    The worlds largest population of feeding Humpback whales is found offNewfoundlandandLabrador.

    LearnabouttheinnerworkingsofaHumpbackwhalebyexaminingits50-footskeletonondisplayattheKingsPointHumpbackWhalePavilion.

    TheSpermwhaleissaidtobethelargesttoothedmammalintheworld,andtohavetheheaviestbraininalltheanimalkingdom.Seeits43-footskeletonfirsthandattheTritonSpermWhalePavilion.

    In 1978, residents of Springdale helped save five Humpback whales and aNarwhaltrappedinthepackiceofHallsBay.

    ifwhalewatchingissomethingyoureinterestedin,dontmissoutonsomeofthefinesttheworldhastooffer.Twenty-two species of whales can be found along the coast of Central

    Newfoundland,theHumpbackandtheMinkebeingthemostcommon.Andthereareafewofourfriendsthatareanxioustomeetyou.Five thousandHumpbacks visit ourwaters fromMay to September. From the

    shores of Terra Nova National Park to the coastal reaches of theGreatWhaleCoast,thesemightymammalswilltakeyourbreathaway.Whetheryouviewthemwithinarmsreachbykayakorfromonboardanorganizedboattour,youresuretodelightinthenaturalbeautyofthesemassivecreaturesofthesea.

    huMPBACk whAlesarriveinNewfoundlandinearly springon theiryearlymigration fromtheCaribbean.Itsalargewhalewithlong,white-sidedflipperswhichareabout1/3oftheirbodylength. They can grow to be over 12 metreslongandweighmorethan35tonnes.

    MiNke whAles are the smallest of the baleenwhalesandareacommonsightinthebaysofNewfoundland in summer and early fall whentheycomeintofeedoncapelin,mackerelandherring.Minkesweighonlyaround7tonnesandmeasure8m in length. Theyareblackon topwith small side flippers that have a little whiteon them, a completelywhite belly and a tall,hookeddorsalfin.

    fiN whAles are second only in size to Bluewhales,measuring up to 20m andweighingupto40tonnes.Theyarealsobaleenwhales.A largewhalewithastreamlined,blackbackand long, curved dorsal fin, they have smallpointedsideflippersandawhitebelly.

    Pilot (Pot heAd) whAles are best seen insummer and early fall. These toothed whalesmaybeingroups,calledpods,ofupto100.Theyareblackwithlongdorsalfinsandhaveroundedpot-shaped heads. They are relatively small,measuringaround5mandweighing3tonnes.

    white-BeAked dolPhiNs can often beconfused with the White-Sided dolphin. Theycangrowupto2.7mlongandweighupto200kg.Theyhaveshortwhitebeaksanddarkgreybodieswithlightergreyandwhitepatchesthatstraddle theirback in frontofandbehindthedorsalfin.

    white-sided dolPhiNs are locally know assquid-houndsorjumpers,theylovetoplayandjumpoutofthewater.Theyhaveblackordarkgreybackswithwhitebelliesandagreybandrunningtheirlength.Thealsohavetwoovalpatchesbehind theirdorsal fin thatarecreamyoryellow.

    hArBour PorPoises are sometimes calledpuffin pigs because of the grunting soundstheymakewhenbreathing.Theyareverysmall,measuringonlyafewmetresandweighinglessthan50kg.Femalesareoften largerthanthemales. Theyhavegrey skinwith specklesandroundedheadswithnobeaks.Theyhavesmallblackflippersandatriangulardorsalfin.

    whalesareimportantandplentifulanimals inNewfoundlandandLabradorscoastalenvironment.As it is in theobservationofallwildlifebehaviour, it isimportanttoallowthewhaletocontrolanyinteraction.Iftheanimaliscurious,itwillapproachavessel.Ifitisdisturbedbyourpresence,itwillmoveaway.Thekeytoconductaroundwhalesistorecognizethattheyarewildanimalsthat

    mustrest,forage,feed,socializeandcompleteotherlifeprocessestosurvive.Anyactivitybyavesselthatdisturbsorpreventsanimalsfromcompletinglifeprocessesrepresentsathreattotheconservationandsurvivalofthesemajesticcreatures.

Wearing a bell on yourshoeorbackpack isonewaytodeterencounters.Ifyoudospotablackbearonyourtrip,remaincalmandleavetheareaslowly-neverrun.Coyotes:Coyotesarebecomingmoreprevalent throughout the island.Whiletheyareusuallyshyanimalsthatavoidhumancontact,theyhavebeenknowntoexpandtheirterritorialrangeduringthe last few years. Like all wildlife, itsbest to keepyourdistanceandavoidattractingthemwithfood.Moose: Whiletheyarenotnativetothisprovince,moosehavecertainlythrivedsincetheirintroductiontotheisland.
