American Senior High School was ranked in the top 3% of the high schools in the nation
American Senior High School has 7 functioning academies Academy of Biomedical Careers (ABC), Academy of Hospitality and Tourism (AOHT), Academy of Information Technology (AOIT), Engineering Academy for Student Excellence (EASE), Fine Arts Academy, Law Studies Academy, and Freshman Academy
American Senior offers industry certification as a: Daycare Asst., Nursing Asst., EKG Tech., Medical Adm. Asst., Computer Automated Designer, First Responder, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop
American Senior High School has a tutorial program that consists of both faculty and student mentors
American Senior High School has received the Golden School Award for the past 13 years

WHAT MAKES OUR SCHOOL ONE OF A KIND CON’T
American Senior High Top Graduates received early acceptance to Colombia University, John Hopkins University, Brown University, and Georgia Tech to name just a few.
American Senior High School has partnered with St. Thomas University to offer Dual Enrollment Courses on Campus.
American Senior High School has ten certified college adjunct professors as part of it’s staff.
Dual enrollment courses offered are English 101 and 102, Pre-Calculus, Spanish Literature, Astronomy, Principles of Business, Theatre as Communication and Sports Administration.
Through a combination of AP/AICE/Dual Enrollment and Industry certification, a student can graduate with a year of college completed free of charge!

Curriculum Initiatives First 800 Points
Bi-weekly mini-assessments are administered in all targeted areas following District Pacing Guide. Math Bi-weekly assessments rotate from paper/pencil to computer based. Data Chats are conducted after every District and in-house mini assessment. Re-teaching focus calendar in all targeted subjects to address weakest areas identified. Weekly Subject Area Meetings: Focus on Best Strategies, Data, Webb’s Depth of Knowledge, Differentiated Instruction, Lesson Plans for Following Week.

Biology Classes rotate through GIZMO Interactive Experimental Lab. Reading, Science and Math Coaches model and provide support daily. Pullouts for students not making satisfactory progress on interim assessments. 10th grade Language Arts Students receive bi-weekly writing prompts. First time, prompt is for practice and re-teaching focus, second prompt is for a grade. Writing Camp held prior to FCAT to prepare students. Creative Writing Class created for all Level II Reading Students.

“Do Nows” focus on weak areas identified after District Interim Assessments. All FCAT/EOC courses have weekly lab time to use on-line resources. Before/afterschool tutoring in Reading, Algebra I, Geometry, Biology and SAT/ACT Prep. Saturday Success Academy in Reading 9th and 10th , Algebra I, Biology, Writing. School Wide Incentive plan created for targeted subjects.

Curriculum Initiatives Graduation Rate
Counselors meet with students every two months to go over credit history. Students are registered in adult education classes for credit recovery. (Only allowed to take 2 core classes per school year.) All seniors are required to take the ACT/SAT at least once during their senior year in order to participate in senior activities. Concordant scores are used to assist Seniors meet FCAT graduation requirement.

Senior Parent Night is conducted in the fall. Parents are provided with all graduation requirements and their child’s credit history. All juniors and seniors are placed in intensive reading that have not passed the FCAT. FCAT Retake Saturday School provided for all re-take students prior to fall test. Juniors that pass re-take part of FCAT are placed in ACT/SAT Prep class for the second semester . Students that have failed or have not yet taken their elective courses are registered in Florida Virtual School to recover elective credits.

Curriculum Initiatives Accelerated Participation/Performance
94 percent participation by all upperclassmen in accelerated courses. Increased dual enrollment participation from 35 students 2011-2012 to 240 students presently. Five of our Seven Academies offer Industry Certification. Lab time provided to prepare for industry Certification exams. Increased industry certification from 6 Subjects to 7 this year.

Students participated in 19 Advanced Placement Courses and 7 Cambridge (AICE) courses. Students attend AP Review provided by the District to prepare for end of year exams. Teachers attend Professional Development through out the year that pertain to their subject. Over 600 end of year exams taken in AP/AICE Courses.

Curriculum Initiatives Math/Reading College Readiness
All seniors are required to take the ACT/SAT and least once. ACT/SAT prep work conducted weekly in all 11th and 12th grade Mathematics and English courses. ACT/SAT tutoring is provided before and afterschool, as well as, Saturdays. Waivers provided to all seniors that are on free and reduced lunch. Students taking Math for College Reading or English IV Florida College Prep take the PERT exam. AHS is an ACT/SAT testing site.
