, about one-tenth the weight of an equivalent piston engine. It is designed to have a 10,000 hour lifetime, and to meet California Air Resources Board emissions limits with no catalytic converter.

And, because the turbine serves only to charge the battery pack on Wrightspeed’s series driveline, it can run at its cleanest and most effi-cient operating point: “We don’t care about its efficiency at idle,” says Wrightspeed founder and CEO Ian Wright – dismissing a chronic problem for automotive turbines.

“We believe turbines will begin to replace piston engines in range-extended electric vehicle applications,” he says.

“This is an inflection point,” Wright told Fleets & Fuels. “You’re going to see turbines take over in wheeled vehicles the way they took over in aircraft.”

Wrightspeed placed two of its trucks with Capstone turbines with FedEx last year, and according to Wright, the 25 additional vehicles on order will have the Fulcrum turbine.

Likewise, 17 model year 2003-2006 Freightliner and Condor col-lection trucks operated by the Santa Rosa, Calif.-based Ratto Group will be converted to PHEV operation using the Ful-crum. The project has a double environmental benefit in that fuel will be saved and trucks that would otherwise be junked will instead be kept working, says COO Lou Ratto. He spoke at the Waste Disposal, Construction Fleets, & Work Trucks session yesterday afternoon.

A two-stage compression process and unique recuperation design make the Fulcrum 30%

more efficient than existing turbine genera-tors, Wrightspeed says, “while tripling usable power.” Fulcrum’s “multi-fuel capabilities allow it to burn diesel, CNG, LNG, landfill gases,

biodiesel, kerosene, propane, heating oil, and others,” the company adds.

Wrightspeed designs its own traction motors, too. The company uses a lithium iron phosphate battery from A123 in its own liquid-cooled bat-tery packs.

Wright moderated the Spotlight on Pickup & Delivery and Service Vehicles session here yesterday.

Wrightspeed Adds Its Own Turbine

Wrightspeed’s new ‘Fulcrum’ turbine is a key part of its range-extended ‘Route’ driveline going forward.

ates usually takes a back seat once the conference gets rolling,

but this year is talking up its prow-ess in secur-ing the grant and incentive money that’s helping make

alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles a reality on American roads.

GNA (Booth 927) has secured upwards of $255 million for its clients over the years.

That’s $255 million. Put another way, GNA has helped secure funding for some 2,700 natural gas vehicles and 78 fueling stations.

“We’ve won $255 million and we have more than a 90% success rate,” says Carolyn McGough, senior GNA program manager. “We have written more than 300 grant applications.”

“We’ll help you track the opportunities,” she says: GNA maintains a team of eight professionals who track grants across the U.S. and in Canada, keeping tabs on solicitations – and planned solicita-tions – at the federal, state and local level.

“GNA pays for itself,” McGough says. “We charge clients for this work, but we get them lots of funding.”

“Timing is key,” she notes. More than 500 funding programs are updated on a regular basis, allowing applicants to be ready when solicitations are launched. “This is huge for our clients.”

It’s also important for the agencies. If they don’t get applicants, those programs can be discontin-ued. GNA’s vigilance helps make sure they are not.

California-headquartered Fueling and Service Technologies, which provides natural gas fueling station construction services, has received the first several of 50 Dodge Promaster vans converted to natural gas operation by World CNG (Booth 1721). The CNG vans “will provide our organization with a competitive edge by reducing our operating expenses largely due to the high mpg and lower cost of fuel,” says Fastech’s construction manager Tim Caldwell. Fuel is furnished by Clean Energy

(Booth 1629). Fastech is at Booth 1305.

Senior GNA program manager Carolyn McGough is speaking at the Show Me the Money: Grants, Tax Programs & Incentives session in Room C3 at 11:00am today.

GNA’s Grant Guru Tracks Incentive OpportunitiesIn addition to writing grants, GNA helps

awardees with the reporting requirements that grant money entails. “We make it nice and easy,” McGough says. Hence the term, “Grant Guru.”

It’s not just altruistic. “The grant work that we do has consistently grown the other types

of work that we do,” McGough says. That can be market assessment, fleet planning analysis, procurement and infrastructure development, new vehicle and engine certification support, public relations, program management and, of course, event production. As you see.

Clean Energy Fuels reported that its long-time customer Raven Transport is adding 115 liquefied natural gas-fueled Peterbilt Model 579 sleeper tractors to its fleet “to haul goods for a leading consumer packaged goods com-pany.” Clean Energy (Booth 1629) said it will support the Raven fleet by opening four new truck-friendly LNG fueling stations.

The Peterbilt trac-tors were purchased

from the Rush Truck Center in Jacksonville, Fla. Custom Vehicle Solutions, also a Rush Enter-prises company, completed the installation of LNG fuel systems from Chart Industries (Booth 727) purchased through Clean Energy’s tank pricing program.

“Raven is rising to the challenge to move our

customers’ goods with clean-burning fuel,” said Raven COO Stephen Silverman.

The new fleet “will operate on irregular routes originating from production plants and distribu-tion centers in the Southeast and is forecasted to consume approximately 2.4 million additional DGEs of LNG annually,” Clean Energy said.

The fuel provider says it will make LNG avail-able to Raven at new outlets in Atlanta, in Pearl, Miss., and in Birmingham and Theodore, Ala.

“The natural gas fueling ecology continues to strengthen as America’s largest shippers and their logistics companies transition to natural gas,” said Clean Energy VP Chad Lindholm. “It becomes increasingly feasible for fleets hauling in the Southeast and beyond to make the switch to natural gas,” he said.

“Transport will continue to drive adoption of alternative fuels, impacting the entire trans-portation industry,” said Rush chairman, CEO and president Rusty Rush.

Peterbilt (Booth 136) announced availability of the Model 579 (and 567) tractor with LNG power at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville this past March.

Landi Renzo USA promises to release its electronic pressure regulator for natural gas vehicles to the U.S. market. Separately, Landi reports California Air Resources Board certi-fication of its dedicated-compressed natural gas system for Ford F-250/350 series trucks with the 6.2-liter engine for 2016.

“We are releasing a piece of innovative technology that will deliver immediate and tangible benefits to our customers by virtu-ally eliminating several limitations affecting the conventional systems,” Landi Renzo USA engineering VP Marco Genova says of the EPR.

“Customers will be pleased with the new standard of performance achievable with the electronic pressure regulator,” he said, “in particular during cold engine starts at very low ambient temperature, with the compact packaging and the level of integra-tion achievable with the engine and vehicle control system.”

The EPR features electronic control of optimal output pressure depending on specific engine and/or ambient conditions, compatibility with the flow rates required for heavy duty applications, ambient tem-perature operation with no heating required, and closed loop control of output pressure with high dynamic response and no perfor-mance drift.

The EPR can improve vehicle range, Landi says – possibly allowing for more economical fuel cylinder packages.

Landi will phase in the new EPR, starting with Ford F-450/550 series vehicles with the 6.8-liter V-10.

Approval of the Ford F-250/350 with 6.2-liter engine for 2016 allows Landi to provide a less-than-14,000-pound GVWR pickup and cab chassis solution in CARB-regulated states, augmenting a product line-up that already includes Ford F-450/550, F-650, E-450 cutaway, and F-53/59 stripped chas-sis vehicles, and multiple GM vehicles with the 6.8-liter engine. Landi is at Booth 737.

Penske Truck Leasing is showing a CNG-fueled Freightliner Cascadia tractor in Booth 626, one of about 250 in the company’s fleet.

Penske also counts approximately 128 airport and parking facility buses it maintains under contract, and a fleet of some two dozen propane autogas-powered delivery vehicle it maintains for Alpha Baking in Chicago.

Penske celebrated Earth Day last month at a

new Trillium CNG (Booth 605) fueling station in Pottsville, Pa. A total of 23 Penske-leased CNG trucks will be fueled by Penske Logistics, NFI and Wegmans at the facility.

All-told, Penske claims an alt fuel fleet of some 500 vehicles.

“All of the services we offer under full service lease we also offer under a maintenance agree-ment even though the customer owns the asset,” explains Drew Cullen, senior fuels and facilities services VP at Penske.

Approximately 20 Penske locations are out-fitted for NGV maintenance, Cullen says. Pen-ske technicians are trained alongside OEM and vehicle upfitter personnel, and through organi-zations including the Las Vegas-based Natural Gas Vehicle Institute (Booth 845).

Cullen is slated to participate in the Global Energy and the North American Clean Transporta-tion Market executive roundtable general session beginning at 8:30 this morning.

The new G-series line of CNG- or propane autogas-powered, cab-forward trucks by Southern California’s Greenkraft is being promoted by Superior Transportation Solu-tions at Booth 102. The trucks are available with 6- or 8-liter GM engines, with CNG fuel capacities ranging from 20 to 60 GGEs. Austin-based STS is Greenkraft’s exclusive distributor for Texas.

On show here is a unique demonstrator vehicle with gasoline, propane and CNG fuel systems – effectively a tri-fuel.

Greenkraft is also preparing a plug-in hybrid electric offering with propane autogas or CNG for range extension.

Nissan Sponsors Today’s Ride-and-DriveNissan is sponsoring the ACT Expo 2015 ride-and-drive, which runs this afternoon from noon to 3pm. To participate, follow the signs and go down the escalators near the registration desk in Hall B. Exit the glass doors on the right leading to Ceremonial Drive and stop at the check-in table to present your driver’s license and get a wrist band.

Nissan introduced the 100% battery electric Nissan Leaf in December 2010. It is now the world’s best-selling all- electric vehicle.

Leaf provides “an exceptional value proposition due to zero spending on gas, lower operating and maintenance costs and a starting price after tax incentives competitive with a comparable gas-powered car,” Nissan says.

The 75,000th Nissan Leaf in the United States was deliv-ered in March.

Nissan is at Booth 1237.
