A bustling river town was the dream ofDan Beckwith when he first came toVermilion County. Beckwith donated twentyacres of the first eighty and platted the towninto lots north and south of Main Street, andeast and west of Vermilion.
Amidst the chants of auctioneer HarveyLuddington, on a warm morning on April 10,1827, the town of Danville was born. Thenew county seat was established, and braveentrepreneurs attend the sale and settlementof the first forty-two lots.
Coal mining, railroading, andmanufacturing, Danville has had them all.Today, nestled within an area of naturalbeauty and abundant resources, Danville stillhas a lot to offer those who follow in thepaths of the first settlers.
Vermilion County was established January18, 1826 and comprises 898 square miles.Danville is the county seat. VermilionCounty is served by a number of commercialrail routes, as well as Interstate 74 and theVermilion County Airport.
