Pastor’s Note:
GAMES AND CANDY
My fondest memories of the week
after Christmas revolve around
family. In those days the Christmas
break was barely more than a week
long, but we used the time to our advantage. It was a
time for family games, Christmas candy, and lots of
laughter. Sometimes our activities took us outside to
the snow. Occasionally, we would play basketball in
the barn, which worked pretty well as a gym with its
high beams and roof. But my best memories were of
playing board games at the kitchen table. These games
would include all members of the family.
Often Santa would bring to our family ‘group’
gifts as well as individual items. Those were the gifts
that were meant for the whole family. By design, we
were called to play together.
Why are those memories so significant to me? I
know that in playing games, I learned both teamwork
and good sportsmanship. I also cherished belonging to
a group and being accepted as someone who belonged.
Belonging and knowing we belong are very
important aspects of personal development. I’ve
learned that not only as kids, but also as adults, we
need to be reminded that there is a place for us at the
table. Some kind of bond, a family connection or a
willingness of others to include, makes a major
difference in our lives. It’s a lesson that needs to be
learned over and over.
As for the Christmas candy, I didn’t learn any
great lessons from that. But it was good! Still is.
MONDAYS AT ST. CLARE’S
Each Monday we celebrate our parish Mass at 9:30
a.m., instead of in our own chapel. All in the parish are
invited to join us. You’ll find the chapel right inside the
main entrance.
THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH
OFFICE CLOSED
Blessed John parish offices will
close at noon on Tuesday,
December 31. And, of course, it
will be closed on January 1, 2014,
re-opening on Thursday morning.
CHRISTMAS THANK YOU
A big thank you to all who have helped in so many ways
with our Christmas liturgies: decorating the building for
Christmas, being part of the annual Giving Tree, singing
in the various music groups or playing accompanying
music, assisting in liturgical ministries, and in being part
of our ministry of hospitality – that is everyone who helps
welcome others. Thank you for helping our parish
celebrate Christmas well this year!
PERSONAL THANKS
In my name as well as the names of all Blessed John
staff members, we want to thank you for remembering
us with cookies and treats, cards, and other forms of
Christmas well-wishing. Thank you very much. We
love being part of this parish family with you. - hw
REHEARSAL BREAK CONTINUES
Our break from music rehearsals continues this week. Rehearsals will resume the normal schedule the week of January 5.
CHRISTMAS SPECIAL FEATURE
As we continue this Christmas season we’d like you to
check out the CHRISTMAS special feature available
exclusively in the Blessed John App. We have tons of
content loaded into for kids, teens and adults. Be sure to
check it out and keep the Christmas celebration going at
home with your family.
UPDATE 23 BREAK
If you are looking for a new episode of Update 23 this
week (our parish weekly news and announcements video
blog), we are on a little break. The next new episode will
be available next Sunday, January 5.
WINTER WEATHER MASS POLICY
If and when snow days occur this winter, please know
that we cancel weekday Masses on those days when the
Perrysburg schools are canceled (not delayed). As for
Sunday Masses, they are almost never canceled!

SACRIFICIAL COMMITMENT
Since our bulletin has to go to press early, our Sunday
offering for December 21-22, as well as that of Christmas,
will be reported in a future bulletin. Thank you. And as
this year comes to an end, a profound thank you to all who
have so generously supported their parish throughout the
year.
HOLY DAY CELEBRATION
The close of the Octave of
Christmas, January 1, is the
Solemnity of the Motherhood of
Mary. This is a holy day when we
are reminded that Jesus truly came
to earth as a human being and is
‘the Word made flesh.’
There is a long-standing
tradition that this also be a time for
two-fold prayer. As we look back
at the year that has just ended, we
pray in gratitude for the blessings
received. And as we look ahead, we especially pray for
world peace.
LAST SUNDAY OF YEAR
This is the last Sunday of the calendar year, and we want
to offer a profound thank you to all who have made 2013
such an outstanding year for Blessed John XXIII Parish. It
was filled with joy and lots of blessings. We prayed
together, laughed often, supported each other at hard
times, and accepted challenges to improve. We reached
out to the unchurched and to those in need as we also used
retreats, small faith groups, Faith Alive!, and going deeper
sessions to set aflame the faith already within us.
We expanded our outreach through weekly
streaming of Mass and the new parish app. And we have
shared our faith with – and learned from – kids of all
ages! It’s been a year of celebrating the Mystery of God
beyond our reach even as we experience God’s abiding
and intimate presence.
In 2014 we will be presented with many new
opportunities and challenges as we continue our ministries
and commit ourselves to the next step in our building
project. There will be much work but also a wonderful
coming together as a team to face each new goal.
BOOK CLUB
Ever wonder how some people become enthusiastic and on fire about their relationship with God? Albert Haase, OFM, gives you the tools and kindling to prepare for the spark of God in your life – and then shows you how to fan it into flame until you are set ablaze. This book, Catching Fire, Becoming Flame, contains time-tested wisdom as an experienced spiritual
director shares the secrets of the saints. With supplemental reading suggestions and reflection questions, this eminently practical book can serve as a personal, spiritual retreat. Sign-up to be part of a group that shares insights and honors questions 3:00 p.m., Tuesdays, January 7, 21, February. 4, 11, and February 25. Sr. Anne Mary will facilitate the discussion. Order the book through Sr. Anne Mary at a discount price of $12.00. Yes, you may purchase the book if you cannot attend the discussion!
WEEKEND RETREAT FOR WOMEN OF
BLESSED JOHN Come to Lial Renewal Center, Whitehouse for a weekend of relaxation and a deepening of your relationship with God and with women of the parish. Registration forms are at the Welcome Center. The fee is $130. Financial scholarships are available. Contact Sr. Anne Mary.

January 5 2014, because the core team
will be on retreat together. Please pray
for a continued unity among us and a better understanding

be no Teen Fuel group assembling on this day.
