Why is Literacy Important?
Nationally:• Higher expectations for GCSE results.• Two thirds of students with serious
behaviour problems have literacy problems.
• 65% of young people in Young Offenders Institutes have communication difficulties.
• 47% of employers cannot get recruits with the communication skills they need.
• 65% of prisoners have literacy problems.
Why is Literacy Important?
At Bedford Academy:• 68% of our Year 9 students have reading ages
below their chronological (real) age.• 68% of our Year 9 students are working below
the national average level for English.• Literacy levels have a direct impact on
student’s individual attainment at G.C.S.E.
Without Literacy, students are unable to access the curriculum in
ANY subject!
