What is art?

Page 3: Welcome to DRAWING & PAINTING! Ms. Sanders asanders@fjuhsd.net Periods 1-2 at Sunny Hills Periods 4-6 at La Habra

What is art?

Is it…

• Something that is pretty to look at?• Something that is hard to make?• Something that makes you feel a certain way?

Page 4: Welcome to DRAWING & PAINTING! Ms. Sanders asanders@fjuhsd.net Periods 1-2 at Sunny Hills Periods 4-6 at La Habra

What is art?• How can we make value judgments about what is good or bad art?

• How can we make our own art better?

• Which is more important, the way something looks, or the idea behind it?

Classroom Routines• Students must ask permission to use the restroom, or to leave class for any other reason.

• A student who is tardy should notify the teacher that they have arrived, in case the teacher has already marked them absent.

• After an absence (whether excused or unexcused), it is the student’s responsibility to check with the teacher for any missed assignments.

• Late work will be docked 5% for each day it is late. Late work will not be accepted after one week has passed. If, due to outside circumstances, a student is unable to finish a project on time, the student must notify the teacher of the special circumstances in advance of the due date.

Classroom Routines• Students will be given opportunities to receive extra credit. Extra credit can be earned by going above and beyond expectations on a given assignment, or by visiting an art-related place or event (such as a museum or gallery show) and writing a one-page essay about the experience.

• Cell phones must be kept put away at all times. Upon first offense, the cell phone will be confiscated for the class period. Upon subsequent offenses, the cell phone will be confiscated for the remainder of the school day.

• MP3 players (such as iPods) are allowed during individual work time, but not during instruction.

• Students will work until the five-minute bell rings, at which time they may begin cleaning up. Once their area is clean, students should wait at their table for the class-end bell to ring.

• Students are expected to have materials in class every day, and keep materials in good condition.

• NO food, drink, or visitors allowed in class.
