TRANSPORTATION
Planning Your Trip to the Airport
Graduate Iowa City is located about a 25-minute drive (14 miles) from the Cedar Rapids Airport. If you don’t have access to a car, local app-based ride-sharing and taxi services are available. Please contact the Front Desk for assistance in arranging taxi or limo services to the airport.
Emergencies
In the event of an emergency, you can receive help from hotel personnel by dialing “0”. For first responder assistance, please dial 911.
Evacuation Procedures
The following are procedures to be adhered to when a fire alarm is activated and it is necessary to evacuate:
If a hotel fire alarm sounds, do not panic. Carefully, follow the procedures outlined below and review the diagram on the back of your entry door.
SAFETY & SECURITY
12 13
In the event you discover or suspect a fire:
• Activate the nearest pull station. These are located adjacent to all stairwells. Call the emergency number (“0”) located on your phone and report the location of the smoke or fire. Proceed to evacuate the area by following the escape procedures.
• Always familiarize yourself with the location of the nearest fire exit stairs after check-in.
• Collect your room key, as re-entry may be necessary.
• Feel the entrance door to your room with the back of your hand. If it is warm or hot, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR. Use the passive escape technique outlined below.
If there is a little smoke and no fire visible, take a towel and wet it. Take the towel and place it over your mouth and nose and exit the room, closing the door behind you. Move quickly to the nearest emergency exit.
NEVER ATTEMPT TO USE ELEVATORS IN A FIRE EMERGENCY.
Once in the stairwell, walk down holding onto the handrail for support. If you encounter heavier smoke, DO NOT WALK THROUGH IT. Walk upstairs until you see a smoke-free corridor. Find an alternate emergency exit from the corridor and commence walking downstairs. If you encounter smoke in a corridor, stoop or crawl to the exit – it is cooler and there is less smoke at the floor level.
Proceed to the ped-mall behind the hotel or wherever instructed to assemble.
Remaining in Your Room
If there is a fire and you cannot leave your room, either because you see smoke leaking into your room from the corridor or if the front door is hot to the touch, stay in room and please follow the below procedures:• Dial 0 or 911 on your phone and alert authorities of
your location • Turn off heat or air conditioning• Fill the bathtub with water• Plug vents and doorjamb with wet sheets and towels• Hang a sheet out the window and shut the window• Hold a damp towel over your nose and mouth• Stay low and wait for help
