WHAT TO DO ? WHAT TO SEE IN NORTH FINISTERE?
1) NORTHEAST OF BREST (1H10 BY ROAD BY CAR) LEON
COUNTRY
There is really a lot to discover in the country of León.
Count 2 to 3 days if you want to see everything.
- The castle of Kerjean on the commune of saint vougay. A
magnificent building with a park and a dovecote. The visit is paying but
it's really worth it as it is well done. We let ourselves be carried away
through the rooms in the lives of the various owners. We really liked it
and the kids too
- Santec National Forest and Dossen Beach: The forest covers 97
hectares of diverse species resistant to the maritime climate of the place.
This forest is crossed by various paths where you will cross families in walk
or athletes in training. In its central alley, a fitness trail is available to
everyone. From the "Bon Vent" Center, it will take you to the river that
borders it to the south from where, taking on your right, you can reach
the Dossen beach.
- Roscoff: Old haven of corsairs and smugglers, from where the sellers of
pink onions to England (the johnnies). Roscoff, approved small city of
character has retained its architectural heritage of the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries while stone. For a breathtaking view of the bay (the
ports, the island of batz ...) drive up to the chapel ste Barbe. You will find
very good gourmet restaurants (The rakham, the Britanny or the foam of
the days) but also more classic restaurants of an excellent quality / price
ratio (The breeze Blades or the trade winds located in front of the port).
If you like Asian food I recommend Halong Bay, one of the best in the
department. Finally for a pancake, you have the creperie of the post office
or the creperie The candlemaker. 18
- The island of Batz: right in front of Roscoff (access by boat). No need
to book, they add boats if there are too many people. The island is really
a gem with a micro climate. We go there often, the last time end of
October 2017 for a cousinade. To go around the island, count one day. I
really like the south-east part of the island along the trail then through
the beach, the blokaus and finally the botanical garden Georges Delaselle
(entry fee). You can admire the port of Roscoff seen from the sea and
continuing to the northeast, all small islands of Morlaix Bay that arise at
low tide. To the north, you will find fields including potatoes known as
that of Noirmoutiers. You may also be able to cross horses in freedom. To
the west of the island you can admire the lighthouse of the island and the
snake's hole place of a legend: Saint pol would have come on the island
and delivered the inhabitants of a terrible dragon by throwing it into the
snake's hole.
- Saint pol de leon with its two steeples at the top and bottom of the
main street. You'll find the apple-pie restaurant that's gone up a notch
since I went there in 2012. 2 much more affordable restaurants we liked.
Restaurant "In the grand'rue": Little choice but in return, fresh food for a
very reasonable price. The other restaurant "the bucail": There too a very
good value for money and a curiosity with a tree in the middle of the
restaurant.
- Carantec: A pretty little town but especially a peninsula: The island
callot. You can get there on foot or by car, but you have to pay attention
to the tides because we are already back on the ground once the wheels in
the water and another time barefoot shoes in hand. As for the
restaurant, we made 2. The shelter of the fisherman in front of the island
callot, classic cuisine of fresh fish but especially the restaurant of Patrick
Jeffroy, one of the most famous chefs of Finistère. If the gastronomic
cuisine is very good, the restaurant is also worth visiting for its beautiful
setting: A huge bay window overlooking a creek. It's fabulously beautiful. 19
Finally, if you like history, go visit the bull castle in the middle of the bay
of Morlaix (Old prison built by Vauban, it was the prison of aristocrats,
mountaineers and Girondins)
- If you have time to go down to Morlaix taking the coastal road that will
allow you to skirt the Bay of Morlaix and enter the city directly into the
city center where you will arrive on the very impressive viaduct.
20
1) IN THE NORTH BRIGNOGAN KERLOUAN AND THE ABERS
(45 MINUTES IN CARS)
- Brignogan is an old seaside town. I advise you to park either at the
"small Nice" or the side of the campground of the coast legends. Then you
can go a little way along the coast to the semaphore. You will see large
rounded rocks. On your way back, with your car, go inside through the
narrow streets and admire the houses built around or even leaning
against huge rocks that seem to have fallen from the sky into the gardens.
It's really unique. 2 restaurants to advise you. "The hotel of the sea" and
the restaurant "La Corniche" located in the heart of the bay facing the
sea. We never tire of the view from the large bay window.
- A little further west, along the coast, stop in the village of Ménéham
in the town of Kerlouan. Sometimes refuges customs officers, sometimes
fishing village, Ménéham is a real curiosity in the region with its chapel in
the middle of the rocks. Inside, you can also watch a video on the history
of Ménéham. Legend has it that many ships stranded on the coast of the
pagan country. Inhabitants would have been responsible for these
accidents because they were walking on the dunes at night, a lantern in
hand, attracting the boats to the coast where they ran aground then ...
- A little further to the west, you will find the region of abers with the
lighthouse of the virgin island. The highest lighthouse in Europe and one of
the highest in the world with its 82 meters and 397 steps. Accessible by
boat. Good luck !
21
1) TO THE WEST THE CONQUET AND POINTE
SAINT MATHIEU (40 MINUTES BY CAR)
- First stop: The lighthouse of the “petit minou”. You will be able to
admire the magnificent sight on the harbor of Brest and the Gully.
Attention it is not easy to find but it is worth seeing.
- Second stop; the fort of Bertheaume. Built on an island, it allowed
to control the entry of the bay of Brest by enemy boats. It is nowadays a
place of entertainment for adventurers adept of thrills; My big daughter
went zip-lining over the sea. She loved it.
- Le Conquet: the pretty fishing port from where you can take the boat
to the islands of Molène and Ouessant.
- On the other side of the harbor, go around the peninsula of
Kermorvan. If you are in the right season, you can pick blackberries that
grow in large quantities. You can also have a breathtaking view of the
sandy white beach.
- Finally, the st Mathieu st: You have a very nice walk from the chapel
and down the path along the cliff. The path is very wide and practicable.
- If you have time to go north to Porspoder, you will find the peninsula of
St. Laurent accessible on foot but often very windy Portsall and fishing
port infamous for the sinking of the Amoco Cadiz. The anchor of the boat
has remained at the port.
22
1) SOUTH WEST THE CROZON MORGAT NEARBY
(1H20 BY CAR)
You leave Brest direction Quimper. Take the exit indicated Crozon at the
height of the Faou.
- Térénez Bridge: it was redone entirely because the old one had
concrete sickness. You can park because there is the possibility of access
for pedestrians.
- Arrived in Crozon which does not present tourist interest, to take north
to the right towards Roscanvel. Once past Roscanvel and the long island
(military zone for nuclear submarines), stop at the tip of the Spanish.
You can admire the port of Brest and all the harbor.
- Go back down to Camaret-sur-mer: You will be able to see the
Vauban tower there and to restore there or to eat a crepe or an ice
cream in season.
- Lagatjar Megalithic Alignments
- The tip of the penhir and piles of peas
- the port of morgat
- the cape of the “chevre” goat
- the menez hom on the commune of plomodiern culminates to 330
meters. If the weather is nice, you can see paragliders there. In the
commune of Plomodiern is the inn of glazicks. It is a very famous gourmet
restaurant.
- Locronan: the typical Breton village very touristy. To see all year but
especially at Christmas because the illuminations are absolutely beautiful.
For the record, scenes from the movie "les chouans" with Philippe Noiret
and Sophie Marceau were filmed on the village square.
It recognizes the church, the houses and the well. You can also buy one of
the best kouign amann department.
- Forest of Cranou,
23
2) IF YOU WANT TO GO FARTHER, CONTACT ME I WILL GIVE YOU
ADVICE ON THE PLACES TO SEE
- SOUTH FINISTERE: bay of Douarnenez, point of the van, bay of dead
tip of the Raz, Audierne, Pouldreuzic (paté hénaff and cider kerné),
Quimper, the island Tudy, Benodet, Fouesnant, Concarneau, Pont aven ...
- East of Finistere Forest Huelgoat Lake Drennec
- THE MORBIHAN
- THE COTES D'ARMOR
24
Where to eat
CREPES IN BREST
I RECOMMEND THE CREPERIE COATAUDON. THEY MAKE FRESH
CREPES AND ROLLS ALL DAY ON LARGE CANDLE MANES. THERE IS
ALL THE TIME OF THE PASSAGE AND PERSONALLY WE BUY AT
LEAST 1 TIME PER WEEK.
ADDRESS: 3 RUE GENERAL PAULET
+332-98-41-52-58.
OPEN FROM 7 AM TO 7 PM FROM MONDAY TO SATURDAY.
Our little hearts (coups de coeur)....
Our favorite restaurants and shops in Brest 1) ON THE PORT OF COMMERCE (QUAI de la douane AND QUAI ERIC
TABARLY)
THERE ARE MANY RESTAURANTS (TEX MEX, MEAT, FISH,
TRADITIONAL ...). THERE ARE MANY FREE PARKINGS. 25
I GIVE YOU OUR 5 PREFERES
THE HOUSE OF THE OCEAN (la maison de l’ocean)
TRADITIONAL RESTAURANT OF FISH AND SEAFOOD
2 QUAI de la douane +332-98-80-44-84. They even make seafood
trays to take. THIS IS A TYPICAL RESTAURANT OF FISH AND SEAFOOD.
THE BROTHERS OF THE COAST (les freres de la cote)
ANOTHER RESTAURANT OF FISH WITH A KITCHEN MUCH MORE
WORKED BASED ON SPICES:
ON THE PORT OF COMMERCE ALSO. I REMEMBER STILL A SEMI-
COOKED FISH DUMET OF ESPADON AND TUNA. A DELICE. THE DECO
IS VERY SYMPA BASED ON WOOD. ON PRINT TO FIND IN A BOAT.
IF YOU PREFER THE MEAT GRILLED WITH WOOD FIRE, YOU HAVE THE
BEEF ON THE DOCK, IT IS THE ONLY ON BREST AND IT IS ALSO VERY
GOOD.
THE BASE (la base)
A MIXED BETWEEN LAND AND SEA ON THE QUAI ERIC TABARLY. IT
IS LOCATED FACING THE MARINA. SYMPA FOR A BEGINNING OF THE
EVENING, MORE ANIME THAN THE FIRST 3, THE RESTAURANT "THE
BASE" HAS A HUGE CELLAR IN WHISKEY. COTE TABLE, THEY OFFER
PINE, GAMBAS OR NUTS SKINS OF ST JACQUES OF VERY GOOD
QUALITY. 2 BEMOLS: THE TRIM AND NOTE A LITTLE HIGH. YOU PAY A
LITTLE LOCATION.
26
FINALLY THE LATEST WE HAVE TESTED:
THE BRASSERIE LE CARRE
26 QUAI de la douane TEL +332 29 61 10 00
The restaurant has a brasserie only the name. It's a semi gastro. Starter /
main course / dessert for 19.90 euros for lunch. Beware it's fresh and
very good but there is no choice. In the evening count a menu for 26,90
€ with 3 to 4 choices per dish but supplements for some dishes (choice of
oysters, foie gras, St Jacques, filet of beef, mellow chocolate valrona).
Remember to book a table upstairs for the harbor view
Always on the commercial port, you will also find the crab hammer, an
institution in Brest. As the name says you have a hammer, a wooden
board, a crab and a bucket.
2 creperies that we have not tested but with good returns "pancake
latitude" copious pancakes and "the world of pancakes" a priori pretty
good but a little more expensive.
For the shops of the commercial port
• the "King of Brittany" 12 quai de la Douane. A big shop with a lot of
Breton products
• Irish counter 32 Customs dock
27
2) IN THE CITY CENTER OF BREST
FOR MIDI ONLY,
WE RECOMMEND “l’o à la bouche”
ADDRESS: 12 RUE DE SIAM TEL +332 98 46 05 52 ATTENTION THIS
IS NOT IN THE PORT OF COMMERCE BUT IN BOTTOM OF THE STREET
OF SIAM A side of the CASTLE AND TELEPHERIQUE. FOR 16,40
EUROS, THE RESTAURANT PROPOSES ENTRY / FLAT / DESSERT.
YOU WILL FIND IN THE MENU MUSSELS / FRIES DURING THE SEASON,
A BURGER HOUSE ALWAYS WITH FRESH FRUITS, MEAT OR FISH. THE
DIFFERENCE WITH RETAURANTS JUST SIDE THAT ARE A LITTLE
CHEAPER, IT IS THAT THE DISHES ARE KITCHEN, MORE
ELABORATED, WITH REAL FRENCH FRIES. WE GO AT LEAST 2
THURSDAY PER MONTH. IN THE EVENING, THE EVENING, THE MENU
IS MORE EXPENSIVE AND A LITTLE LESS. IT IS PREFERABLE TO GO
ON THE PORT OF COMMERCE.
ALWAYS FOR THE MORNING, WE ALSO ADVISE YOU THE
RESTAURANT “ autour du chateu” AROUND THE CASTLE
ADDRESS: 3 FREE FRENCH BOULEVARD FACING THE CASTLE OF
BREST NOT FAR FROM THE RESTAURANT THE O TO THE MOUTH.
TELEPHONE +332-98-80-43-47.
A GOOD SURPRISE FOR THIS RESTAURANT THE MENU OF THE MIDI IS
A 15 EUROS ENTRY / FLAT / DESSERT.UNE KITCHEN WITH FRESH
PRODUCTS AND 3 CHOICES FOR EACH FLAT. THE LOCATION IS VERY
PRETTY FACING THE CASTLE AND THE RESTAURANT IS VERY CLEAN
INCLUDING THE TOILETS.
28
