Hiking trailEnjoy an exhilarating walk across Reigate Hill and learn how man has influenced the history on the hill. Stroll through flower-sprinkled grasslands and tranquil shady woods. There are many places along the route to stop and enjoy the spectacular views across the Weald towards the South Downs.

1. From Wray Lane car park, walk west along the North Downs Way, crossing over the recently refurbished footbridge.

2. Continue to follow the North Downs Way. On your left, you’ll pass the entrance to Reigate Fort. Why not take a break and explore this military site?

3. The open area of mowed grass to your left is where a US Flying Fortress crashed into Reigate Hill on 19 March 1945.

Reigate Hill WalkRoute: Moderate

Miles: 3.3 Miles Start: Wray Lane, Reigate Hill

4. As you pass through the wooden gate, you’ll see the Inglis Memorial to your left. This is the first opportunity to experience the spectacular views towards Box Hill and Leith Hill in the West, and the South Downs in the South. Continue to follow the North Downs Way along the top of the hill. Keep an eye out for our Belted Galloway cattle that manage the chalk downland by grazing the unwanted scrub.

5. Pass through the wooden gate and continue to follow the North Downs Way until you come to a T-junction with three metal posts. Turn left onto the tarmac track and continue to follow the North Downs Way.

6. As you walk along the track, you’ll see a large white cast-iron post to your left, this is a Coal Tax post. Pass through the metal posts and head downhill, continuing along the North Downs Way. Caution: steep descent.

7. At the bottom of the hill, you’ll come to a crossroad with a fingerpost. Turn left through the wooden barrier and follow the footpath through the yew woodland. As you leave the woodland, you’ll see open chalk downland to your left. This area has recently been cleared of mature scrub that was invading the special grassland habitat. Continue to follow the path along the edge of the downland. You’ll come to waymarker post with a North Downs Ridge marker on it. Follow the arrow and go down the wooden steps.

8. At the end of the large bowl area, continue to follow the yellow waymarker arrow. At the waymarker post, stop and turn to your right - behind you is a deep depression. There used to be an entrance here to one of the many mines in Reigate Hill. The mines were dug to extract hearthstone. This was processed outside the mine entrance into small blocks, similar in size to a bar of soap. The stone was used to whiten the front door steps of people’s homes.

9. At the Y-junction, take the left fork and continue to follow the yellow arrow. You’ll see a National Trust Omega sign to your right, pass this and continue along under Park Road. Caution watch out for vehicles.

10. As the road bends to the right, turn left onto the unsurfaced track. Then almost straight away, turn sharp left and follow the blue arrow for the Millennium trail, leading up the hill.

11. Halfway up the hill you’ll see the Simpson Memorial. Why not stop for a rest? There’s a bench just off the path on the left. On a clear day, views looking towards Box Hill and Leith Hill are spectacular.

12. Pass through the wooden gate and turn right up the steps. At the top you’ll find yourself back at the Inglis Memorial, turn right through the wooden gate and follow the North Downs Way back to Wray Lane car park.

Barbecue recipeNeed some barbecue inspiration? Try Martin Dorey’s recipe for Kofta Kebabs with Tzatziki in Pittas. These are super easy to make and taste just lovely.

Mix the lamb with the cumin, coriander, thyme, sumac and seasoning. Divide into 4 and shape into 4 large long thin sausages (or 8 smaller ones) around a skewer. Before cooking drizzle a little olive oil and lemon over the kebabs. Cook them on the BBQ for at least 10 minutes each side, turning often to get a nice even brown. Meanwhile mix up the yogurt, cucumber, mint and lemon juice to make your lovely dippy sauce. When the kebabs are ready, slide off the skewer into the pitta. Put it all together with chopped up little gem lettuce and chomp it like it’s 4 am and you’re on the way home from a great night out...only this is better…

For the kebabs:• 500g of lean lamb mince • 1 tsp cumin • 1 tsp ground coriander • 1 tsp paprika • Black pepper • Lemon thyme (or thyme) • 2 tsp sumac (if you have it) • Salt and pepper

For the Tzatziki:• 200g Greek yogurt • Fresh mint leaves • Cucumber, chopped • Juice of ½ lemon

Animals and nature hazards We encourage wildlife and maintain natural surroundings where possible so please take care when walking around the site. Mole hills, rabbit holes, tree roots an uneven ground are likely to be present. Wild animals, farm animals and horses can behave unpredictably if you get too close, especially if they’re with their young – so give them plenty of space. We advise you to keep your eyes peeled and wear appropriate footwear. Find the countryside code on www.ramblers.org.uk.

Behaviour on sitePlease remember that there are other guests staying and be considerate with noise levels. If you have children with you, please remember that you are directly responsible for their supervision. Likewise, people disregarding site rules and disrupting the enjoyment of others may be asked to leave.

ComplaintsWe hope that you have a great time during your stay. If you do find something to be a cause for concern please raise it with our site staff who will in most cases be able to provide a solution and reassurance there and then. In the very rare case that the problem can’t be resolved immediately, please write to the Head of Site Operations, Experience Freedom from The Caravan and Motorhome Club, East Grinstead, West Sussex, RH19 1UA.

Nothing makes us happier than knowing that our guests are safe and sound. Whilst we take every effort to ensure that this is the case, we ask that you work with us to help implement a few sensible precautions.
