Cumbria

In the last month, I have found myself driving all over the place. Sometimes life is like that, isn’t it? I’ve been out on the West Coast twice. I have been to Kirby Stephen. I have been to Keswick, and Arnside...to Barrow and Silecroft. I have been through the middle of the Lakes, and - come to think of it - I have been to Longtown as well! But, when you are ‘on a mission’, it is easy to travel ‘fast and far’ without seeing very much, isn’t it? If I am honest, it has all been a bit of a blur!

One phenomenon that has not been a blur in Cumbria, has been the exhibition, shot by a pho-tographer called Ian Lawson, called ‘A Portrait of Lakeland’, which has been running at Rheged, since the 14th February 2015. The images involved a look at the relationship between the Herdwick, the fell farmers who breed them, and the landscape which we are blessed to drive through from day to day, and from week to week.

Right at the start of the exhibition, there is a piece of writing by Ian Lawson, in which he says, ‘In a technological age, the life of a Herdwick shepherd can seem anachronistic.’ But, he goes on to say that ‘5 years of observing these men and women at work’, has taught him that ‘this is not so’... because, ‘Theirs is not a life lived out of time, but rather one deeply attuned to the rhythms underpinning our very existence on this planet.’

The images in Ian Lawson’s exhibition are ‘still’. They stand, and speak, as portraits of a place we all know and love. As I looked at them...the familiar paths, and places, and animals revealed themselves afresh to me, and left me slightly dizzy. Looking around, I could see I was not alone. There were lots of people from Cumbria there, all of them slightly dazed, from the experience of looking at our world through another person’s loving eyes. I visited the exhibition twice...I had to in order to try and get my head around it...and ‘see’ it!When you are ‘on a mission’, it is easy to travel ‘fast and far’ without ‘seeing’ very much. In life, it is more efficient to travel without other people... because they can make things more complicated, can’t they?.... especially if they ‘see’ things differently to you. But we need to travel with other people, because sometimes they see things more beautifully than we do...and more accurately. Isn’t it a gift to have to slow down, and see things through the eyes of another person? We must make time to do it, if we want to live rich lives rather than simply full ones!Ian Lawson wrote this about the Herdwick sheep - ‘I have often asked myself what it is about the Herdwick breed that I admire so much... their soul searching eyes...their friendly faces... their woolly coats......their stolid resignation?’ I am not sure anyone who went to the exhibition in Rheged will ever look at these animals in the same way again! Ian Lawson wrote – ‘In the mountains of the Duddon, Wasdale, Eskdale, Buttermere and Borrowdale the stoical Herdwick always looks just right...head to the wind in the foulest weather.’ I suspect, I am not alone in knowing exactly what he means. I also suspect, that I needed him to say those things for me, so I could know them for myself! As we move into spring this year, I am going to try and ‘see’ more things through other people’s eyes. I am also going to try and remember that God ‘sees’ all this...the raindrops and the sunshine...and the wire-like wool on the Herdwick’s face. He sees it because he made it...and he loves it all, enough to share it with us, despite our complications. Here’s to Ian Lawson...to Cumbria...its sheep...and to our creative God, who invites us to travel with him...and to be our shepherd as we go!

Enjoy!.....Philip

SUNDAY SCHOOL: Sunday School runs on the fir st and third Sundays of the month at 9.30 in All Saints Church, Calthwaite….it is a growing group where your child would be most welcome.

WWWW…? Has your teen thought about joining WWWW…? The gr oup is r un by local Anglicans and Methodists, and aims to help secondary school aged people grow in their Christian faith….. it happens on the first and third Friday of each month, at 16 Laikin View, Calthwaite between 7.30- 9.00pm.

UPDATE ON PLANS FOR HEATING SYSTEM RENEWAL IN HESKET - The Task Team in Hesket have made recommendations to the Parish Church Council. Fund raising ideas are coming together…..and some brilliant events are in the pipeline. Watch this space! Sunday Worship has returned to the church…

UPDATE ON THE MISSION COMMUNITY PLANNING PROCESS: Consultations on the Mission Community proposals for our area are now complete. What has been proposed is that the Penrith area will be divided into four. Each area will have a Mission Community Leader (MCL) who will support the ministry of Local Church Leaders (LCLs). The LCLs will be based in each of our existing churches. It is hoped that a central office for all four Mis-sion Communities will open in Penrith. When the senior ecumenical staff have approved the plan for the Penrith area, things will begin to happen on the ground.

Benefice Services – Our next Benefice ser vice will be at St James’ Chur ch Hutton, on the 31st May 2015.

Are you trying to hear what God is saying to you? If you are….help is at hand! On the 17th October 2015, in Cockermouth School, Bishop Robert will be hosting a second

‘Vocations Day’. CPAS will be there to offer workshops for people between the ages of 15 and 30. If you know anyone who might be interested, please tell them about this important

date. Later this year Bishop James’ teaching day will cover the topic of ‘What is discipleship’.

Calthwaite First Responders update Community Public Access Defibrillators (CPADS) Calthwaite First responders would like to thank the community for their continued support. As a way of giving back to the community we are still progressing with the CPADS in the area; after all we are volunteers and whilst we try and have 24/7 coverage there is a chance that we won’t be around. CPADS are essential to rural villages. When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, which is when your heart stops beating and you stop breathing, the first few minutes are vital. Each minute nothing is done for the patient the chances of survival reduce by 10%. It only takes four 4-6 minutes for irreversible damage to take place. You must start CPR immediately as a minimum and get a defibrillator on the way. By having these located in the villages, life saving equip-ment can be directly on hand in minutes. Ambulance response times are extended in our area so we really must take responsibility for our friend’s, family and neighbours. Currently there is a CPAD on Calthwaite School, Wreay School, The Dukes Head at Ar-mathwaite, one in Ainstable and finally two in Southwaite; one Northbound and one South-bound at the services. They are accessed via a code which you receive when calling 999. Let the call taker know where you are and they will give you the code for the storage cabinet. Take the defibrillator back to the patient and proceed to use it. Defibrillators are incredibly easy to use. You can use one perfectly without any prior knowledge or training. We would like to continue to place CPADs all across our area but need your help! We are looking for any ideas on how to access grants, funding or any unique fundraising ideas anyone has. We would like to provide these for the community but would really appreciate any help you have to offer. Villages that are still on our list and are without these life saving pieces of equipment include; Newton Reigny, Catterlen, Unthank, Plumpton, Ivegill, Low Hesket, High Hesket and Ai-ketgate – there are many more – everywhere should have one! Training 60,000 Cardiac arrests happen every year in the UK. This includes 12 children under the age of 12 every week. They often occur without any prior warning. 80% occur in the home which means you are most likely to perform CPR on someone you know. Do not let the first time you learn these skills be when it matters- be prepared!! We would love to share our knowledge and teach you these essential basis skills. Please get in touch if you would like a training session. Facts and Figures Calthwaite First Responders have attended hundreds of calls in the area in the last 3 years. We have participated in nearly 1000 hours of training and provided nearly 4000 hours of care to patients and family members. I personally have trained 25 new CFRs in the past two months and continue to train up to 20 people on our monthly training sessions for CFR team’s right across Cumbria. We are always looking for fun ways to increase the public’s knowledge and we recently creat-ed a “Gangnam Style CPR video which can be found on youtube! Its only short, its worth a watch – you could save a life with the basic skills shown. Thank you, Lauren Watson Team Leader of Calthwaite First Responders [email protected] 488 341
