Welcome to Ferny Hills & Districts Swimming Club Incorporated
Season 2014/2015 is here and it looks like it’s going to be an exciting one. We hope as a Club we
can continue to provide opportunities for generations of children to develop their proficiency in
and enjoyment of the sport of swimming.
We extend a special welcome to all our new members and their families and look forward to
working with you for the enjoyment of all the children. To our returning members we say welcome
back for another fun-filled season.
The Committee would like to remind all swimmers, parents, coaches and supporters that it is
important for all to follow the “Code of Conduct”. Please take time to read and familiarise yourself
with it prior to the start of the season.
The aims of the club are to:
• encourage water confidence and fitness
• encourage self-improvement
• promote good sportsmanship
In addition to our Friday night club swims your family has the opportunity, and is actively
encouraged to participate in the BSA, SQ and local meets which encourage a “team spirit” within
our club environment.
We trust that your family will enjoy the activities offered throughout the 2014/2015 season.
The club would like to thank

members of the Ferny Hills & Districts Swimming Club- exception to club nights by discretion of
Club Night Coordinator ( a trial club night is available with prior notice to club/club night
coordinator )
PARENTAL SUPERVISION
As your children’s safety is of paramount importance, parents of children involved in any activity
conducted by the club MUST either be present throughout the entire activity or arrange for
another adult to accept that responsibility. An adult must supervise swimmers under the age of
16 years. Should clarification be required regarding this requirement please contact a member of
the Management Committee.
GENERAL MEETINGS
The Ferny Hills & Districts Swimming Club Incorporated conducts general meetings on a monthly
basis. Your attendance at these meetings will greatly assist the administration of the club. The
4
venue for these meetings will be the Club Room at the Ferny Hills Pool. Time and Date of meetings
are to be confirmed and will be emailed out when finalised.
ELECTION OF CLUB OFFICALS
The positions held by all club officials are declared vacant for the 2015-2016 Season at the AGM of
the Ferny Hills & Districts Swimming Club Incorporated.
However, to ensure successful planning it is preferred to have what is termed a “rolling”
committee structure. This means that only some, never all, committee members stand down at
once. Resignations from current committee members and new nominations are called for and
have to be made in writing to the Secretary prior the AGM of the Ferny Hills & Districts Swimming
Club Incorporated. The date for the AGM (July/August 2015) will be advised closer to the time. We
would ask all parents to attend this meeting.
RESOLUTION
The committee encourages a certain amount of informality in relation to its business and its
communication with the Club Members; however serious complaints about club organisation
should be made in writing to the President for resolution at the next committee meeting. Club
Members are welcome to attend and we encourage members to attend committee meetings.
MEDIA
Any media communication is to be referred to the Management Committee. Any media articles
regarding the club or its members must be approved by the President and Management
Committee before it is submitted to the media.

CLUB NIGHT PROCEDURE
Your club is organised by the parents and past swimmers. Each club night we require a number of
volunteers to assist in various areas including timekeeping. We encourage parents to participate
in these functions allowing your children to reap maximum benefits from the club.
Although no previous experience is necessary, the club will provide adequate training. This
involvement provides an ideal opportunity to meet other parents in the club.
For all 50m and 100m events automatic nominations apply to all registered club swimmers. 200m
events must be nominated for by the swimmer (if eligible) and do not accrue points towards the
end of year points trophy. If swimmers are unable to attend Club Night it is their responsibility to
inform the Club Night Coordinator by Thursday night prior to Club Night and no later than
7.00pm. Further information is covered in the nomination email sent out prior to each Club Night.
Parents are responsible for their children’s nominations in each event.
No late nominations will be accepted.
5.30pm – 6.30pm Barbeque and Sausage Sizzle (as per parent roster)
6.30pm - 6.35pm Announcements
6.45pm Swimming Starts
Help by parents is essential for the smooth running of club nights.
SPECIAL POINTS
♦ Children will not be allowed to swim on a club night unless they are accompanied by an adult
who has accepted responsibility for their conduct and safety for the entire evening. An adult
must supervise swimmers under the age of 16 years.
♦ Swimmers new to the Club, who have met the Club’s distant qualifying times, can choose to
start in either the 25m or 50m races (Proof to Club Night Coordinator is required).
15
RACE PROCEDURE AND RULES
♦ MARSHALLING
Swimmers are to proceed to the designated marshalling areas when called and remain quiet.
The Marshall will call the swimmers name, race number and lane number, once only. The
Marshall will then direct swimmers to the grassed areas behind their designated starting
blocks, in their race number order. Misbehaviour and unnecessary noise in these areas is to be
avoided.
♦ STARTING
The Check Starter will call the swimmers name and designated race before each race. If you are
in the wrong lane or your name is not called, put up your hand to attract the Starters attention.
Once their race is called swimmers should step onto the first step of the block. When the
Referee blows his whistle the swimmers should step up onto the top of the block.
THERE MUST BE ABSOLUTE SILENCE AND NO MOVEMENT NEAR THE BLOCKS ONCE THE
REFEREES WHISTLE IS BLOWN.
The Starter will call the race distance and stroke followed by “TAKE YOUR MARKS”. All
swimmers will then move to the front of the block and take up their starting position. Once all
swimmers are still, the starting gun will sound to start the race.
For BACKSTROKE, ALL SWIMMERS must enter the pool feet first, and turn directly to the block
and take up their starting position.
THE ONE (1) START RULE APPLIES.
♦ FINISHING AND TURNING
to finish correctly in BREASTSTROKE & BUTTERFLY events both hands must contact the
wall/rope at the same time. In FREESTYLE & BACKSTROKE events, touching with one hand is
sufficient.
If you are unsure of correct procedure for a turn or touch, consult you Coach.
♦ EXITING OF POOL
Except for relays other than the final leg, swimmers shall not leave their lane or exit the pool
until the Referee’s whistle has sounded after the finish of the race. Swimmers must only exit
the pool via the side steps. Lanes 1-4 exit via the steps at Lane 1, Lanes 5-8 exit via the steps at
Lane 8. During relay swims, swimmers 1-3 may exit over their lane. Non-compliance with these
rules can result in DISQUALIFICATION.
THE REFEREE’S DECISION IS FINAL.
12.5m and 25m swimmers will not be disqualified for technical stroke infringements on a Club
Night, but will be spoken to about the problem by the Referee or Coach. All other swimmers
can be disqualified by the Referee for infringements of the Rules of Swimming.
♦ Club Night and Club Championships decisions can and may be altered if need be at the
discretion of our Coordinator and in consultation with President
16
CLUB NIGHT PROGRAM
Club Night events will be as per the Club Calendar on page 11. There will be a 12.5m (if applicable),
25m and 50m event for each stroke each club night. The order of swims will be dependent on the
distance events.
There will also be a 100m swim in a particular stroke each Club Night as well as a 200m swim.
You must nominate for the 200m event via email prior to Thursday 7.00pm to the Club Night
Coordinator.
To swim a 200m event, a swimmer must have at least qualified to swim in the 100m event in that
stroke.
SICKNESS POLICY
Swimmer and Parent/Guardian must approach the Club Night Coordinator, and then advise the
Marshalls, should the swimmer become sick or injured on the night. Once this has been noted, the
swimmer will be unable to compete for the remainder of the night.
AUTOMATIC NOMINATIONS
♦ All swimmers are automatically nominated for all strokes they are eligible to swim on Friday
night.
♦ If a swimmer is unable to attend it is their responsibility to contact the Club Night Coordinator.
♦ The closing time for withdrawal of nominations will be Thursday at 7.00pm.
♦ Swimmers who do not advise of their withdrawal prior to Thursday at 7.00pm and do not
swim in an event on the Friday will automatically have points deducted.
♦ If a swimmer nominates in a stroke and elects not to swim in that stroke without consulting
the Club Night Coordinator, one penalty point will be deducted from his/her accumulated
total for that stroke.
♦ Results will be emailed out to all club members.
♦ Only Ferny Swimming Club financial members who have competed in at least five (5) Club
Nights will be eligible to swim in the Club Championships.
17
GRADING OF SWIMMERS
Club events are based on a system of graded scratch races (swimming against those with similar
times irrespective of age). Points are allocated on basis of comparison with the swimmer’s own
best time.
Current members’ best time will be calculated from the previous season.
When a faster than best time is recorded, this time becomes the new best time.
Swimmers will automatically grade to the new distance on achieving the qualifying time on one
swim. This applies to all strokes including medley. Once a swimmer has qualified to swim a longer
distance they must continue to swim this distance.

MESSAGE FROM THE COACH
'It is that time of year again...' With the beginning of the 2014/2015 season it is time for some
more early morning starts and some long weekends out at Chandler. It is great to see the number
of returning Families after the huge success the club had last year. It is also great to see a number
of new families joining the club for this new season, I am confident in saying that we can offer a fun
and inviting environment for everyone.
This season we saw Ferny Hills being able to keep its position in Premier Division. As the Head
Coach it is still my priority to welcome all levels of swimmers into our club and to help make them
feel part of the overall team. Individual success will be praised evenly regardless of whether you
are a first time competitor or an Olympic champion. No accomplishment will be considered any
less important than another.
Ferny Hills Swimming Club prides itself on providing a fun team environment and it will strive to
offer this to each and every member again this year. By doing this, there is no doubt in my mind
that we will, can experience the same successes as last season.
To all the swimmers - enjoy all your racing and all your team and individual victories this season
To all the parents - enjoy all your sleep ins now because we are just getting started again.
Good Luck
Sean Williams
