Changes

• Shawnee Mission is going through some very serious changes this year – from iPads to copiers to grades.

• Please have patience! I will do my best to answer your questions, but I will not have an answer for all of them. Thank you!

iPads

WWV is getting iPads for every student! We are very excited to:

use less paper have new means for learning keep pace with modern teaching and

learning practices

iPads (continued)

Please do not do the following things YET: connect your child’s Apple ID to a credit card install any apps purchase accessories such as cases, ear buds,

or stylus. Please give us time to problem solve how

this will work. Please send the pink card with their Apple

ID back with your student as soon as possible.

iPads (continued)

Many of you may have concerns about iPads including: Student privacy Screen time Cyber bullying

Please communicate your concerns with me so that we can work as a team.

Curriculum

Our theme is Connecting Communities or more simply Cities.

We start locally with Westwood and branch out to Kansas City, Paris, Washington, D.C. and Tokyo.

We try to connect all areas including science, math, spelling, and reading to our Cities theme.

Please see our classroom website under documents for our Curriculum Map.

Transitional Year

3rd grade is the transition from little kid to big kid. This is a year of many firsts:

Reading to Learn vs. Learning to Read Cursive Multiplication/Division Mile Run Upper playground both recesses Real Textbooks and notebook paper Bike riding to school Standardized Testing

Second Step

We have a new program to help students understand what an active learner looks like and the traits of being a good friend.

Our weekly goals will be based on our new program. Please ask your student about the goal of the week.

Testing

We take the following tests: MAP testing – Math and Reading in the

fall and spring (maybe). The new Common Core test (formerly

the Kansas Assessment) for Math and Reading in March and April.

Dibels reading tests are done quarterly. Pentathlon math competition is taken

five times a year, but is not for a grade.

Accelerated Reader

In 3rd grade, we are working toward a point goal of eight for the first quarter.

We do not have a scheduled day or time for A.R. Your child needs to be responsible to take tests when he or she is ready.

You can access your child’s account from home to see how many A.R. tests they have taken and their scores by logging on to A.R. Renaissance Home Connect. Please see letter!

Accelerated Reader Renaissance Home Connect You can check the reading level and points for an A.R.

book by going to www.arbookfind.com.

Reading Log and Homework Third graders should read for at least 20

minutes each week night. Their reading log needs to be filled out by them every night.

A homework packet will be sent home every Friday. The spelling list will be included in this packet. They should be spending 10 minutes a night working on their homework packet.

Student Work

All graded and non-graded student work will be sent home on Mondays in students' Weekly Folders (blue and silver). Please go over the work with your child, sign the assignment sheet, and return the empty folder on Tuesday.

Grading

Grading Scale We will now have a +, ^,

- system. The percentages for each “grade” have not been established yet. I will let you know as soon as possible. Please think on an A, B, C, D, and F scale for now.

You will soon have access to your child’s grades via Skyward. Please do not panic if you see your child is missing an assignment.

Correct & Return In 3rd grade, we require

that any score 69% or below be corrected and returned.

After work is returned and graded again, the students will receive half the points missed back.

Correcting work gives your child a chance to improve his or her grades and learn from his or her mistakes.

Class Rules

We have 2 rules: Self Control and Respect.Students who are struggling with either rule will pull a ticket and follow the consequences.

0 tickets = Earn a python point 1 ticket = Walk 1 lap at recess 2 tickets = Walk 3 laps at recess 3 tickets = Walk 3 laps at recess and fill out a think

sheet after school. If a student earns five or more python points in a week, they earn a reward. The number of python points they have to earn in a week goes up each quarter.

The Self Reliant Child

Both third grade teachers are committed to helping students help themselves. Students are to be responsible for their own actions and work.

Expectations

I am a “guide on the side” – meaning I am here to help your student become independent. This means that students will be EXPECTED to:

- handle minor friendship issues

- complete their work on time

- listen to directions and follow them

- do their own work

- think for themselves

Help Us Create Independent Students In order to succeed in teaching self reliance and

independence, we need your help! There are 2 large at home projects this year

(Tree Diary Report and Monument Report). They are to be completed by the students!! You may edit their work for grammar and spelling ONLY.

The most important slide in the PowerPoint! Do not “rescue” your child. Third grade

consequences are designed to help promote independence.

Example: If you notice your child left their reading

log on the kitchen table, do not bring it to school.

General Information

If your student is too sick for recess, they are too sick for school. No exceptions.

Birthdays—There are to be no birthday treats sent with your children. We are working on healthy eating and active lifestyles.
