Welcome to AP Music Theory!

I am looking forward to working with you next year. Please complete theAP Music Theory review packet this summer. Students will receive agrade for completion of the packet and should be prepared to discuss thematerial during the first few days of class.

Before beginning the AP Music Theory curriculum, students should be ableto:

• identify and notate notes in treble"bass, alto, and tenor clef• identify and notate all major and minor key signatures• identify and notate all major and minor (3 forms) scales• identify and construct major, minor, diminished, and augmentedtriads

• identify and label triads with Roman numerals and inversionSYmbols

• identify cadences• identify Ron-chord tones

Information about the AP Music Theory exam can be found online atwww.collegeboard.com.

AP Music Theory requires students to have exceptional listening and ear-training skills. Please use the links on my classroom website to review andimprove your ear-training skills.

Have a wonderful summer! Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

LESSON 73RELATIVE MINOR KEY SIGNATURES

NATURAL MINORAll major keys have a relative minor key which uses the same key signature. The key toneof the minor key is a minor third, or 3 half steps, below the key tone of its relative major.

C Major down a minor 3rdfrom C is A

A Minor A minor and C major bothhave the same key signature.

The natural minor scale uses the key signature of the relative major scale.

LESSON 76REVIEW OF LESSONS 73-75

1, The key tone of a relative minor scale is a minor below the key tone ofits relative major scale.

2. The minor scale uses the key signature of the relative majorscale without any accidentals.

3. The harmonic minor scale raises the scale degree of a naturalminor scale step.

4. The minor is different ascending and descending.

5. The ascending version of the melodic minor scale raises the __, and scale degrees step.

6. The descending version of the minor scale is the same as the_______________ mmar.

Write the following scales:

7. A Melodic Minor (Ascending and Descending)
