How do I find the resources I need? You can access the online College Library catalogue using the computers in the Library or any other computer by visiting: http://lib.harlaxton.ac.uk.

When you have found a suitable item make a note of the shelf location, for example 109 ROU. This is the Dewey number for where the book is shelved and first three letters from the author’s surname. (See Library Plan on p. 3).

Welcome to the Harlaxton College Library! The Harlaxton College Library collections are for the use of all members of the College community and are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Library occupies three rooms in the North Wing of the Manor which originally housed the Manor kitchens.

In this booklet you will find details about the range of resources in the Library and facilities which you can make use of during your stay so that your time at Harlaxton is as productive as possible.

You can access the Library catalogue online at http://lib.harlaxton.ac.uk, however staff are available, at the times shown overleaf, if you need help or advice, or if you are having difficulty in finding the information you need.

A Library of this size can function efficiently only if all users co-operate. Rules are few – please observe them, as they are for the benefit of everyone. Specific information is given in this booklet, but we urge you to consult with us if any points need clarification or if we can be of help in any way.

We aim to constantly improve the resources and services offered and welcome your suggestions and comments, even if it is just recommending a good book.

This is your Library - please make good use of it.

Please return all resources to the Issue Desk and ensure that the loan is cancelled. Do not pass items on to friends – the loan will remain your responsibility.

Losses/Damages

Lost or damaged books should be reported to the Library staff immediately. A charge may be made for replacement.

Borrowing/Returning items when the desk is not staffed

The Library operates 24/7 on an a basis of honesty and trust. Please sign out items using the yellow sheet provided on the Issue Desk if the Library is not staffed. There is a separate pink sheet to sign books back in. Please leave books to be returned on the Issue Desk to be re-shelved by staff.

Faculty frequently place on Reserve any items which are likely to be in heavy demand. Please ask at the Issue Desk for access to these books, which are to be used only in the Library.

Can I get assistance with accessing the resources? We are happy to assist all users to access our collections and facilities. Please alert the staff if you have difficulty in using stairs, reaching high or low shelves, carrying items or operating equipment. You are welcome to discuss with us any measures which would enable you to use our resources effectively and in comfort.

Does the Library have any rules? It is expected that all Library users will conduct themselves in a quiet and orderly fashion, and maintain in the Library an atmosphere conducive to study.

With the exception of bottled, non-spill, water we request no food and drink in the Library. This will minimise the risk of damage to books and other items of stock.

Please do not replace on the shelves any books you have been consulting. Leave them neatly on the tables for the staff to re-shelve.

What facilities does the Library offer?

Where can I study? The Library has around 40 study spaces, in addition classroom areas are normally

available for group study after 5.00pm and at weekends.

Are there any computers in the Library? A limited number of workstations with Internet access for academic research, together with

Can I bring my laptop into the Library? You are welcome to bring laptops and other devices into the Library to take full advantage

of the campus-wide wireless facility, but please take care not to create a tripping hazard with cables should you need to access a power point.

including a Shakespeare Collection. We encourage use of College Library holdings of DVDs and recorded music, for class presentations and for your own enjoyment.

We reserve the right to recall items needed for use on Reserve or by another user – please return these books immediately.

Overdues

Fines should have no place in a small College Library. Help us to avoid them by returning all books within the loan period or renewing the loan.

Returning items

Are there any items that I cannot borrow?Reference books are to be used only in the Library area and the adjacent study areas. Most

reference books are located in the Reception area of the Library, and are clearly marked.

Reserve items

Leave them neatly on the tables for the staff to re-shelve.

of the campus-wide wireless facility, but please take care not to create a tripping hazard with cables should you need to access a power point.

including a Shakespeare Collection. We encourage use of College Library holdings of DVDs and recorded music, for class presentations and for your own enjoyment.
