Welcome to

Page 2: Welcome to Bristol 2015 - a guide to the best student life from Bristol SU

We are a city of hot air balloons, cider, street art and festivals. This is your home for at least the next year, and you’re going to love it.

‘This is the mould that I came from, Bristol University’ – Simon Pegg

Congratulations on making it into one of the most notoriously hard-to-get-in-to Universities in the UK! Our advice is: get stuck in. Join the sky diving club, go to that party on a boat with those random people from your course and nominate yourself to be a student representative. While at University you will be presented with more opportunities than you ever have in your life: seize them.

This guide offers you just a taster of some of the things you will be able to get up to while at Bristol, as well as some sage (we think!) advice from people who have been students here. Have a flip through and if there’s anything else we can help you with, drop us a line: [email protected]

We’re looking forward to meeting you.Your Bristol Students’ Union officers x

We will have your back throughout your time at Bristol.

Twice a year, you will elect your own leadership who will then represent you to the University and others. If you have any issues with your course or your halls or even with a dodgy landlord, we can help with that. If you want to set up your own sports club or society, we can help with that as well. We can help you get a job, sort you out with some volunteering or even help you find a house. Hopefully when the time comes you’ll be able to help other students too. Here are some of the things you get as a member of Bristol SU:

• Access to our 260 societies and 60 sports clubs• Use of the newly refurbished Richmond Building,

including its legendary gig venue the Anson Rooms, two theatres, two bars, music rooms, dark room, dance studio, activity spaces and study spaces

• Parties and events throughout the year. Everything from huge club nights to pub quizzes and TED talks

• Representation. Having Bristol SU on your side means that your ideas get taken seriously by the University and others

• Access to your very own lettings agency, advice service and more.

We are a democracyNot only are you well represented, but you choose who represents you. We hold a few different rounds of elections throughout the year, and it is in your best interest to make sure you vote and elect leaders that you can put your faith in.

If you want to be at the heart of the activity, if you want to make things happen and be involved in making fundamental decisions: run to be a rep yourself. Anyone can run, whether you are an undergraduate, a first year, a postgraduate, part time, international or mature student. Stand up, be counted and make sure that you and your fellow students are getting the best out of University life.

If you want to change something, you can:• Submit an idea on our website:

bristolsu.org.uk/make-a-change• Speak to your representative • Propose your idea to Student Council

- if representatives vote to support it, the SU will make it happen

• Bring your proposal to AMM (the Annual Members Meeting) on 18 February, a meeting of the entire student body, where all students will be able to vote on whether or not to implement your idea.

Who to speak to about what Students are elected to look after every part of your University life. You will have reps for your course, your halls, your societies and sports clubs as well as reps making sure that all identities are represented. We’ve got you covered.

This also means that when your time comes and you choose to take on a leadership position yourself, there really is something for everyone. You might see yourself as a sports-person, an academic, a socialite or a politician. Whatever you’re into, there is a role out there that will help you to develop your interests and skills. The next page is a run down of all the different rep roles.

The Bristol SU voice is a powerful one. SU reps work tirelessly with the university to get the best for you, and that’s a conversation that you can and should be part of.

If there’s something that you think could improve your life, or the lives of your fellow students, the solution is very simple: bring your idea to your reps and we’ll do everything we can to make it happen. Want to do more, be at the heart of the action and the forefront of progress at the university? Then run to be a rep yourself.

The Triangle & Park Street The Triangle and Park Street are the two areas that you are probably most likely to spend your time in whilst at uni. A stone’s throw from the University and Students’ Union, it’s busy day and night and is as student friendly as you can get. Here you’ll find pubs, bars, clubs and coffee shops as well as some really cool boutique shops. For those of you who fancy some late night al-fresco dining, there’s a wide selection of kebab shops too!

Highlights Eating: Roccotillos American Diner serves some of the best milkshakes around, the food is tasty as well.

Drinking: All-in-One. It’s joyfully tacky, it’s cheap and it’s open til 4am. They serve food too.

Shopping: BS8 Fashion Emporium. It’s packed with different independent brands for men and women, as well as a great collection of unisex clothes. It’s fairly affordable too.

Whiteladies Road/Cotham Hill Most students live either round here or round the Gloucester Road area when they move in to student houses. Stoke Bishop is just up the road as well, making this one of the main student thoroughfares in Bristol. Fairly swanky, but still student friendly. There are loads of nice cafés and restaurants, and the charity shops are some of the best in the city. Lively bars mean this is a great place to go out - but mostly populated by locals on Saturday nights.

Highlights Eating: Fishminister. Probably the best fish and chip shop in Bristol.

Drinking: Highbury Vaults. A little out of this area, but deserves a mention as it’s one of the best pubs in town!

Shopping: Sainsburys. This will probably be the biggest, closest supermarket to where you live.

Gloucester Road/Stokes Croft Lined with independent shops and funky bars and pubs, Gloucester Road and Stokes Croft are fantastic places for students. Come here for a wide variety of food shops, vintage clothing stores, and trendy coffee shops. It’s not as upmarket as Clifton or Whiteladies Road, but probably more exciting! In Stokes Croft you’ll find legendary clubs like Blue Mountain and Lakota.

HighlightsEating: The Canteen lives in Hamilton House, a community run building full of artists and performers. The Canteen serves some of the most delicious, yet cheapest food in the city.

Drinking: Blue lagoon. Live music, continental atmosphere and cheap drinks. What more could you ask for?

Shopping: The Amnesty Bookshop. A vast library of second-hand books on every topic imaginable.

City Centre Bristol city centre is an eclectic mix. You’ll find chain bars next to arthouse cinemas and fancy restaurants, while the main shopping precinct has everything from Wilkinson’s to Harvey Nick’s. The best thing about the city centre though is the Waterfront and Welsh back, where you’ll find a variety of bars, restaurants and clubs. Head through the older part of town and you’ll find gems such as St Nick’s market and its farmers market.

HighlightsDrinking: Thekla. One of the best and most legendary clubs in the city. It’s on a boat!

Shopping: Cabot Circus, the shiny, award winning shopping centre

Culture: Arnolifini. This gallery has loads of amazing exhibits and performances. The bar and restaurant is great too.

Clifton Village Clifton is home to us, Bristol SU, and with its vast Georgian terraces, pretty squares and impressive architecture, it is without doubt the most upmarket part of Bristol. Despite this it’s full of students, being so close to the University. The area is full of posh restaurants, swanky boutiques and smart pubs. It’s all gorgeous, but watch out for the astronomical prices! Definitely the place to take visiting parents

Don’t forget: The SU building, complete with the cheapest bar in Bristol, is in Clifton, only 5 minutes from the Triangle.

Highlights Eating: The Primrose Café. Boho café by day, smart bistro by night. Proudlock from Made in Chelsea was once spotted there.

Drinking: The Coronation Tap. Home of the student favourite: Exhibition Cider.

Shopping: The Clifton Arcade. Crammed with independent clothes and record shops.

Guide to secret BristolArtsBristol Old Vic is the oldest theatre in the country. Its location on King Street has got so much history that you can practically see the pirates. The Llandoger Trow pub, just down the road, is said to have inspired Treasure Island.

For a night of theatre on a more student-friendly budget, try The Wardrobe: a black box theatre above The White Bear pub on St.Michael’s Hill. The Wardrobe hosts some of the best, quirkiest, small scale nights of theatre and comedy in the city.

The Arnolfini is one of Europe’s leading centres for contemporary arts. It boasts heaps of innovative experimental work: gallery exhibitions, live-art, music and film.

FashionThe charity shops on Cotham Hill boast huge collections of clothes. They have mountains of cheap vintage clothing as well as some more expensive designer items.

There are a number of great streetwear shops in Bristol. One of the most

conveniently located for students is Cooshti on Park Street, which has great student discounts and really friendly staff.

If you’re after something a bit more high street, then Cabot Circus is not to be missed. The award winning shopping centre boast hundreds of shops as well as being a lovely light and airy building.

FilmThe Watershed is one of the foremost arthouse cinemas in the country. As well as showing some of the most interesting contemporary film around, they also show old classics and host film festivals and talks. Tickets are £4.50 for under 25s!

Showcase cinema in Cabot Circus is the swankiest mainstream cinema in the city. If you sign up for free membership you can get £6.25 tickets on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The Orpheus Cinema, up near Stoke Bishop is a tiny cinema. That means that they don’t always show every big film that comes out, but tickets are absurdly cheap and the building has the homely feel of an old school family run business.

SportBristol SU is home to over 70 sports groups, so we should definitely be your first port of call. Play your sport of choice competitively at national level, or just for fun. We also run initiatives such as Get Active and Fit & Fab, which run cheap and free fitness sessions.

Kayaking along the river is one of our favourite sporting activities. You can see some of the most interesting sights in Bristol from the river, including the SS Great Britain. As you get further out of the city centre, the river starts to run through countryside and you can stop off at a number of riverside pubs.

The Bristol SU

With so much on offer, there’s no doubt you’ll soon discover your own favourite haunts. Until you do though, here are a few of ours:

Bristol is a cycling city. A favourite of ours is the Bristol to Bath route. Bath is a lovely place to get a drink or two, and if you don’t feel like cycling back afterwards you can always get the train. If you don’t have your own bike, you can hire one of our Balloon Bikes for only £50 a year.

DO keep your door open while you are unpacking and say hi to people as they go past. Everyone is in the same boat and happy to see a friendly face!

DO go to meals if you are in catered halls, or suggest cooking with your housemates if you are in self-catered accommodation. Food paves the way to solid friendships and dinner times are some of the best places to meet and bond with people.

DO embrace supermarket own brands and independent grocers. Living on the cheap is one of the most defining parts of student life, but it’s not all bad. In fact, a lot of students pride themselves on being the person in their group who can eat the best for the least money.

DON’T get into the habit of missing lectures. Yes, this sounds boring, but this is such a hard habit to break, and if you’re still missing lectures further down the line, it can have a serious impact on your degree.

DON’T just hang out with the first people you meet. There are so many people to meet at Bristol - there’s no knowing who your best friends might be by the end of your time here.

DON’T miss Welcome Fair. Your main aim is to sign up for societies and sports clubs (definitely the best way to meet people) but it’s also worth coming for the number of freebies you’ll get!

Put the date of the Welcome Fair in your diary. This is the biggest and busiest event in the Welcome Week calendar, where you can experience everything Bristol SU has to offer. 25 September - Bristol Harbourside.

Your accommodationIf you are in university accommodation, your Halls committee (JCR) will be the first people who look after you , so it’s good to know who they are! Most will be working with the union to organise your social calendar throughout welcome week, and will be on hand to help you out if you need anything.

Once welcome week is over, most JCRs will step down. That’s where you come in: in the second week of term you will elect your JCR for the coming year. In fact, why not step up and run to be on the JCR yourself?

You will be able to nominate yourself at bristolsu.org.uk/elections. If you’re unsure about anything, have a chat with your current JCR or Student Support Administrator.

What current committee members say:The role has allowed me to develop a range of skills such as: teamwork, leadership and time management. Throughout the year, I am constantly meeting and working with new people which has allowed me to establish a fantastic network.

The experience I have gained by being in the JCR this year has also been of interest to employers when applying for internships. Employers recognise the dedication, commitment and attitude of those who take up a role in their JCR. Wesley Williams

After Welcome Week I stood for election as the JCR representative for my hall, on a committee for a group of City Centre halls. At the time, I knew little about what this would entail but it became one of the best decisions I made in my first year! As a member of a JCR committee, you hold responsibility for a budget that everyone in your halls has paid money into – a big responsibility!Blaine Lambon
