Welcome to Bay State College Where Your Success Matters and Boston’s Back Bay is our Campus
We’re excited to get you onto campus and meet you!
This guide is here to help you plan for your departure and know
what to expect upon arrival. Whether your beginning your studies
with TLC or directly starting your degree program at Bay State
College, you not only have this guide to assist you but a team of on
campus staff members who are eager to help.
As you move through this guide, please don’t hesitate to reach out

plan and prepare for every step of your arrival.

Before you leave… Here are a few things to consider
Pocket Money
We recommend that you budget $80-$100 for every week of your
program. This should be enough for personal expenses, laundry and
local travel. Don’t carry large amounts of cash at one time but
instead, use traveler's checks. There are a number of banks within
walking distance that we can help you find.

Clothing
New England weather and Boston in specific can differ drastically
day-to-day. In the winter months (December through late March) a
heavy jacket, gloves and a hat are recommended. Snow
accumulation varies but a waterproof pair of boots will help keep you
warm. In the spring, Boston receives a fair amount of rain and stays
damp and cool through mid June. Summer (late June through mid
September) is often warm and humid. Students will be comfortable
in shorts and short sleeved shirts. Finally, autumn fluctuates the
most in Boston. Long pants, sweaters and a jacket are reccomended.
Electrical current
Standard voltage is 120 volts. To make
sure that you are able to use all of your
electrical appliances bring an adapter.
Cell phones
There is a Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Apple
Store and T-Mobile all located within
walking distance to Bay State College

When you Arrive Arriving in a foreign airport can be overwhelming, especially after a long day(s) of traveling. Here’s some help so that it’s not too intimidating...
Transportation from the Airport
Our onsite English Learning Center (TLC) uses a shuttle system to
transport students. Here is a link to the airport transportation request

nsfer_2013.pdf. The cost is $100 for airport transportation in
Boston. Please note that in order to arrange for an airport pickup, form
needs to be completed at least one week prior to arrival.
Taxis
A taxi from Boston’s Logan Airport is much cheaper and easy to take.
The cab stand is well-marked located at the exit to baggage claim.
Inform the driver that you are going to 122 Commonwealth Ave in
Boston. The cab should cost you roughly $25 (without tip).

Again, we know this process can be a bit scary. Do not hesitate to ask airport staff for help or call Bay State at 617 217-9000.
Your First Day What to expect from Orientation
As an International Student, you’ll participate in both an Orientation for all
International Students as well as Bay State College’s traditional First Year Experience
Day 1: You’ll do the following
• Meet with the Director of International Student Services and be introduced to your
advisor, the Dean of Students and other key staff members
• Tour the campus and school facilities
• Take a Math Placement Test and register for your classes
• Review of the Bay State Business Center and payments schedule. Students should
be prepared to make final payments at this time is applicable
• Participate in an afternoon group activity that introduces you to Boston!
Day 2: You’ll participate in Bay State’s First Year Experience
• Meet other BSC students
• Participate in break-out sessions that are specific to your major
• Have the opportunity to ask your advisor academic questions regarding your
classes and major

Insurance (if not taking BSC’s)
3. Signed I-20
4. Remaining payments (if applicable)
School Facilities Bookstore Textbooks are available at the Bay State College Bookstore located at 31 St James, on the first floor. College merchandise and logo-wear can be purchased at the Bookstore as well Computer Labs Bay State College has computer labs at 31 St James Avenue (rooms 226 and 227 and within the Library), which are available for student use. If living on campus, each residence hall is equipped with a bank of computers Student Lounges A large space where you and your peers can relax, chat and use free Wi-Fi. There are three lounges on campus as well as a lounge within each residence hall
Dining Hall
Those living on campus are automatically signed up to receive 32 meals per week. Dining
options also available to those living off-campus and all students can grab a bite to eat for only
$5 per visit
Student Activities
The Office of International Student Services will host a variety of social events throughout each
term while the Department of Student Activities houses a number of college organizations

Local Information Transportation Boston’s subway (also known as “the T”) has multiple stops and lines near Bay State’s campus. The closest stops are: Green Line: Copley or Arlington stops Orange Line: Back Bay Station Banks and Post Office There are a number of different Bank branches around the college. The most popular and convenient are Bank of America, TD Bank and Citibank. There is also a US Postal office located within a 5 minute walking distance from campus Restaurants and Cafes Boston’s Back Bay is known for it’s numerous restaurants and local cafes. These are all within a 1 minute walk of campus and many of them are housed within Bay State’s buildings. Most cafes have free wireless internet and a place for you to relax with friends or do homework
Department Stores and Supermarkets
Newbury St is lined with famous shops and designers as well as some larger department stores.
Newbury St is a 1 minute walk from our residence halls. There’s also a larger supermarket as well as
smaller food shops within a 5 minute walk of campus

Cost of Living Sandwiches: $5.00-$8.00

The Basics….
On Campus Housing
Your dorm room will come equipped with: • A twin bed and pillow • A desk and desk chair • A bureau for clothing
You should bring: • Sheets and bedding (the mattress is a regular
sized twin mattress) • TV and mini fridge if you’d like one (we’ll also
help you coordinate with your roommates prior to arrival to see who could like to bring what)
• Posters for the wall if you’d like to decorate

hall that has bedding and room items
Health and Safety Medical Care* Although Bay State College does not have an on-campus health center, we are located in an area which provides students with a variety of healthcare options. It is highly advisable that students contact their health insurance provider prior to arriving on campus to discuss which facilities are covered and select a primary care physician in the immediate area. Beth Israel Walk-in Clinic - 330 Brookline Ave, Boston Harvard Vanguard Medical Center - 165 Dartmouth St, Boston Mass General Clinic - 15 Parkman St, Boston * These locations can help if you’re sick, have the flu and/or if you’re more seriously injured Health Insurance Under the provisions of Chapter 23, Section 22, of the 1988 Massachusetts Health Security Act, each institution of higher education MUST require students taking nine or more credits to participate in the student health insurance program or submit waiver information showing participation in a health insurance program with comparable coverage. For additional information please visit Bay State College’s website. Safety The Back Bay is primarily a residential area in Boston. For this reason it is extremely safe and well-lit at night. We recommend that students always however, walk with a friend if walking at night and that you lock your doors in the residence hall and don’t leave valuable belongings in the student lounges and computer labs

Laws and BSC Rules Laws • No one under the age of 21 in the US may buy or consume alcohol. It is also against the law to
purchase alcohol for anyone that is under the age of 21. • Driving under the influence of alcohol is a very serious crime • Buying, selling and using drugs is also illegal • Smoking is prohibited in all Massachusetts restaurants, cafes and bars BSC Rules • Alcohol is prohibited in all campus buildings including the residence halls • Smoking is also prohibited in all campus buildings and on the fire escapes of the residence halls • If you leave BSC, the government has the right to take away your student VISA and require you to
return home • You must attend all classes in order to maintain your I-20 and student VISA • If you commit a criminal crime, you will be asked to leave the college, US authorities will be notified
and you will be asked to leave the country
